In this video I'll show you that this is how you make awesome techno beats on a TR 909.
I can't even begin to tell you how influential this machine is. It's Techno, It's House... And if you count in Schooly D and Soul II Soul, it's even Hip Hop and Soul Funk. Roland however, thought that they had made another failure machine and discontinued itafter only 10k units. It's one of the most used and sought after sounds and I'm happy to share this with you!

High quality content as always. Your skill to program patterns and make them all work well together is sick. Have you tried Roland Cloud TR-909? Interesting to know how it compares to the real thing.
@AnalogKitchen
@AnalogKitchen 3 года назад
I have not. I know the samples are amazing. The thing with the 909 though is the timing. That makes up a ot of the sound impact so this is something I believe might be hard to copy
@2point7182818284590
@2point7182818284590 3 года назад
@@AnalogKitchen The Cloud 909 uses modelling for the analogue parts of the TR-909. For some reason it's harder to make cut through the mix. Anthony Rother gave up on Roland's digital emulations because of that. The Cloud 909 sounds legit on first impression, though - much more legit than the other 909 VSTs out there. It would be really interesting if you could compare the Cloud 909 to the real deal, I'm sure such video would be of huge interest. You can subscribe to the Roland Cloud free of charge for a trial month and cancel your subscription without making any actual payment.

@AnalogKitchen
@AnalogKitchen 2 года назад
I prolly should... Digitone comes to mind... What says you?
@Schimelln
@Schimelln 2 года назад
So many flavours there! Generally I would start to look at 4OP(erator) ones. The Digitone packs a punch with its sequencing but personally I prefer the old stuff sonically more. For instance the Digitone has substractive Filters in it which takes away from learning to utilise what Fm Synthesis stands for IMO, like controlling brightness through the operator Levels etc.; One of the classics are the Yamaha TX81z/DX11, nice because you get different waveforms. I started programming from the front panel but a Programmer or controller is recommended. The sound is INSANE on these. Such colourful and expressive Tones. There is the new Mega FM which is based on the old Sega Megadrive chip: gritty!! Hands on controls but not as wide range as the Yamaha’s IMO. So more one trick ponyish. Another new one with good programming, modern features and very punchy is the Reface DX, powerful! Last but not least the new Korg OPSix, might be a bit overkill as it’s very deep but def has that sound. If you got an iPad FM4 is a good app recreating that DX11 vibe. You see, lots to choose from but in the end you’ll do nothing wrong jumping into the wierd FM tones!! Programming is fun and you’ll have many wtff moments. It can do disgustingly digital to very warm, naturalist sounds. Feel free to whenever shoot me a msg and I can def send you some recourses about it!! Best

Good question! It's not the master as it get's its own midi pulse from the ER-M. The answer though is YES. A big fat yes. The 909 is for its imperfect, (and therefor) amazing groove. Not too loose, not too tight. And never, never ever predictable. This is something modern day boxes like drumbrute, tr8, tr8s etc all have unfortunately. You need a bit of inconsistency on your drums. Preferably inaudible but just enough. That's the 909 for ya!
@wackerburg
@wackerburg 3 года назад
@@AnalogKitchen I asked myself this very same question, too. I regard the 909 as the main driving force of my setup. So it naturally should be the master clock. That being said, I also have an E-RM Multiclock which by design kinda "wants" to be the master clock. And then I utilize an Akkai MPC 2000 XL, which unfortunately has a bug where you can't re-assign the destination for its note-variation slider while the unit is synced to an external MIDI clock. And I would like to use that. I can control for instance the tuning of a certain pad/sample and may want to change that during operation. I mean, I could stop the MPC's channel on the Multiclock, re-assign the fader and put it in play mode again. That needs a tad more time AND stops all sounds coming from the MPC so a move like that needs to be well-integrated into the performance. --- I really just wonder how the groove of the 909 is affected by syncing it to an external clock. It does feel solid as a sync slave, too. And then, does it make a difference if the 909 is being fed MIDI clock or DIN sync? Mine is V1 and I don't see much sense in upgrading it to V4 just because it may have hiccups using MIDI as a sync source. It looses the ability to save and load via Tape Memory jacks. So I sync the 909 with DIN sync. I am very aware of the nuances in both timing and sound and also appreciate that very much. I am totally with you on that in contrast to modern machines. Nothing beats a 909 for Techno and House, that's why I pulled the trigger and finally got one. I checked all the existing alternatives and went straight for the original in the end. Did not regret that purchase a single second. That machine really is fire. After that experience, I could not resist getting an 808, too. Same result. Sounds so pleasant and present at the same time. Really impressive.
@AnalogKitchen

What is a shame is that we become the nitpicking few that are deemed ‘purist’ because we might have a thing or two to think about B-Winger and their clone wars. Maybe I’m just old. But growing up with listening to Mantronix, Herbie Hancock, Afrika Bambataa, Kraftwerk, Model 500, Depeche Mode, Vince Clark etc leaves an impression. And coming close is never the same as being original. There is a reason why the sounds sit the way they sit within a track. There is a reason why certain things relate to a certain groove and one of the most important things I’ve learned is that the groove of anything is in between the drums. That the relation of a groove measure is determined by its relation to another measure. So just copying the same trick is not the same feeling. Even if you numb the audience not to listen for it as if it’s not important. (Rant mode off). V4 does a significant other thing to the 909 so you might want to still consider sticking that eeprom on there. The multiclock does not ‘straighten’ the 909 as I believe it’s like Excalibur and can only be wielded by particularity. The sync cycles it gets leaves enough room for the 909 to breath. As a matter a fact, the MPC live has a harder time trying to adapt to the Er-m. I guess electronica listens better than zero’s and one’s.
@wackerburg
@wackerburg 3 года назад
@@AnalogKitchen Yes, I checked some demos of the b-winger machines and hardly can stand them. And I don't have to, so I turn them off quickly. The behaviour // ethics of that company is not to my liking either. It actually does not surprise me that a newer MPC has problems on the MIDI side. One has to keep in mind that Akai now has nothing to do with the Akai that brought us the MPC in the first place. Roger Linn and Akai split after the 3000. I've had awful experiences with an MPC 1000, which was really the start of the decline. I regard the 3000 as the best, both in sound and stable timing. Build quality is superb, too. But it lacks one feature that I really use a lot. The ability to mute/solo tracks from the 16 pads. So I went with an MPC 2000 XL, after many years of owning a classic 2000. Got both of them new when they came out. Can you please specify the "significant other thing" that the v4-update offers? I'm glad I discovered your channel. Really enjoy what you are doing! :-) --- Edit: I also have an empty pattern on the 16th button, hehe. Pattern 15 on the other hand is a for-to-the-floor-kick drum only pattern on my 909. I have thought about doing what you do with different versions of the same pattern. I have to think about a backup strategy // pattern management // export.import anyways as the first bank is completely filled now. Just disovered the second bank, but that's already 2/3rds full, too :-D I do utilize an external mixing console because I liked external summing better than the 909's internal summing plus all the possibilites I get when using individual outputs. I basically use the board as a pattern variation tool. You may check out a test video I did some months ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6krBb7jRrl0.html
