Lena the Handler is actually a really good tactical commander but since there's an ace pilot like Shin in Spearhead, she doesn't really need to give them "orders" and etc. That's why she's falling off in battles, but even so she's still there and supports them with great info about the battlefield and the enemy. She's like the youngest to make the rank Major if I'm not mistaken.

personally i never once thought even after just ep 2 that most of these characters wouldn't survive, to the point where i only cared about the main 2 and the rest were expendable later i honestly though everyone could die in the finally, none (for me) ever seemed like that had a chance of living long.. (besides again the main 2)

As the chat said: is not that Lena is that bad at her job, it's just that this is basically the elite squadron and she is relatively new at it, but let's hope she improves soon 😅 Btw these are the chill episodes, let's see how the rest of the season goes! The humanish things are just walking mines, and it’s just going to blow you up But since the Legions aren’t allowed to make stuff that look like human, it looks a bit distorted Legions also have other things that they can’t do built into their codes, such as having an air force or nuclear weapons

I know you've finished the show (so far) all that, and have probably changed your mind or opinion on a lot of characters.. But Lena is doing basically everything she can from what she has at her disposal. And not only that, but she is doing it alone. No one else is even trying. The episode before she even refrained from making any unrealistic or lofty promises to "fight with them" because she knew that she just isn't able to fulfill that promise. She is doing a lot by supplying them with information both on the large map, and during combat. But that's really about all she can do. She has also learned to not be as intrusive as she was early on, and is instead relying on the squads' ability to handle it themselves.

A little defense for the Major here. The main issue is because this is Spearhead squadron. 1st off with Shin being able to "hear" Legion, he is able to give better battlefield orders and control than she can with her limited information. This leads to reason 2, which is a bit of a spoiler, but you should be on at least episode 10, so you'll know this by now. Spearhead is where 86 are sent to die. It is made up of the most veteran and hardened soldiers, the ones close to their 5 years of service. And they can't just get their 5 years and be given citizenship, so they are sent to Spearhead and sentenced to death by the higher ups. Therefore, the Major is restrained. She isn't allowed to send out aircraft to scout and properly assess the situation. She isn't given access to artillery or even proper resupply capabilities. But she still tries like going and stealing the last map of the area to get it to them. The big thing about her is she cares for them and tries to get as many of them through the combat as she can with any resources she can. She fights for them so they may get off the battlefield, even though there isn't much she can do while they are actively fighting.

Also you should totally go back after you get past the first ending and watch it from episode 2 about half way through and the final time they show it. It hits so hard seeing that

One thing to remember about Lena the handler is compared to the rest of the handlers she actually gives tactical information and actually cares when they die the others just sit there laughing and placing bets on who’s next to die however you will see Lena do bad ass stuff later on

This was an anime for RU-vid. You need to truly focus on everything (dates, dialogues...) not the chat Lena is a idealilstic naive princess who is starting to see reality. And usually the 86 dont have so many info as this group has so Handlers "do more useful job" This Spearhead is a group of survivors. They are very very good in what they're doing. And Shin being an esper who hears the voices of the dead (and so knowing when the enemy is going to attack... that's why he doesnt patrol) makes them way over Lena right know. She'll become a Queen soon And about Rei... he just reached his breaking point....

The battle scene in this episode was an anime-original addition and not in the light novel. How can you tell? Simple: Lena has no dialogue in it.

You're actually joking? Comparing the attention 86 gets vs Steins Gate is nuts. Sure Steins Gate is not talked about that much compared to popular big mainstream shows, but it made its name and a lot of people have heard of it. 86 on the other hand though...
