I managed to catch your explanation on cleaning brushes in your last live stream, but thank you very much for turning it into a video. I have the memory of a goldfish.
@@magnetic_heart better to have a dedicated isopropyl bottle, I have a sealed jar of it for stripping paint off plastic minis (since isopropyl only really hurts resin), but with all the gunk floating around in it, I wouldn't use it for cleaning my brushes as well.
Wait, so giving it a wiggle in dirty water, wiping it twice on kitchen roll, and then reforming the brush point between my lips isn't the right method??
Yeah alchohol is gonna dry the crap out the hairs. I just use moisturizing soap at the end. If they get really clogged I use AK magic potion or Tamiya paint stripper although the Tamiya stuff is pretty harsh.
Yeah... kind of a terrible recommendation unless your brush is already trashed. Brush soap should be plenty if you are doing it after every use. Tried cleaning an older but still usuable sable brush with only 70% IPA and it is pretty worthless at holding a tip now
And then I take my brushes on a 3 day spa day where they can recover with cucumber water and a full body massage. After that I feed my brushes activated eggs and emu meatballs before tucking them into bed.
I do this only on my Kolinsky sable brushes - I take care of those Series 7's like my babies.. All syntetic brushes only get the alcohol to loosen the dried paint and water rinse tretment.
I just use a neutral, not perfumed/not oily shampoo (Brushes are made of hair after all). Works perfectly, I have brushes that have halved their size because of the friction caused by months of use and yet their bristles are still straight and clean.
@trovarion how exactly do you store them upside down? Surely you don't just put them in a cup with the bristles down? Just curious if there is an easy simple solution for hanging them upside down, I am looking around and scratching my head lol
Soap is good here, if the acrylic base would be fat and not methacrylates. With plastic molecules your biggest bet would be the etanol and perhaps have some kind of conditioner. Just technical reflection
I did this last thinking it will work and it did, I just thought turpentine works but non on hand so isopropyl alcohol cleans stuff, so it should work, it did get paint out the ferrule, definitely clean with water afterwards. Strange and then I see this video, coincidence 😮
So, im kinda new to painting, whats the benefit of expensive brushes? So far ive just been replacing cheap ones but is there a reason to go through this many steps?
Everyone who ever told me "cheap brushes are enough" didn't care how their minis looked, they just wanted them painted. If a brush frays even when new the result will never be as good as with a proper brush. Have you ever tried cutting something with dull scissors? Sure, it works somehow, but it's a pain and the cut will look ugly.
@trovarion would I be annoying if I asked how? Is it about more than a good tip? Not to denounce the importance of that, already there I times I feel like I need a colored pencil. But as I'm doing this on a budget, I'd rather be able to take advantage of good quality if I decide to drop cash on it. Keep in mind that some of these will get ruined by my ADD.
@@JaredCarter6625 synthetic brushes dont hold a tip very well, and don't have great moisture retention. Which makes natural hair brushes much better for glazing. Id only recommend getting good brushes if you're going to take care of them though.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who swears by the brush soap! I also use it to lightly condition my natural hair brushes by taking some on my finger and using it to shape the bristles and let dry
@@trovarion All good, I do not watch all your content, but I do watch a lot, and its part of the reason I still paint, its really motivational and the way you explain and show things is easy to comprehend for a person who does not have an art background.
Bro...just buy some new brushes. I get that this is all a hobby and if cleaning your brushes brings you joy or makes you feel cathartic than sweet! But for real, just buy new brushes.
