You can get your snacks ,chocolates toiletries at Value Dollar, they import all these from quite a few countries, thus much cheaper . Do go to bigger outlets for more choices

If you want cheap groceries you should try hdb wet market chicken sure to be fresh and vegetables. The only difference is no air-conditioning but you learn something from the auntys and grandma picking and choosing..

I don,t really like GIANT,went to giant once and there is moldy bread and the milk is expired.I also think the vegetables are not as fresh.

It's funny how you say the things are much more expensive here in Singapore, yet when I remembered my first trip to Tesco in the UK, I said the same things about almost every product too (besides ice cream,it's crazy cheap there, iirc it was like 5 pounds for haagen daz/ben & jerrys, but they had lesser variety of flavours). Also, I carry my groceries on my backpack so i don't have to strain my hands getting them back home. To save costs, I sometimes visit the supermarket after my lectures in the evening hoping to find some discounted items so I can cook them for dinner, or just store them in the freezer.
@joesr31

Serious? I thought the prices in UK were so much cheaper. Like 500g of frozen potato wedges cost like £1. Some fruits were really cheap as well, bought entire box of strawberries for £1, sausages were cheap as well. So were the cheeses. The fresh vegetables may be more expensive because of the conversion rate. But generally UK groceries seemed cheaper for me. Except their eggs, those were so expensive

You should check out ValuDollar for snacks and chocolates much cheaper over there than anywhere else. Raw food items like veggies or fishes and meats are much cheaper at large wet markets like Geylang, Tekka or Clementi.

@@ivanlimzg Even those ValuDollar/ABC snacks Mft in Western countries, I have doubts. Once I did a cross check with company happen to be a SG home brand, why ABC stores are selling the product (not food) half the price compare to local stores. The texture was different too. Product from ABC is Made in India and the local stores are from China. Reply was they do own factory in India. Their India products are cater to India government standards.

I think prices varies in every country. I am a Singaporean living in Australia. The alcohol, ice cream and yogurts are cheap here. But because I am asian and wants my asian fix. Ginger which usually cost like less than a dollar in SG, it costs 8 bucks here in Australia. Plus, SG has to import a lot of stuffs in so the money u paying is probably for the import tax. But again, there is 5 bucks chicken rice or whatever fix for lunch/dinner if you do not want to cook! Almost impossible to get a 5 bucks meal in UK or AU.

@@GeorgiaCaney Among other chains under its wings, Jasons/Market Place, Cold Storage and Giant are owned by Dairy Farm Int'l Holdings. With Jasons/Market Place being the high-end outlet, I will assume that anything that does not sell gets moved down the chain, if you get my drift! We have shopped countless times at Giant, only to be disappointed repeatedly by the quality of their fresh fruits, poultry, fish and meat, even though it may be cheaper! Having no affiliations with any supermarket, chances are you may get better quality at reasonable prices from Fair Price, Sheng Siong or the wet markets. If not, only shop at the bigger Giant stores like edwardalcantara66 suggested. A big THANK YOU for promoting a ZERO PLASTIC BAGS campaign! In general, we have not been educated enough to care about our environment, let alone climate change. It may take another 10-20 years to fully adopt the use of recycle shopping bags instead. Even from an environment-conscious country like Australia, the major supermarkets coped a fair amount of flak from customers when it stopped supplying single-use plastic bags in July this year! Btw you can consider downloading the free XE Currency converter app on your mobile, with instant and live FX rates in any currency, eg SGD to GBP or vice visa, or more currencies if required.

I actually happen to like giant. They have un-bagged(?) produce, yay to less plastic. They also have a basket for "flawed" produce or produce that are too ripe for commercial sale and they're about 50% cheaper. Less waste. The only "negative point" Giant has is inconsistency. Larger giants are clean and well stocked, while the smaller ones are kind of shabby and shelves are often empty or low in stock.

Haha Justin sneaked in some lava cakes! Anyway if you're shopping frequently at NTUC you can sign up for the Linkpoints membership which can probably save you about 1-2% for receipts above $20. If you want NTUC delivered instead, Shopback has 2% cashback for Fairprice Online! For yoghurt I usually get a huge tub which is cheaper per weight of yoghurt. You can also have some local vegetables apart from prepacked spinach. For example, I like steamed kai lan with some sesame oil and dark soy sauce drizzled on it.

A large part of the plastic packaging is due to Singapore's reliance on external sources of produce. A lot are shipped in from overseas hence the protective plastic packaging. Especially for perishables.

you can go to the fresh seafood section in Sheng Siong and buy the whole salmon (they'll scale, clean and chop into steak sizes for you) and freeze it. Lasts me and my parents for like a month or more depending on how we use it. The salmon head can be used to make fish soup with ginger, garlic, abit of chicken stock. I mean it is cheaper but u can compare them by weight

NTUC used to have their produce un-packaged and you would have to package and weigh them yourself. I actually liked that concept better since it enabled consumers to bring their own reusable produce bags or have the liberty to not use bags at all. Still not sure why they started packaging their produce though. Maybe there were too many aunties squishing the produce and damaging them lol jk

Hey Georgia, just a lil recommendation. I live in the West area, and if you would like to go to a bigger Fairprice, i recommend going to Bukit Panjang Plaza! There's a variety of products there if you live in the West area. And the best part, it's two levels! There's another place in JB which is called MyDin. It's super cheap and you can buy a lot of stuffs there! Kinda like a Walmart of America. If your budget is ever tight for groceries like mine, do check this place out! It's cool!

I always shop for chocolates and potato chips at Mustaffa Center. No other place in Singapore carries such a wide and diverse range of chocolates than Mustaffa. For example, you can find Cadbury chocolates that are not only directly imported from UK but also from Australia and the middle east. You can find similar imported chocolates from various parts of the world and the prices for them are quite reasonable. Quality Street chocolates are also available there in different size packaging and I think the one that you bought actually cost lesser in Mustaffa and is also imported from the UK.

Hi Georgia, for Hagen Daz (or Ben & jerrys - its too sweet imo) , you can wait for the discount of 2 pints for $20 sometimes. When there is such offer in ntuc, do go early as all the flavours are grabbed if you go a few days late.. unless they restock. Sometimes they don't. Try to look at newspapers or on internet for monthly / weekly ntuc promotions.

Tbh, it is better to get alcohol on Lazada or Qoo10. It is much cheaper than the supermarket prices, and you can pick it up at nearby collection points (varies from 7-11 stores, etc) Your best bet is the wet markets, you can easily get a week's worth of food for $50 or less. The only problem is when you need to learn mandarin to get better prices while bargaining. Also, you might want to consider NTUC, Sheng Shiong and Giant. These 3 offer a much lower price and you can collect points to redeem.

Another way of getting cheaper deal is go to a wet market, of course Fairprice helped to exclude the experience of walking down crowded market with wet floor and packaging. Sheng Shiong is good too - but I'd say Fair Price and Giant are my go to places most of the time...

As people mentioned before, there are places like Value Dollar and Sheng Shiong, Giant for cheaper alternatives. And perhaps sign up for a membership like Passion Card or Ntuc card. ^^ Also, as you've said it yourself, the wet markets are great for fresh produce. You're able to get Salmon for $5 and a good sized fish for that price as well. Wait for offers / promotional discounts to get treats :> Snacks / Sweets like "After Eight" are available at Value dollar for way cheaper. Those prices are high because of the festive season packaging >

Looks like Coronation Plaza Fairprice Finest. Have u tried shopping at the “normal” ntuc or sheng siong? FFinest is like a specia ntuc like cold storage. It was started that way in the past.

Wee Ching commonwealth and coronation aren’t exactly “nearby”. The probably shop at coronation because their rental unit is nearby.

I'd say go to a wet market to get fresh produce and meats. It's probably cheaper and if you want to save the environment you can bring your own containers and reusable bags.

Go for the wet markets in Singapore. Things there are more fresher and cheaper.

Diary products, beef, salmon, alcohol, imported fruits, European and Japanese foodstuff are costly in Singapore. If I don't see a need to eat them often, I only buy them when they are on sale.

Being a Singaporean, it is unusual even for my friends (in our mid twenties) to visit wet markets now. It is a BIGGGG learning curve but i hope it doesn't discourage you from going again and again and again :)

The alcohol prices, I understand, taxes. However, the ice cream prices are just ridiculous. I love it when I visit the UK and buy Ben&Jerry’s for £2.5.

Just thought to let you know Georgia that in Australia a small tub of Haagen-Dasz Ice cream is $11.50, where as you pointed out in Singapore the same ones are $5.50. Australia isn’t cheap either unfortunately. xoxo
