As a person doing transcription, I have a varying opinion on filler words. The amount of people, usually those with the highest levels of education, overly season their sentences with um, uh, like, I mean, you know, but, and so, etc., is staggering. However, when I'm NOT doing transcription, it's not all that noticeable :) I would SO rather you both speak in that super-relaxed manner because curating speech is painful.
Caroline, don't change your ways! Jess, please don't change your ways too! You two are perfect opposites! And you both are perfectly imperfect. I like myself, and I am pretty mature (in my 50s), but still I want to be like both of you, and I want to have friends just like the two of you.
I don't even see them as opposites. And every time they say "one lover and one hater" I think to myself "no... that doesn't feel right.." Caroline is not a hater at all in my eyes. She just has the right pinch of sarcasm. But what do I know?!.. Maybe she's a mass murderer and bully at night. 😂😂

My black-jewish bf is sitting in the living room with me and overheard. He has strong feelings opposing Drake, but says he admires Jess' hustle. With my name also being Jess, he also adds that "the love for black-jewish men must be a universal Jess thing" 😂
One of the most important things I remember from taking English literature classes in college is this concept that "the author is dead," which usually refers to the fact that the author's intentions when writing a novel or essay or what have you do not matter at all in comparison to what is actually on the page and how it can be interpreted by an individual reader. Straight white males from the 1800s probably did not intend to be sexist or racist, but we as modern readers can obviously point out how problematic the way they wrote was. If an author intends to write an epic love story and it turns out to be super super boring and not even romantic, people have every right to criticize that. I feel like it should be applied to cancel culture too. The author's life and actions outside of the work do not alter the peace of art that they created. I understand people not wanting to continue to give money towards living artists who have committed crimes, etc, but I'm not sure anyone is a terrible person for enjoying a song written by a known rapist... Unless something in that song itself conveys twisted, nonconsentual lyrics
-was she against gays? -no i think it was trans -oh yeah i don't like her for that so you don't even know what she did and IF she did it at all, but still dislike her? that's literally cancel culture i honestly tried to understand why people were upset with her. if you ask them, NO ONE will be able to tell you what she did. they just 'heard' that she was 'a bad person'. i went through her twitter and there she said that she supports trans people, but not convicted rapists that decide to identify as trans the second they get sentenced to jail time. is she really wrong for that?
And those men who claim to be trans are then put in women’s prisons and guess what happens to women being held in those prisons when rapsists are admitted? So much that people have knee-jerk reactions to with so little understanding of the situation.

I was just going to listen on spotify but I wanted to check if there was extra footage on here and there is! Does it make a difference to you, whether I watch the pod on youtube or listen on spotify? Which option is more profitable? I switch between the two based on what's more convenient for me but if one is better for you I'll keep that in mind. Also, since I do flipflop between the apps, could you add the episode number on youtube as well? Since the titles aren't the same I sometimes get confused. Edit: also if you intended to cut the part about Caroline's therapy session, you did leave it in!
Oh and yes! The titles are often different on YT but the ep number will always be in the corner of the thumbnail image, as well as in the episode description! Does that help?
Just started this episode, but have to say that I think it's great when you are talking with someone whom you can interrupt in that excited way and they get it and it's not all formal and polite and careful, because I do have people I have to speak with very carefully so they won't be offended that I spoke too quickly, and it just kills a lot of the spirit of the communication when you keep trying to edit yourself in the moment.
I mean I noticed last episode Caroline maybe talking more but ALSO Jess said she was incredibly sick and not going to talk a lot and still put up like a champ and was keeping up the whole time, y'all are such a pair the excitement for y'all to be together shows through and that's what matters imo
People who complain about filler words are way more annoying than people who use them. There is of course a point where it genuinely becomes hard to understand what the other person is trying to communicate, but honestly that might be a speech impediment and pointing it out is rude (and you're not at that point at all). Also regarding cursing, there's a fine line. People who basically switch out filler words for curse words are actually really hard to listen to, but I don't think we need to censor ourselves completely. Caroline's cursing has never gotten to a point where it even sticks out. It's just a way to communicate, and youtube is not church or grandma's house. If you can't stand a fuck here and there, don't fucking watch youtube.
Really interesting discussion of cancel culture. Where do we find the balance between having some agreed-on public sense of what is acceptable behavior, and rushing to condemn people to shame and rejecting their work, sometimes based on rumors or joining in a popular take on someone? It's difficult, in that a lot of bad behaviors can never be prosecuted in court, and we can't always know the truth. If it's a reaction to someone's statements, that's easier, but it still involves the debate about how we relate to their earlier work. I don't know the answers, but I feel we need to support those who have been hurt, while also being aware of the dangers of a Mao-like culture of fear and shaming, where no one is free to express what they think.
Wait, who watches their RU-vid videos subscriptions on a routine? The level of organisation or free time you must have….I admire that! I’d be curious to see statistics on how many subscribers actually care about the release date of a video… As long as it’s every week I’m good 😅

@34:08 I just wanted to add to this thought here (hi I’m month late) (also I paused here and typed so sorry if you go on to mention this) Anyway… in your example (of the breakup survival RU-vidr dude) yes it sounds like he has some lessons to learn - but also sometimes I have to stop myself and ask, “am I the one to teach him the lesson?” Maybe! maybe if it’s something I’m passionate about then yeah. But “cancel culture” has people out here internet mobbing people over every perceived mistake. Everyone feels real good about themselves when you’ve spent your week pointing out everyone else’s flaws. As if we don’t all make mistakes. Why would we want it to be ok to ridicule and shame and ruin people for mistakes? And like you said - ok, some offenses, yes. But we’ve really got to be more selective and introspective.

I think the cancelation of public figures for something deemed "inauthentic" is spot on, ESPECIALLY in entertainment, and ESPECIALLY influencers. We follow because we relate and if we find out it's all a lie it's not even cancelation as much as it's just not appealing to watch their content anymore. I think "cancelation" should be limited to actually harmful crimes, otherwise if it isn't what you built your career on and undermines the foundation of WHY people like you, then call people out for bad shit and leave it at that, we all have skeletons in the closet and bad mistakes Don't try to stop someone from being able to make a living to be vindictive. If you don't like them anymore though, don't watch

Getting more and more angry listening to the first 15 minutes of this podcast. The whole reason I love RU-vid (and you Caroline in particular) is because you are real., you are passionate, and you speak like a normal human. If I wanted to watch robots who either don’t use filler words, or have them edited out, and people who are trained to speak without emotion or curses, well then I’d just tune into ABC/NBC/FOX and sit and watch “tv” with my 75 year old Dad every evening.
I understand these are opinions and I’m choosing to listen for entertainment, and I disagree with statements related to Jk Rowling and Ye formerly known as Kanye. I’m not die hard, and I’ve no interest fighting to disprove everything (or anything, really) for them, but from what I’ve gathered and understood these two are not as claimed (I mean by the general public opinion) 🤷🏻♀️💁🏻♀️

In regards to Cancel Culture, I think generally speaking people are only "cancelled" if when something from their past or present becomes public knowledge they attempt to dismiss, justify, double-down on whatever the original problematic behaviour was. This obviously only applies to behaviour that is not especially egregious! Two people that come to mind for me would be the Director Cary Joji Fukunaga, the public accusations against him have pretty much shattered any crush I had on him. The second is the singer Børns, I loved his music. If the accusations against these men are true then I am fine with them not having their careers any more!
