I use the F38 on everything. I ended up with the Smallrig Black Mamba for my S5ii and use an f38 plate on the cage so i can jump from tripod to RS2 to backpack strap with ease!
@@JonackFilm agree never heard of them until an "influencer' mentioned them on here. When I see it pushed on mediocretube I steer clear since it is many times just junk that gave kickbacks.
@djcrash77 would you be able to put an F38 plate on the Black Mamba's left side to take vertical portrait shots on a F38 tripod? Also would the Arca Swiss built on the Mamba work on PD clip?
Hey Josh, sorry, but I have to call you out on your comment about the weight distribution of the cages: Firstly, the tipping forward is completely dependent on the weight of the lens attached; heavy lenses like 70-200s or 24-70 F2.8s are always going to tip forward, as they move the centre of mass away from the cage, whereas the compact Lumix primes are light enough that they don't do this. It's a pet peeve of mine too, I like my cameras to look sexy on the shelf and not tip, but in reality it's a result of the lens, not the cage. Secondly, the comment about not adding undue stress on the lens mount, well, in actual fact, the lens mount is under less stress when the lens is resting on the table, as this is supporting some of the weight; by using a cage that doesn't tip forward, you're actually subjecting your mount to the full weight of the lens, sorry, but physics... Nice review of the cage overall though. I looked at many cages before building out my S5 ii rigs and am happy enough with the Smallrig ecosystem, particularly loving their compact v-mount battery plate although I must say the Falcam built quality seems to have the edge, and the colour is pretty nice too.
Have you used the SIrui cage, It is an absolute best. 3 ari whole, and a tone of 1/4 threads super sturdy and for the price like half of the competition. I also felt like he was paid by Falcom.
Yes! Exactly what I was looking for. I thought you had missed this one for second in the beginning of the video, so I was super happy to see you review it because it's been my number one contender.
Yes! The F38 / F22 system just changes the whole shooting experience, it was painful to wait for the F22 cage fr the S5ii after I got it in February, but it’s just soooooo nice. I love that the handle side of the cage is optional/removable
Great vid as always Josh! We're considering trying the Falcam system for our Sony A7SIII - it does look super good and LOVE the range of quick release options.
I have large hands and have found the s5II lacking in the grip. Does the F22 cage help with this? Thanks for the videos as they are very well done. Keep it up.
I got the blackmamba cage. It's amazing, however I think this falcam is a good addition. I wanted to try the F38 but I wish it seamlessly blended with the Arca Swiss accessories I have. Including the Ronin.
The f38 is one way compatible with Arca Swiss. You can mount any f38 camera plate to an arca swiss base, but you can not mount an arca Swiss camera plate to an f38 quick release base. So for example if you were to put the f38 plates on all your cameras but you have already invested in an arca Swiss tripod, you can still use those f38 plates with the tripods arca Swiss base without issue. And the f38 quick release base also has an arca Swiss plate built in, so you can convert any arca Swiss base into a f38 quick release. So there is no downside to switching all your cameras to the f38 plate.
Thank you for the review! I'm currently looking for a cage for my S5ii. So good this cage makes stops the camera from falling over when standing. Also the DJI Ronin adapter sounds great! However I am missing a side handle with a record button as well as a clamp for USB-C and HDMI cables. You're not missing any of both?
Hi Josh. I notice you use the tascam DR60 MKii . I also have this item. Would you be able to do a quick video about it how to fully use it. What sittings you use. Your the only content creator who seems to use it. Its such a good device yet very few seems to have it
Nice video. A question for which I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere so far. Does the cage in any way restrict the freedom of movement of the screen? Can it be folded to the side while still being able to tilt up and down?
Where do you get one of those lens shields that you were using on this rig? I own an S5 that I bought last year with a cage that sits flat which I think is great. I've recently bought a second camera thr s5iix and paired it with a Neewer frame. I'm not as impressed by this frame, it tips over like the one shown. Already looking at replacing it.
The functionality seems great but I don't like the design and color. For this all in black camera I went with the 8Sinn cage. It's black and doesn't have a white logo on the front.
Almost got this cage myself. Ended up getting the smallrig (non blackmamba version) for the extra coldshoe mounting point on the top right side. Any chance you'll do a review for the kondor blue ssd handle?
Interesting! I’ve been eyeing this kit for a bit. Pretty turned off by the proprietary nato system… everything I own currently is on the normal nato rail system and I’d have to literally change everything to fit this system
Hi Josh, do you know how to set shutter button to not do video? That sht so sensitive and at half press starting internal recording, so frustrating compared to other S series. Is it possibly to block shutter button?
Interesting, I wish the industry could discontinue the current 1/4" screw system and use something like this instead (including on the camera itself). The screws feel unsafe and are annoying to attach and remove. I think the Black Mamba looks better than this one but I see you point about standing by itself and the quick mounts.
i had the black mamba attached to a Ulanzi plate and then locked into PD Capture on my belt. I was walking around and it loosend and the threads in the Black Mamba tore out, making my camera drop to the gound lens first. I told SMallrig by showing them photos of the threads and they sent me a new cage. Going forward i would not trust a constant movement vertical hang. the one screw system is stupid and i dont fully trust it
Unlike the Smallrig cage, this one doesn't work with the handle and XLR-1, a deal breaker for me. And I'm pretty sure my 24-70, 70-300, and definitely my 150-600 will still tip forward with this cage.
I like your Videos but i find it very sad that almost all camera channels are nothing more than buying guides. No one does tutorials anymore, no one shows the business side of photo and videographers and no one does anything with their cameras to show what they can do. Its all about buy this, you need this bla bla.
Video is great, as always. Just one small thing: I'm someone with migrane and your s-sounds (very high frequency) are extremely harsh. Kinda whistly and it would be much appreciated if some sort of de-esser could be used. 😀
I ordered the falcam cage almost a month ago and it still hasn't shown up. Stuck in customs. They really need to get their shipping figured out. Got all the handles with no way to use them.
No :) They sent the product out to me for testing, but no money changed hands and they didn't see the video before it went live. My channel is just a good fit for this product :)
