This is the best performance car of the last 25 years | PistonHeads

The PH audience voted for the Toyota GR Yaris, Lotus Elise S1, BMW M5 E39, Caterham 620R and Porsche Carrera GT as the best performance cars since 1998 - but there can only be one winner.
To do that, we needed to bring the winners of the best sports car, hot hatch, saloon, track car and supercar since 1998 together in an epic showdown, with Snowdonia serving as the stage for our series finale. The M5 arguably blueprinted of the modern-day performance saloon; the GR Yaris marking the return of the all-weather homologation special; driving thrills don't get anymore pure than the 620R; and the Elise redefined the British sports car. Oh and then there's the part Le Mans, part-F1-derived Porsche Carrera GT with a screaming V10 and a manual 'box. All landmark performance cars over the last 25 years - but only one can wear the crown.

Me and my partner in Munich had two of the first E 39 M5s in 1999. Lovely car! In my opinion, the true M5 of today is the Giulia QV. Light, smooth, fast, analog. No iPad nonsense and touchscreen mania. Purity.

I share your concern, but I’m not completely sure it will be as bad as you fear. I think (hope maybe) that synthetic fuels produced with low carbon footprint, could offer a real solution to the continuation of combustion engines. I know as it stands, several countries plan to ban the sale of non-hybrid combustion engines within the next 10-20 years, but politicians break commitments all the time, and if synthetic fuels become more viable then there’s a real chance we could still see them on the road 50-100 years from now. In terms of cars becoming soulless dull entities all about transporting people efficiently and nothing else, in any era there’s a significant % of cars which are exactly that, I remember many an awful product from British Leyland that exactly fit that description too. Fun drivers cars for petrol heads, have always been a small % of the market, but there’s no reason I can see that that won’t continue to be available (many great cars to choose from brand new right now).

Don't worry so much. See watches - classic, mechanical, purposeful watches command premium value and are aspirational, against quartz as commodity. See planes - we still learn and study a propeller plane, and while we don't buy old 1940 planes we still aspire to a Cessna. EVs have their place, moving people who don't find joy in the use of it, and for the rest of us ... 👍🏻

I shared your mindset when the pro level RC world was transitioning from nitro fuel to electric and lithium. No personality. Boring RCs. yadda yadda. I got over that really quick once i realized how much more freedom i had in designing my RC builds when i didn't have to factor in slipper clutches, driveshafts, etc. And the speed.. the instant speed! I'll still take my old nitro cars out for a spin in good weather, but now many years into electric's domination in the hobby - my old nitro cars feel clunky and dated. Retro fitted kits are already happening. It won't be long before you start seeing electric converted classics on the regular. Effortlessly making 500+lbs of torque, and taking up less space compared to the pushrod mill they replaced. As for character - there's plenty to be had. Per-wheel tuning to create drift monsters. On demand AWD , rear bias, fully tunbable left to right actuation, you name it. Electric conversions are poised to transform offroading, bobbyist motorsport, and grassroots hotrodding. And as things get better and more adopted, you'll see a lot more dialing in the "Real feel" - similar to the way petrol cars have been doing for over a decade. Your newer car almost certainly has electric steering, and possibly has drive modes that make the steering feel lighter or heavier... gives you a quicker "rack" or slow and cruisy... infinite "feel" tuning. (my mini jcw does this. and although i'm a hydraulic steering purist - the mini comes damn close to the same responsiveness and feel thanks to these adjustable modes)

Ultima - don't believe me, check out the Top Gear lap time, 6.2 seconds per lap faster than the Ferrari Enzo and 4.0 seconds per lap faster than the £1.5million Bugatti Veyron... and at under 100K to build one... If that is to extreme, then Porsche Caymen for perfect balance of reliability, cost, weight distribution, luggage space etc... It can be used as an everyday driver.
@eugenux
@eugenux 10 месяцев назад
you miss the point; ultimate lap times are for kids and ppl with big egos(and small *you know what*); for a driver, it is all about the experience; those cars, from the video, offer that in spades..and then some more!

@eugenux
@eugenux 10 месяцев назад
@@maryginger4877 there is no such thing as a practical every day driving in a super/sports car. A low slung, low weight, no comfort creatures, ultimate speed machine will never be anything else than a track weapon. All the cars on the list ar road cars that can(and should) be used on the actual roads. None of them ar track toys refugees on the streets. Like I have said earlier.. I believe you are missing the point.

Cool video, all amazing cars….but, and please take this with a pinch of salt, it’s purely my opinion, I think this list is seriously flawed, omitting some obvious contenders. If we’re taking exciting, legendary driving experiences I think the M3 CSL e46 is a better pick than the m5 (and that’s coming from a hardcore manual man!). Also where’s the S2000, widely regarded as having one of the best gearshifts ever put in a car, revvs out to 9k, and has the best variable valve timing in the business. The Noble m12 GTO 3r, is just about the best pure handling car ever to grace public roads, has the most intoxicating turbo blow off 👌 Then to the super cars, if you do a poll of the best sounding v10, the landslide winner will invariably be the Lexus LFA. And finally the Ariel atom, as a pure thrill and acceleration machine there’s simply nothing more exciting you can buy. All of the above would be my finalists, but as I say purely my opinion, I’m just a raging petrol head through and through.

Why wasn't there a "supercar" category eg 911/Evora/R8/Huracan/McLaren etc? This would have nicely bridged the gap between the Elise (a sportscar that is great to drive but difficult to live with) and the Porsche (a hypercar that is too valuable to use). I'm sure one of these supercars would actually have come out as the overall winner, had it been included.
@marktickle8480
@marktickle8480 10 месяцев назад
There was a supercar category that went to public vote, the Porsche won. NSX, McLaren, LFA, various Ferrari and Lamborghini were all included, even a Nissan.
@pjay3028
@pjay3028 10 месяцев назад
@@marktickle8480 I would have thought the Porsche was a step up from a supercar, I would class that as a hypercar personally. Just maybe that's why it won that class 😂😂presumably they were just making absolutely sure a 911 couldn't win?

Not sure if CF would make it much lighter. The clams are light anyway and the chassis may drop a few kg of CF. An NA V6 that came in as light as the K series would be great, albeit very expensive! Exige 430 has lots of CF and a (SC) V6, comes in at circa 300kg more, different thing altogether
