TVR Sagaris review: did Blackpool save the best for last? | PistonHeads

Don’t let the wild looks fool you; the Sagaris was arguably the most complete TVR. Shame it would also be the last...
To say TVR had a questionable reputation for build quality back in the day would be a bit of an understatement. The fledgling PistonHeads forums were awash with owners searching for solutions to their problems - or at least venting about them. So when TVR came to develop the Sagaris, it challenged itself to fix a leaky ship. The result was probably the most rational TVR to date and quite possibly the best - but it couldn't save the firm at the time. With PistonHeads celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2023, we sent Cam to HPC Classics to get acquainted with the car that oh so nearly turned TVR’s fortunes around.

The "Racing Green Sagaris" video on TVR's site back in the early 2000's was something I downloaded and watched hundreds of times as a teenager in High School, here in Canada. When I'd show my friends the video (who were completely uninterested in cars) even they'd shout out in agreement that it was indeed "Wicked!" or "Sweet!" and lamented in how the car was unavailable here. 15 years or so later and I still want one. I think I'll have to work towards it over the next few years, before prices go out of control!

I have spoken with the engine designers ex-TVR and the reason for the side exit exhaust was to curb drive by noise so it could be type approved. They disconnected the near side on and had all the exhaust through the offside then drove it past the noise test rig without the independent validators realising. It worked so they kept the look.

Peter Wheeler had a point, because all the nanny state electronics introduced over the subsequent decade have only created worse, drivers who have no idea how to manage a car when and if it gets out of shape for any reason…. Modern super cars maybe easy to get in and drive and yes you could throw the keys to your grand parents, but it doesn’t make it safe because interventions only occur once something has already gone wrong and that’s the wrong way to introduce road safety, versus train drivers so they know what to avoid and what situations not to get into beforehand.

yes and no I had my ass saved by esp couple of times not when driving fast but normal driving when you are not fully ready to be going sideways and conditions surprise you like bad road surface and dried leaves that are also wet … If there was no esp on my car I would probably be in the guardrail because I would simply be to late to react. If you drive fast and concentrate fully on driving fast that is where i kinda agree with you 😃 but on the other hand you might be right maybe my approach to driving would be different on that day if I knew I am in something that gives you no safety blanket and I am on my own 🤔 Or I might just put it in a hedge anyways 😂🤷🏻

Having owned a Chim450 and a Tuscan S having ABS would have prevented many a pair of soiled underpants.. S1 Elise the same later provided in th S2 but I expect in TVRs case it was more to do with cost saving than pure driving.

I loved my Noble for the purity and lack of assistance, but having lots of average drivers in hedges and upside down while learning driving dynamics isn't ideal. A button to remove the assistance on the track or for experienced drivers is the best of both worlds.

@@andrazstrmcnik2331 I've done that with TC off, relaxed driving, accelerating like I always do and hit an unexpectedly slippery patch of tarmac and got spit into a wall. Lesson learned you have to stay focused driving a rwd car. I'd slid the car about on my own terms before but I lost my reaction time when I wasn't expecting it.

I spoke to Ted a while before he launched Pistonheads (Petrolheads at that time) and he tried to explain the idea of an internet chat group, but I only really got involved later. We, TVR owners, were definitely not all complaining about the cars though, there was a lot more to it than that and a lot of love and respect for the marque, as well as a wealth of knowledge on running and fettling. Never drove a Sagaris, but it's slightly smaller sibling the T350 was magic. Lovely engine.

Pistonheads originally was a forum for mainly Lotus and TVR enthusiasts. It started to resemble a real website in 1999. I made my first contribution in January of 2000, and my last in 2008. @@automotiveaffairsshorts I had an interview at CC in 2021 with David Edmonston. David Edmonston sold PH to Haymarket Media Group in 07 for (many) millions. Edmonston origially built PH at his apartment after his day job hours. It was first a simple forum, then came news articles, then came car sales. It was a simple hobby and soon ballooned out of all proportions and Edmonston took a gamble to quit his 9-5 and do PH full time. This was when PH was just a forum, way before Advertising, Media, Car Sales etc were added. I got the impression that when Haymarket made the offer to buy PH, David struggled to let go of his baby but the offer was To Good to pass. Then, when Edward Lovett was dreaming up Collecting Cars in 2018/2019 he needed someone to build the site, algorithms and everything else. Edward teamed up with David who did just that. CC are a great team and David was a sorted normal chap, grounded passionate and knowledgeable. I didn't get the job tho.

@@themrmarkprior thank you for the insight, David didn’t stay in contact with me after selling PH to Haymarket. I met up with David on a few occasions, when I would visit UK from Canada. We went to the unveiling of the Aston Martin DBR9 race car - event was held at the AM HQ in Gaydon - in his TVR Chimera (which refused to start after the event, because he forgot to turn the headlights off and hence the battery drained). Next time I saw him, he had upgraded to a TVR Cerbera. Good to hear he got millions for his baby, and that now he’s behind the team at CC - which is a great organization! Thanks again, Mark, for all the information, I really appreciate it.

Everything about this car makes perfect sense. Down to the missing driver aids and airbags. And that exhaust is amazing. And the doorhandle solution is enviably clever. Proper engineering solution. As for the reliability issues of TVR, no other brand is better. Every manufacturer who dares to play with performance, and most of the basic cars as well, brake down eventually. When you try to push them without fully understanding what you are doing, all of them blow up. TVR is a mad scientist car. If you treat it well, it gives back good performance. If you mistreat it, it bites back. That's called character, and you can't get that in a Ford.

These cars are special, and their importance within the story of British manufacturing and design is somewhat overlooked at the moment in my opinion. For a car that was penned 20yrs ago, it still looks bloody fantastic, fresh, aggressive and what a noise they make. Yes, it’ll throw the odd wobbly, sensors and dash glitches when it’s cold and damp, and if you buy one you should always have a ‘running fund’ on top of the purchase price, but is that any different to any other 18yr old, 180mph car? Generally anything you do spend on them adds to their saleability and resale value, which is more than can be said for some marques. They only made around 180 of them, and a fair few of those are no longer with us, having been exported or having taken a trip into a hedge. Once these cars hit 25yrs old, they’ll be off to the USA and Australia, so get one while you can…..

This was a great review and that Sagaris is a great car. I will say that the Tuscan Mk II was similarly good in quality compared to past TVRs as it was built around the same time as the Sagaris, the controls are tight, compliant throttle, the engine, good ride etc. However, the key point I learned a little while ago, that the presenter made regarding any TVR was that generally speaking, the quality and reliability of a TVR is down to how well it has been looked after!

I love quirky and different from all else. Its the experience of the drive that wakes you up and pumps your blood. Cookie cutters don't do this and TVR has it in spades. Also agree with no airbags. I don't want to be knocked out of the way and off the steering wheel when trying to negotiate the car after an accident. Also would like to breathe the air which is impossible with air bag gasses and powder floating around the cabin that makes people bail out of the car door when finally stopped.

Perhaps it’s the lack of modern electronics cluttering up the aura of a proper drivers car - aggressive, slightly wacky looks, a great soundtrack & an interior that doesn’t look dated almost 20 years later make it an attractive proposition if you have the money & want something a bit different.

It sounds, that's a very interesting car... I never heard of ❣️😃 I know that TVR is a small britisch Carmaker and thought, they were bankrupt 🤔 I saw a TVR Touscan a half year away here in Berlin 🇩🇪 It sounds awesome...loud and brutal 😅 But in the over 40 years, I saw in Berlin maybe 5 time's a TVR on the streets... really rare ❕ I would love to drive one some days 😍 It's the type of car I love. No ABS, ESP, and all the other "drivers help" things. I want drive the car... not the computer from the car ‼️😂

to be fair, airbags can cause more damage than they prevent... sometimes rudimentary traction control like the mk5 fiesta st has is dangerous as you enter a t-junction and all your power is taken away as cars are approaching as for ABS, some old systems could be made in a way that it removes all brake pressure in a racing scenario so he wasn't lying, but he also wasn't truthing lol

Nice video great car, but trying to highlight about being well built that it's a 94k mile engine, but adding it's had a couple of refreshes, doesn't really hold up does it? Also, why Sagaris so much more (more than double in some cases) expensive than a Tuscan or T350?

I have, and I will always love a TVR. Great styling, loud engines, bonkers interiors and NFG towards driver aids. This is why it's a sniff below 1100kg. Remember the Speed 12? looked like the fucking Batmobile! God, I miss them...

This is absolutely a car designed for the sake of driving it and I love that. I would kill to have one of these. But £60k for an 18 year old 90k mile example… it’s a little out of budget

You can get a t350 for half the price and get 99% of the experience
@MilesHardy
@MilesHardy Год назад
@@LawrenceTimme I'm afraid that's a common misconception. Although a T350 is good, a Sag is on another level when hustling. I would still love to have another TVR right now, thankfully we have 6 in the garage right now! @HPC Classics :)

£60k will seem cheap in 5 years. Late TVR prices have been claiming rapidly for the last few years. Americans love them and when they're 25 years old the restrictions for US imports diminish. Nab one while you can, if you can.

Sagaris is gorgeous and unique. Too many safe bland cars with no personality these days. People not convinced, you're just wearing rose tints, how can a car have personality? Let me introduce you to the TVR Sagaris.

Yeah, I had one around 18 years ago Drove it for 4 weeks someone crashed into me pulling out of a junction and wrote it off as it's built out of tissue paper, even thou it's " well built " btw the Hyundai Coupe that pulled out was mostly fine. It was like a rock hitting a milk bottle. That's the only car I sat and smiled at for hours when I bought it :(. Oh well.
