It's about time, I think people just keep doing this type of stupid shit, then wanna post it for attention .ban them period unless asked permission and then limited to only tutorials or something maybe.
My gym now revokes membership to anyone filming and has encouraged members who disagree to find another gym. It’s made a huge difference in the demographics.
Especially if they’re making $10,000 plus a month… go by your ass a set of weights for your home. I love how these people act like they are Ballers and they have such a massive following. Don’t have enough money to buy some equipment for the house.
I partly agree with this, but people like MaxTaylorLifts and some other youtubers have really helped influence me and taught me a lot about lifting so it’s hard to just get rid of all filming
@@rydermorin935 My issue is these folks who publish videos shaming or fake shaming others. Maybe the gyms should more tightly control who and how people can video.
I ain’t a gym bro, but man, these videos resonate on such a larger, cultural scale. When did we all turn into such a seemingly entitled, ‘let’s publicly humiliate one another’ culture? Joey Swoll, keep doing what you’re doing, brother- helping us remind ourselves one video at a time to act like a damn adult and ‘mind ya business’!!
@@MsWhatdoyaknow Are you serious??? If you are. Here is the answer. These people that Joey is responding to are putting other people on blast for no reason. They have to be made aware that their behavior is not acceptable. In this case, "the punishment fitting the crime" is to do the same to them and call them out for their bad behavior. If you are not serious... good troll... Have a good one.
I get what you’re saying but there’s a big difference between “supporting someone publicly humiliating another person” (whom is publicly humiliating someone else) and standing up to narcissistic bullies filming others w/o consent for the sole purpose of affecting those others’ livelihoods all for the sake of social media clout. Joey Swoll stands up to these brats in a succinctly logical manner, explaining really well why this behavior is childish at best, potentially damaging at worse.
@Re Lax Sometimes they do, their cowards yes, but also narcissists so often lack the judgement/experince to realise when an interaction is about to take a steep downhill turn because they aren't watching the person for feedback and ignore the clear body language ques because to them they are not important.
I'm that wrong person. I would have made eye contact with him as I set my bag down and load the machine up and start using it. And he wouldn't have done a damn thing.
Or gym bags, towels, water bottles etc…. They are all used to “save” a piece of equipment for the next set. People suck and gym people are no different.
@@tallrobshortpants7190 You just reminded me of all of the jerks that put their stuff on the front row pool chairs (at resorts, etc) early in the morning and don't show up to the pool until noon or so. That really grinds my gears. No consideration for other people.
Honestly, I'm glad I work out at a YMCA that is mostly older people. They don't give a crap about social media clout, and I have never seen a single tripod in my entire time working out there.
I worked out at a y like that(I'm in my 40s(cringe)) and got targeted by the Karen that also infested the y and worse had the eastern Ontario ceo wrapped around her finger.
years back, I was in a gym as an entitled woman walked over to the squat rack immediately picked up and held onto the common use weight belt until she used it. I became aware and snatched it back. She complained until I went to the video showing it was not used over 30 mins (hogging equip). She was told to share as it didn't sit well, beginning her "I went to college and my job pays me X". I shut her up with my higher degrees and retirement, then a lecture on the gym revealing character instead of building it.
@@gothica3605 I was at a few gyms with general use equipment; mostly belts. Some of the knuckleheads walked in a confiscated the weight belts until they got around to it. That got shut down in a matter of minutes. The suspect members were spoken to, got bent out of shape and membership revoked. The gym is NOT a HS campus.
He was acting like he told the guy off all badass, when in reality he just lied to avoid further confrontation. You see insecure people do this all the time. They immediately start crafting a better narrative for themself, to themself.
This is why I set up a gym in my garage, so I can workout with no one around. I hate that things are becoming so individualized but there is a rampant problem with entitlement and narcissism. I avoid public places because I feel like I could snap at one of these people and end up in jail.
It sucks you even have to do that. I took a long time off and then came back when Jim started opening 2021 and I couldn't believe how strange things have gotten. Everyone filming themselves, dudes with their shirts off filming videos, girls wearing pants that show their actual burr crack in full detail
@@user-nj1zu2nf1x if they're even wearing pants at all ... right now i'm seeing alot of short booty shorts that barely cover anything, it's all very skintight material, in neutral colors so it showspretty much everything, even their wet cameltoe ... I don't want to see that, i want to fucking workout in peace and go home.
I stay out of public for the public's protection and so my wife and daughters don't have to visit me in prison and/or so I don't end up on death row. I'm homicidally opposed to how 'murikans comport themselves in public these days. And while I'm quite capably violent, I would rather not be in a situation where I would gleefully unleash that monster from its cage. I don't really want to hurt people, until I witness their behavior, so it is just safer for me to stick with folks and an environment absent drama.
@@user-nj1zu2nf1x yeah true , happens anywhere in public spaces, I go to use car wash , and someone says how long you gonna be , I go to pump up tyres you get people seemingly impatient waiting , I now bought my own jet wash and battery air pump , such a pain. In the gym 2 blokes almost came to blows because one guy would not let another guy get to his locker until he had finished on that spot dressing up !
the kids are learning to create more problems than cameras resolve. I was in Germany for 3 years as a kid and NEVER saw a more polite environment. It also forced me to better learn my manners in return. Life was grand for a while until I returned to America and noticed it missing.
KICK THEM OUT. It's not about just the gym. The societies should stop putting up with psychopaths and narcissists. Not necessarily hurt them back but try to explain but if even then they refuse to follow the rules, then some measures should be taken.
I don't have any gym equipment but I managed to get pretty shredded by just using obstacles around my house and unfinished basement where I can hang from the door headers.
I’m pretty sure he would have had a different response if you were the one asking. Those types always ensure the other is weaker prior to strutting. I learned three things about life in the Marines. Be trustworthy Be a good dude And don’t be a b&@)tch That clown broke all 3 pillars!
You forgot the rule about picking up the soap in the shower. Dude if people cant wait a few minutes for someone to finish their routine then they need to learn patience. I do the same with a towel and water bottle, just set it on the next equipment before use, otherwise you get some neebie taking up machines for ages playing on their phone or just resting. Wheres the video about those people.
@@BigDees19 really, is it ok someone to hog a machine but not be even using it? Can i act tough and just kick them off? If not then ill stick to ‘reserving’ it.
Thank you! This has happened to me in YOGA class, people coming in, taking pictures of themselves, filming the whole class? WTH? Can’t people just work out anymore?
Yeah there was no shot that this dude was going to do anything if that guy called him out on his bullshit. He talked shit ONLY after he walked away. This kid is probably all bark and no bite.
Remember that every public video online is 100% by people that record themselves in public. I don't record myself in public at all, and most people I know don't either. Photos and videos are reserved for special events A fair amount of people nowadays still want privacy. I bet you to as well.
I am a good friend of my gym owner. I don't even get upset when this happens. I just walk over to him and tell him what is going on and he goes and tears them a new one. If they give him any back talk he bans them from the gym and kicks them out without a second thought. He values long term members like myself over any of these ignorant people.
@@kevinjones5715 Yes I am actually. I LOVE bullying progressive little liberal clowns like yourself whose ignorant selfish behavior impacts people in the gym who actually want to work out and accomplish something other than taking up space, being a nuisance and wasting peoples time. I get special treatment due to the fact that people actually like me. I have a great personality and don't spend my entire existence whining like a little toddler about every perceived injustice in the world.
@Your NameI undestand EXACTLY what he means. He throws his weight around with his inside connections when HE doesn't like other people's behaviour. HE is a bully, and probably someone who claims to hate the police, or any other authority, but he's perfectly fine using it for his own benefit.
Yes, I've seen people on a machine not really working out, but sitting there on the cellphone texting or doing whatever. If you ask them if you use the machine, they give you an attitude.
I don't give people attitude when they ask to use a machine I usually hurry up, wipe up and get off. But, I am guilty of checking my phone in-between sets.
Genuine question: is it bad to check your phone between sets? I’m pretty new to the gym. I usually need like a minute between sets where I drink some water and look at my phone before I feel ready to go again but do people find this rude? I’m worried I haven’t clued in to all the smaller etiquette rules.
I’m jealous! But only a few film at my gym and they do it in an inconspicuous way. The girls who stand at the dumbbell racks taking ass selfies for ten minutes bug me way more
I've been lifting weights/exercising at my home for the last 10 years and sometimes think I'm "missing out" on the social aspect of casually knowing folks at the gym as I used to. If this is the new "normal", which is seems like it is, I guess I'm really not missing out on anything.
Usually every gym I went to had a few d-bags....and they can be pretty sickening. Once a guy and his girlfriend were using 5 machines at once, doing some circuit thing or something. I asked to use one of the machines and the girl said "I'll ask my boyfriend to give you permission." Then I put my hands out like "What the" and the dude called me a punk. I told the front desk and he went over and said they can't use more than one machine if people were waiting and the two got rude with him too...until he said "ok I'll just cancel your memberships" then they froze a little.....then went to one machine. That isn't even the worst I've experienced.
Gyms memberships have a reputation of being difficult to cancel. There's even a Friends episode involving this. I wonder if people are acting like dbags to get their memberships canceled easily. 😆
@@stephenshelton4267 I don't know why they would be difficult to cancel, I've canceled 2 or 3 when I moved quite easily. Also, a gym can cancel someone's membership rather easily for bad behavior, which I've seen a few times.
Absolutely 👍🏾 The gym management needs to step in with situations like this. Nobody is trying to wait half an hour to use equipment. We’re trying to get in and out because we got other things to do
@@mikearonson1071 this kid goes to the same gym I do so I can vouch that he’s a nobody who spends his whole gym time filming like the rest of the little narcissistic assholes there.
i remember when i first started lifting in a rel gym almost 20 yrs ago the OG's in the gym gave us youngsters the best advance and it was everybody in the gym is strong and lift weights just like you so be respectful.
guys like that get knocked out by nice ppl with tempers. in out out of the gym. guys like that gets punched for a slick mouth then say why you hitting me , please stop. #BULLY
It's seeing this that makes me feel lucky that tripod culture isn't quite a thing here in the Netherlands (not in my local gym at least) Keep doing god's work Mr Swoll, massive respect for being such a positive influence!
I think it should be reverse, those who want to film their workouts should do it at home and people who are sharing public space should be allowed their privacy without worrying about someone’s camera.
He acts tough when they walk away. His gf knew he was wrong. Saying they want problems no dude you want problems for tiktok. Gym culture is getting worse with these tiktokers thinking they pay 2000 for membership when its 9.99
these type of guys like bullying people that look weaker.. but they're eventually gonna do it to the wrong person and that weak looking person actually knows how to square up! lmfao! can't judge a book by its cover.. a guy could be 145 lbs.. and destroy people in fighting.
@@dirkdiggler2379 Gymbros back in the day were harassing me and underestimating a guy, who trained most of the time for max strength. At the end they came with 3 "buff looking" guys at me and still lost and then cried to the police that I was mean to them. They were angry, that my "deadlift noise" was interrupting their business.
Welcome to the world that will never change. Too many people value recording everything, and it is over. Anonymity? Gone. Privacy? Was dead for a while, but it is now buried.
Again totally 100% agree. Thank god for Joey pointing all this shit out. Sad part about it is he shouldn’t have to. But no one has common sense anymore 😕
I stopped going to gyms long before this trend started. The money you spend on memberships can go to a home gym (one or two year’s worth of membership can buy a lot of equipment that will last a lifetime). True, you can’t have every machine at home (unless you’re a zillionaire), but you can get a lot. Plus, you never have to travel to work out, wait for someone else, or put up with rude behavior.
I think it's sad when you see this behavior at gyms. The nerve of both of them to act like that. And the dude there trying to flex in front of his girl. Son that's how you get hurt and your girl taken from you. That's why I go to the gym late or in the morning
This is a major problem in my gym. We have one guy who will put stuff (towels, bottles, phones, notebooks) on as many as three different pieces of equipment so others cannot or will not use them. All for his own convenience. He puts stuff on machines and then goes and uses other machines. And then he goes off on people who attempt use one of the machines he isn't using, (but still has stuff on). Worst of all the management won't kick him out of the gym. And almost as bad other people have begun to do the same kind of thing.
I miss the days when you knew all the guys down in the free weights room(aka the pit) at my old gym. If you even looked at a spot with someone there they offered to work in with you. I am so glad I don’t work out with DB’s like I see in these videos!
While I LOVE my home gym and would never go back to a public gym, the one thing I do miss is that camaraderie between the regulars that, like you say, invite you to work in without being asked, offer a spot when the weights are getting heavy, offer tips and shout encouragement.
@@FreeSeoul yeah I'm in New zealand and none of that weird shit ever happened here when I was in public gyms. Haven't stepped foot in one for nearly 3 years now though so it could have changed since.
Im in the US and use a public gym. The one I go to is not all that bad, I am able to get my workout in and head out within a set time frame. I am not one for socializing either so I dont pay attention to that aspect. But people for the most part are courteous.
Whenever someone is using 2 machines at the gym and I need one I’ll just jump on the one that’s not being used and tell them “1 machine at a time, I’m not here to cater to you”
Usually, it’s a formal gym rule (and posted...) to allow others to work in with you, so if thats true at your gym and you’re uncomfortable with pointing this out directly, then go to gym mgmt. a good gym manager will handle it.
Hahaha this is why you don’t ask, you just go use it… and then when they say “I was using that”… you say “oh…well that can’t be possible because I’m using it”…
Youre a good man for calling this stuff out. When I attempted to go to the gym dofferent places different times in my life, i felt judged insecure nobody was really helpful and it just made say eff it. Gyms have had a bizarre mentality and now women doing what they do to men is dispicable because as a woman i just wanted to work out. Granted i dont video myself but that just makes it more difficult. But anyways - kudos to you! And thanks for opening people's eyes!!
I was in the gym yesterday there was a phone on a machine, I picked it up thinking some one had left it there so I was looking for the cleaner to give it to her. A man walked to me saying it was his that he was going between that machine and another, he then took the phone off me and said work in with me. It’s that simple and that easy. He was extremely kind and he wasn’t bothered at all by it, in fact he walked up to me saying thanks for the workout, smiled and walked away. He was an older man maybe that’s what it was (I don’t know) ,some young people now are so focused on social media they’ve left the art of respect and decency behind them and it’s a shame because we are all there in a gym for the same goal,,,to better ourselves so these two have clearly missed the train on that one
I had a guy do something like that to me, he was using something I wanted to I was polite, so he kept going around using other equipment and doing pushups and other stuff, So I asked him are you done and he got angry and made it out like I was unreasonable, if your going around using other equpment doing pushups almost halfway across the gym its confusing
Yes it is. This has a name called "super setting" and many gyms have policies discouraging/against it. Tbh, if someone leaves a machine, it's up for grabs unless they are polite.
I've done the same, supersetted on 3 different things, as I've come back to the first piece of equipment, someone was standing next to it and saw me coming, said oh sorry were you using this, I said yes but I'm doing supersets so feel free to hop on while I'm using the other things. It's that easy to not be an asshole.
Crazy how common decency has gone out the window. Whenever I superset machines (which I rarely do) I make sure if anyone asks to use, I alternate with them in a very accommodating manner. Cause I would hate to be on the receiving end if someone hogged it indefinitely. As humans we love to inconvenience other people but hate to be on the receiving end. Can’t say we progressed much as humans if we still think that way.
Id prefer the mma fighter thats isnt as big cuz he trains to fight not to lift things. Ppl like this think theyre tough cuz they lift but have 0 fighting skills, knowledge or ability
@@sliderx1897 I used to Kick-Box (Muay Thai) and was very average at it. I'm 5'3 and around 140 pounds. I've seen huge gym bros come and do thinking they would beat anyone. All it took was a few leg kicks. Yet, there are huge guys who are also trained fighters. Just never underestimate anyone and don't look for fights in the first place.
Following this logic he thinks he could set up his camera to wide shot the entire room and tell everyone there ... look out I'm using all of these stations.
I just started at planet fitness and an employee told me they have teenagers taking selfies in the locker room and that there would be someone getting dressed behind them as they take the picture. I hate being filmed for someone else's stupid videos. I'll go early in the morning after work. That's when it's less busy and no teenagers are there.
I too started working out at a planet fitness and yeah I've witnessed the teens and 20 something females in the locker room doing the freaking selfies. Now Full disclosure I too have been guilty of doing my own but I make sure that no one is in my shot and if I do want to take a pic of someone I ask their permission. Consideration isn't difficult.
One thing that absolutely pisses me off is when the trainers of the gym move in with their clients and take 3 machines! Also ppl expecting others not to use a second machine that they’re super-setting with. Absolutely HATE it!
This guy later admitted he was in the wrong, and it was because he was a noob on gear for the first time, and it was making him unnecessarily combative and territorial
Yeah, that's a BS excuse. Guy didn't look aggressive, just looked like a jerk trying to flex in front of his girl. She actually seemed kinda cool and respectful.
the very last time I was in a gym, there was some bimbo that was surrounded by dudes on one of the machines. They were all hitting on her, but I was super setting and that was what I was going to use next. I shifted my work out around, so that I could give her time to move on and I wouldnt have to stop, but it came down to the end of my workout and I had no choice. I approached her and said "excuse me, do you mind if I work in". She looked at me and said "excuse me, wait your turn" and I thought she was talking about the equipment, but she legit thought that I was trying to insert myself into her stupid convo so that I could hit on her. She meant "wait your turn amongst the rest of the dudes trying to get in her pants". I told her it would be quick, I was supersetting, she was just sitting there anyhow, and she could have it right back. I just didnt want to stop. She told me to get lost. I went to the front desk and told them that I didnt know if we had a social club going on or what, but I needed to use that equipment, so unless it was hers, they needed to do something so that patrons can use the stuff without people hogging it. They told that there was nothing that they could do. I also didnt pay my bill for that month, and I lost my debit card and once I got it back, I never went back and updated the info so that they could bill me. Thanks to that whole interaction, I got a 3 month gym membership for free. And now have my own gym at home. I made them pay for the inconvenience, but they deserved it. Screw going to a gym these days. (my story s 15 years old lol)
Yeah it's just about being chill and reasonable. If I see someone alternating between 2 machines, I'll just train something else until they're done. Conversely... if I wanna do that, or just a ridiculous amount of sets on one machine, I go at a quiet time. I also don't get too attached to one exercise or machine - something else will usually get similar results.
Yeah once I needed to squat. There were 3 squat racks in the gym. 2 being used by people squatting, the other by a guy doing squat rack curls. I immediately went to him and said, nicely, "excuse me buddy I need to use this squat rack". He said something about having a few sets left. So I said no, this is a squat rack, not a Curl rack. You can do those literally anywhere else in this gym but this is the only place available for me to squat. He moved. Dick move or not? Could be argued both ways I guess, but I still feel like I was well within my rights to ask him to vacate.
It’s so annoying when they do this “uh I have to see my form” thing. Like weird how the biggest muscle dudes in my gym NEVER record or use their phones…..
At the gym I go to I've only seen two people filmin themselves. Never seen anyone exchange words in an aggressive manner with someone else too. Thats why I like the gym I go to so much
This was in my teens. My father told me when he was with me in the locker room to not hang my stuff on 3 hooks with space between. You leave space for others. That sat with me since then.
I was using the butterfly machine at my gym. The guy across from me was using incline bench for 1 set then hopped on decline bench for 1 set then walked up to me and said I'm using that machine you need to get up! I refused and let him know he can't reserve 3 machines. He walked off mumbling some bs to himself
I had a similar problem like this one time in the gym even though the guy wasn't even using the equipment first he came up to me and told me i was using it first which he even wasn't again you get other gym guys intimate others to kick you off and use the equipment
When I was a gym bunny 20 years ago, I’d be in the gym at 05:30, and out at 06:00. No one else there, I could fly through my routine and get away. I’d hate to be caught up in all this crap these days 🙄
Exactly. We need more gym etiquette education. Re-rack your weights; wipe down equipment, and don’t waste time on a machine or piece of equipment that is in high-use.
