I fully expect Laura to have made her own crutches at the end of the 4 weeks that are strictly better in any way than the existing ones.

Me too. I am just worried about the original ones. Because normally in Germany you give them back, when you are healed. (It is more financially efficient for the insurance.)

I don't know if she will see this, but one thing a friend did with a cane. He added a magnet (those tiny super strong ones!) to a strap (similar to the one she added). It is strong enough to pick up a ring of keys !

Yeah!!!! That's a great challenge for the next 4 weeks! Find 2 o 3 things that could be improved of the crutches, and make them better!! From the top of my head I'm thinking, springs (suspention), magnets, pistons (to regulate hight like an office chair), or some cool function for the grips, trigger something, i don't know! Hajajaja what do you think?

Everybody who uses crutches also uses them to push buttons, close doors, etc. without having to stand up and hop over to the thing. ... It would be pretty easy to add an extendible grabby-claw to the end of the crutches that retracts when you are walking so it doesn't get damaged. Would be the best improvement made to crutches since the invention of the comfort-grip.

As someone who has had to use crutches for a couple different injuries, I highly recommend a good front bag to put things in while walking around. Backpacks are great for hauling lots of things around for longer times, but for having access to things quickly, an apron or front bag with pockets is wonderful. Also leg holsters, and use a bungee around the traditional forked crutches to act as a drink holder. Also, feel better soon

My problem with using crutches was that my hands go so sore from carrying my weight. I guess you get used to it after a while but after a few days it became unbearable for me and I just hopped on my one good leg. Exhausting, but less trouble 😣

As someone who uses a cane for walking. Shoe Goo or Goop is really good at resurfacing the rubber tips of canes and crutches if you need a lower wearing tip. I also use grippers for picking things off the floor, so maybe you can make wooden crutches with pick up grippers so you can walk and pick up stuff.

Get well soon Laura, the lime plaster/mortar also allows the wood frame to "breathe" which significantly reduces the risk of rot. Lots of old houses in the UK at one time had cement rendering applied to the outside when the old lime based render fell off due to age, this caused the frames to rot, these days when they repair these old houses they have gone back to using lime based materials, sometimes the old ways were really the best ones.
