It makes the most sense that they would assume the “Soldier” knows CPR. I never considered it weird in the og or even thought about it. Cloud saves a child’s life. That was my takeaway every time I played the game.

CPR is completely normal. If you’re certified to do CPR and someone else isn’t, it’s pretty much your responsibility to perform CPR. Age and gender play no role whatsoever; it’s a matter of life and death.

It's ridiculous for them to wait for the most trained person to slowly swim to the beach. In real life, they should have had someone on that beach doing chest compressions immediately, and then had Cloud take over when he got there, since he likely has the most training. Even if that person has to be instructed by Rhonda on how to do the compressions (although if she knows, then she should just start them herself), someone should start. No way everyone standing on that beach was incompetent. Additionally, since we're on the subject, they didn't even check Yuffie's breathing until after the Terror of the Deep was destroyed, so she would have been long dead. AND there was no impact of injury I could see to even stop a person's breathing, but I digress... - Jolie

This was not weird at all in the original game.. I played this game almost 100 times since I was 13.. It never came off as weird..or awkward Cloud is apprehensive for a second..then the village elder tells you her life is in danger.. After that cloud does CPR.. Priscilla doesn't accuse you..she just starts breathing and then the elder carries her away.. There was legit nothing weird or awkward about it.. Priscilla wakes up later and thanks you.. These ppl made the og scene awkward

The OG was weird because the CPR was turned into an awkward minigame where you have to take some epic 10-second deep breath, accompanied by calm, matter-of-fact music. To be fair I get that over here in the west we see yuffie differently for being 16 because thats how it goes over here where the legal age is 18 but at the same time in Japan the legal age is 16 which makes yuffie an adult as yuffie in the remakes also calls herself an adult, I've seen that the only reason why some people criticize anything even remotely intimate, flirty or romantic with cloud and yuffie is because they constantly bring up her age, other than that its just the typical anime trope of the main male character being put in the same situation where he ends up being called a perv by every woman that's around him in the show even when he's not trying to be a perv and this is FF7 which is clearly anime so yeah, I can see why cloud hesitated to do cpr on yuffie to be honest because I might feel the same being a guy where I have to do cpr on a woman and I have to push on her chest where her breasts are because that's how you usually do cpr so I think cloud's reaction to yuffie was understandable, also if it's worth anything, cloud never had the best relationships with anyone when he was little and the only friend he really had was tifa and given everything he went through in crisis core it messed with his mind by making him mentally 16 just like yuffie but physically hes 21 so his maturation wasn't the most ideal and the only other girl that really stuck with cloud later on was aerith but even then he still can act awkward with aerith while she's flirting with him asking him was kinda swimsuit he wanted to see on her and cloud throughout the remakes acts oblivious to every woman's obvious feelings and attraction to him which is another anime trope so basically im willing to bet clouds never had the most in depth relationships with women and aerith even tells him herself that he has alot to learn about women and yuffie comments something similar too but yeah

That joke wasn't part of the original, that was only part of the new one and it only exists because people want to act like the original was somehow scandalous. They should have just kept that scene being more or less what it was IMO... wacky CPR minigame and all.

@@FinalFantasyFiles I don't really have any beef with the mechanics of the mini-game... it was a pretty straight forward timing puzzle. Perhaps more feedback on how well you are doing would make it slightly better, but I don't think anyone had trouble with that mini-game. I do agree about the music choice outright -- situation probably deserves a little more urgency.

Guys.. the whole joke is that Cloud is just trying to help and Yuffie is the stereotype teenage girl that blabs out everything and reads stuff into everything and then makes it even more uncomfortable by turning down said person.. while the person wasnt trying anything. An adult male who knows CPR performs CPR on a young girl who isn't breathing. Obviously, that's strange weird and uncomfortable. I think it's up to you guys for being weird about it.

Performing CPR is a critical, life-saving action, and focusing on the gender of the person giving aid is unnecessary and irrelevant. The most important thing is that someone is stepping up to help in an emergency, regardless of who they are. Labeling it as "awkward" might say more about your perspective than the situation itself. Perhaps it's worth reflecting on why a life-saving act performed by an adult male would feel strange or weird to you. The focus should always be on the well-being of the person in need, not the gender of the rescuer.
He was trained in search and rescue, to save lives, males and females while a trooper. Umm, Yuffie's the victim. What's the problem? Now is not the time to get cold.

@edeilertsen7292 - Totally makes sense to ask Cloud to do CPR since he's the military guy with experience, but someone else should start chest compressions while they wait for him to slowly swim to shore so they don't lose precious time (anyone can do chest compressions -- including me and you, Aerith, Rhonda the sheriff, etc - whoever). But they probably actually should have started before we even fought the Terror of the Deep, because in my case where I didn't have any lightning materia equipped (blast), that fight took me 7 mins and she would have been long dead at that point anyway. Plus, what would have caused Yuffie, the NINJA who destroys everything she tries to destroy, to stop breathing in the first place? It wasn't for drowning -- she was in the water for half a second. And then when Cloud does help her, the writers put in some awkward scene turning an act of attempted CPR into perv misunderstanding. Not my cup of tea. Also the chest compression thing leading to a perv joke is the most anime thing ever and given how this game and the character designer / one of the original writers of the 1997 game has shown constant anime influence in multiple forms in his other works (FF8,FF10,FF13, FF Versus 13 before it was turned into 15, Kingdom Hearts, The world ends with you), docking points from any Nomura work for having anime influence is a little weird in 2024.
6:40 I mean cloud can literally fly through the air but when traversing environments we can't even cross small ponds of water. I don't think you're supposed to think to hard about because then it all falls apart Like how could Cloud be come a prisoner in Corel Prison? It doesn't make sense but it's not really supposed to after a certain point
It's basically Yufie's character to instantLy calling Cloud "Perv", even though she didn't mean it.. cz she doesn't wna be seen as fragiLe, weak and bratty, she doesn't formally thank someone for helping her, instead she want to impress other people around her that she is capable taking care of herself no matter what the situation may be.. That's why Sonon understood her even she was bossy (not just because Yufie resembles his sister) and the way she was introduced in Rebirth this way because, she was with someone who follows her command as a subordinate and just sacrificed at the end, she wanted to find someone strong and can be the same caliber as hers, that's why when she encountered Cloud after the save, she staLked him around to see if she could "recruit" him to her side..
I never thought of this, but I totally understand your thoughts. Another possible reason about why Yuffie wasn’t the hero in this situation: we learn later that she gets motion sickness and she was on a boat. That said, I don’t recall the scene pointing that out. They could’ve had Yuffie mention afterwards that she could’ve taken on the monster, but her motion sickness got to her or something.

Of course there's nothing wrong with CPR, but that's not what it was. The camera clearly frames Yufie's breasts and then shows Cloud awkwardly reaching to touch her (for chest compression obviously), all while goofy music plays. Whoever directed that scene knew what they were doing. It's a very common fan service moment that are common in almost every modern anime, but it still doesn't play well in the West. It's awkward, it's meant to be awkward, but us noticing doesn't mean it's normal. As for this take on criticizing men, I don't know where you're even getting that. It would be just as weird if Aerith, Tifa, or even Red XIII did it. Not all criticism given by women (Jolie in this case) are an attack on men. The weird political climate makes everyone think everything is woke. The scene was weird and the Japanese think this humor is funny, but it plays weird in the West. I thought the CPR mini-game was awkward but that was the only aspect I found awkward. The "misunderstanding" is a fairly common trope in Japanese writing. I've seen it enough in JRPGs and anime that I barely think about it at all. It's also a fairly common trope dir characters to have "situational" greatness. We see this in fight scenes where your party is taking on 6 or more giys with guns and then, in later cutscenes , they surrender to 3 guys with guns pointed at them. There is often a disconnect between the story the game is telling versus what goes on in gameplay. Another goid example is Tifa freaking out about Cloud killing a bunch of Shinra soldiers as if they hadn't already killed hundreds of these guys. Again, I've gotten so used to it that I barely even notice. The one trope that does still annoy me, which happens frequently in these games, is the characters not moving while their target performers an action or flees. The Sector 7 plate sequence cones to mind here. Along with a certain Gold Saucer sequence.

Also this scene is wayyy better in rebirth. It makes sense that Yuffie would be out of her element in the water. She has constant motion sickness and no she can’t just jump out the boat, Cloud can (Reactor 1 with Jessie, the dolphin minigame after this scene.)
I didn't think much of it, since if it's an emergency, anyone should do CPR, on the Rebirth version though, it might be bad timing that Cloud came to shore when the lady asked for help with CPR, maybe the lady didn't know how to do it. But Cloud swimming back to shore was the awkward part lol. Maybe Yuffie just passed out and wasn't actually drowning.

The misunderstanding trope is popular because it creates situations where characters can act out. The way the scene played out was not great because even though it seemed like a tense situation of a person in danger, the tone was meant to be awkward. Listen to the music background as the CPR happens, it has that "awkward moment" tone. Also, Cloud didn't have a sense of urgency in saving Yuffie. You can see his hesitation and nearly hear his internal monologue say, "Oh, it's a girl's body, and I have to touch it".

I remembered Priscilla and the Dolphin but didn't remembered the CPR mini game at all. I think its just a bit of japanese-shonen humor. What i took from that scene is the fact they introduced Yuffie with this scene and not randomly in the forest like in the OG, like some kine of pokemon, it was fun though
I didn’t find the original creepy or odd. The pacing of having to do the minigame was off and kind of annoying. Should have just kept it in the remake but just not had a minigame.
Why is this video getting hate? This was all objectively silly and awkward, but I did find it funny. You're supposed to suspend disbelief, its very possible that she was faking it at first to seem more vulnerable as is her silly personality. As well, she often gets motion sickness so.... That could be why she wasn't ninja-ing

My point is that lots of people should be able to do chest compressions. I don't have any military nor medical training and I could do chest compressions if someone wasn't breathing, as I imagine a lot of people on this thread could. If Cloud was on the beach with everyone else, for sure -- get the guy with the military training to do them. But when he's clear the heck out in the ocean, it's time to find someone right next to said dying girl. Obviously I’m commenting on this video in real time as I listen…lol…I agree with you that the scene now feels SO ODD. It feels like the tried to blend the original scene with a way to actually introduce Yuffie in a mandatory role. And I never even thought about Yuffie being able to just bounce out of the boat DBZ style! I’m on a new play through right now and just finished this scene. And it was…a miss. It wasn’t funny. It was…for lack of a better term…cringe?
I get why it might be not funny to Westerners. It was written for people who enjoy Japanese media (TV, film, anime etc) and get Japanese humor. I thought it was hilarious moment
They also could have had Yuffie be the one to perform CPR on Priscilla and then they could have kept the CPR mini game. I also was REALLY hoping to have Priscilla give us a new summon materia like in the OG. If I remember correctly, I believe that is where we first received Shiva.
