What is the meaning of the video and song?

The most popular version : The song’s about their music and how it’s like chlorine. Chlorine, in small doses, cleans water and can even be healthy for you. Chlorine can be essential for survival in certain situation because it’s so good at cleaning water; however, the chemical is also poisonous and can kill you if you ingest too much. He is saying that his music is the same way to him. He needs it to survive (it’s a moneymaker, but also saves him psychologically and emotionally), but it can overtake him and kill him. “This beat is a chemical”. Without it, he would die. But too much of it can also kill and destroy him. Ned (this funny creature) represents Tyler's (singer) creativity. And they start filling up the pool, but ned is not satisfied until it is completely filled with chlorine (until song is close to perfect for Tyler ).

Ned, the little guy, is the personification of Tyler's creative process: he needs to be coaxed out. For a song to be right, everything else has to be right. It's a balancing act. Tyler has said in interviews that he likes to personify certain intangible aspects of his life. It gives him the means to "look across to them at the table" and interact with "them," if that makes sense. He did the same thing with the character Blurryface on the previous album, which represented his anxiety/depression.etc. If you have the time, even if not in a reaction video, search for some interviews. I think you'll grow to appreciate the guys even more than you already do. Nice job!

I’ll try and make it quick. NED is the character in the video. He represents Tyler’s creativity. It’s hard to please. It’s a song about his song writing process. Things have to be just right to please (the chlorine levels in the pool). Chlorine is toxic at high levels but also cleansing and this is a perfect element for him him to use as a metaphor for his song writing. Mental health has always been a strong theme in their music and song writing is extremely taxing on Tyler. Song writing is also how he copes so in low doses it’s actually healing for him like it was when he started out with low pressure. That’s the gist of this.

Theory: Ned is the name of the creature in the music video. What if Ned represents Tyler’s mental health because any mental health issue is a chemical imbalance in your brain. And what is chlorine? A chemical. What if this video is Tyler trying to be happy again? This could be why Ned is mostly white because white signifies purity but his mental health issue is still there hence Ned’s black eyes. Tyler feels like he’s finally getting there with help from josh/ he’s relying on him which is why josh does most of the work because that’s how Tyler sees him. When there is enough chemicals in the pool (Tyler’s brain) Ned jumps in which could signify his mental health being positive as both Tyler and Ned seems happy and relaxed. In the water Ned grows horns which means that the chemicals being balanced in Tyler’s brain causes Ned to become more powerful as Tyler has become happier. When the pool empties it could mean that Tyler’s mental health has become worse which is why it’s so dark in there and then Ned comes to show Tyler that there still hope for him. The black legs you see in front of the camera could be josh as Tyler could believe that josh has given up on him/ Tyler feels numb around everyone so they’re just black silhouettes. The cup given to Tyler by Josh could be medication for his mental health issue and he looks at Ned to see his opinion on taking medication but Ned doesn’t approve of it. Which is why the video ends with Tyler looking down at the cup. I believe that Ned thinks that Tyler can get through it by himself if he just believes enough.

Creation of the music. Trying to get it just right. He's working on it, not ready or sure if Ned'll like it, once it's finished and ready, he eats it all up. Growing in the process. Once it's done and Tyler's given it all, Ned comes back for more, but all he's got is a little bit, not ready. Goes in for a taste, doesn't like it. Makes Tyler question if it's any good. Chlorine is the content/ music/ creativity. Ned I think is supposed to be the fans, eating up the content and wanting more. At least, that's how I interpreted it

Ode to Sleep the official video is a great one to do next...its a doc style vid that takes you on their journey from the beginning...really powerful and inspiring!

I think this song is also about their character clancy and their love hate relationship with keons, and his unknowing of where his home is. In the song he says “I plan my escape from walls they confined” thus reminds me of Clancy’s letters talking about him looking over the walls of dema and trying to see beyond. It also talks about him running for his life in his letters he says something about running as fast and as long as he possibly can. After he saw the event of jumpsuit. Towards the end of the song it says “I’m so sorry I forgot you” I think this is talking about after Clancy gets taken back by keons He calls dema home again and gets back into the control the bishops put over them Much like the mood changes of the song in chlorine.

if you ever get the opportunity you need to see them live. it completely changes your perspective and meaning of the band. you can seriously see a different level of mastery and depth to tylers lyrics. seeing them live changed my life. i was a fan before i saw them live and i wanted to go, but now i would kill to see them live

My interpretation of this music video before I read about it on the internet was something like the little guy Ned is the creativity of Tyler. Chlorine if taken in acceptable amount can be healthy but be fatal in high dose. Chlorine is music. Twenty One Pilots were in a sabbatical and everyone were asking where they are. At the start of the song you hear, "so where are you". "When I leave, don't save my seat. I'll be back when it's all complete." Probably means he doesn't want his fans wondering what happened to the band, don't want them to reserve expectation and don't want the fans to hurry him and Josh. They will be back when they are fully ready to come back, with creativity that fills the pool. The water can be symbolized as their album, they start with nothing, no water, then they fill it up with water, and Ned jumps in with creativity, he's the final touch, he doesn't jump in until the pool is perfect for him to jump in, like when Tyler thinks the album is ready to be shipped. "The lead is terrible in flavor . But now you double as a papermaker." I'm thinking they're talking about lead, as in pencil. You use lead to write down your song. "My body lives on lead". Again, he's talking about how lead is the moneymaker for him. You write your lyrics on a paper with pencil, lead is a papermaker. Don't know if I'm reaching too much, just thought it was something cool.

here's what i think a part of the chlorine music video is. chlorine, is a song from the trench album. they say that because of all of the chemicals when people fought in the war, the muddy water inside of the trenches had a chlorine taste

I am a big TØP fan and Tyler loves for everyone to see each song from your own perspective. I see view the video as the chlorine being self love and Ned (the creature) being happiness or your inner self, Ned needs to have the chlorine to come out and be his best self just as you can’t be happy with a life full of negativity. I feel that it’s hard to type what the song means to me but I see it as a more broken down version of the video description. :))

I'm not sure if it's been said as I've only just seen the vid, but i read somewhere that Ned, the little creature in the vid, is representing God, can't remember the full theory but that's what I read 🤔🤷🏼‍♀️👍🏻oh and I also read that "the moment is medical" means that the moment he thinks of the lyric us important because hes gotta get it down before he forgets, or something along those lines, again cant remember the full theory off the top of my head🤦🏼‍♀️😂 This is only one theory of many ^
