21:00 I'm glad I watched this. When i was in my 30s, I tried a seriously strict keto diet whilst also training to run a half-marathon. This produced the craziest craving I've ever experienced. After 2 weeks of nearly no sugar and 20km runs, twice a week: I thought to myself "I feel weird. I'll eat one jelly baby." This turned into an unconscious demolition of an entrie tin of jelly babies, in one sitting. The quantity isn't what shocked me. it was the unconscious decision to eat the whole tin when I consciously wanted to just eat one. Literally don't even remember eating them all. The tin was full, then mysteriously empty.

If you are running that much, protein is absolutely not the #1 thing you should be eating. You were missing carbs BAAAD. That is why the sugar hit so hard. You were desperately short on carbs. Keto is terrible for runners due to the low carb nature of it. You need a balance between protein for recovery and carbs for energy. Otherwise your body is just going to eat your muscle mass.

My problem with hunger is that the symptoms of hunger are often separated from the impulse to eat. For example, feeling light-headed and stomach rumbles doesn't bother me, but there'll be times when my stomach feels full, but I still have the urge to eat. My shit is broken. I guess it makes sense now though. Eat as much as you can when you can instinct.
@Akatsuu

I get this too. Dieting long term for me is learning to dissociate my eating from my hunger. If I tell myself "Yeah I'm hungry but I'm scheduled to eat XYZ filling meal in 1.5 hours" then it gets a lot easier to bare, chug a big glass of water and make myself busy and the hunger generally goes away for an hour or so. All my meals are at scheduled times and roughly scheduled macros/calories so I never listen to my hunger and just eat when planned, and doing that for a few weeks tends to reduce my feeling of hunger because I never listen to it.

I get this too, have all my life. I have ADHD and the dopamine hit I get from food is a much more powerful drive for me to eat than hunger every could be. People with ADHD are more likely to struggle with addictive behaviour, risk-taking, impulsivity etc for the same reason - if your brain is chronically starved of dopamine like in ADHD, you are more prone to seek it out via external sources. Medication helped me a lot, but learning to recognise dopamine-related cravings as different to being hungry, and teaching myself how to distract myself or boost my dopamine through other means (listening to my favourite song, doing 30 seconds of intense cardio, caffeine if I've not had any yet, or even watching a few RU-vid videos all help!) I don't know if this would help you even if you don't have ADHD, but it really helped me a lot! My only bad time now is in the evening when my meds wear off and my ability to keep myself distracted or raise my dopamine is less than during the day.

Great video. I only learned it's ok to be hungry a few weeks ago and embracing the hunger has helped me do much better the last few weeks. Most diets tell you that you're doing something wrong if you ever feel hungry and then you feel ashamed. Especially when the hungriest you ever feel is right after eating a full healthy meal. That really hits by surprise and always used to lead me to binge. Now I'm just ready for it and deal with it most days.

I find my cravings dissipate the further I go into a diet until I get very lean. I suspect my cravings in the off season are driven by “dopamine craving” where I’m consuming highly enjoyable foods to hit my caloric targets. The early stages of a diet, I feel like I’m having a withdrawal where I’ve lost that easy access to pleasure. Much like quitting nicotine, touching my mini leg, video games etc. Deep into a diet or prep, I’m sure the cravings are purely hunger related!

6 months is waaaay long. You're super diet fatigued. Max time you can cut without causing your body to freak out is 10-12 weeks. I would come back up to maintenance for a couple weeks, and then go into a mild 10% surplus for a month or two. Your body has a lot of metabolic damage that it needs to undo. I would do not go below maintenance for at least 6-8 months. Dr Mike has answered a few Q&As about people who dieted too long and that was his advice. Also, when you do come back up to maintenance, you're probably going to jump at least 5 lb in just water weight so don't worry about the waeight you gain in the first two weeks of maintenance, you haven't gained any tissue.
@tristinyaeger9222
@tristinyaeger9222 9 месяцев назад
When Dr. Mike talks to people who are over dieted. He recommends coming straight back up to maintenance without slowing scaling up to minimize the damage that's being done. What percentage of body weight is 46 lb? Anything more than 10% lost in a single cut can cause a bunch of negative downstream effects.

One thing that worked for me before I failed on the maintenance part of things, is to aim for a goal weight range. For example, my current goal is to go from 225-230 and get down to 205-210 before I do a big maintenance phase. Then after that my goals will be 190-195, then 185-190

That's a really smart way of doing it, because I've read that to reset your body's natural "set point" where its homeostasis is trying to keep you takes 6 months to even a year to change. It's a big reason for why studies show that most people never successfully lose more than 10% of their body weight long term, because they break that plateau but can't keep it off for long enough for their body to relearn that it is normal.

I feel like a good follow up video could be “designing a FIRST fat loss program.” I notice you mentioned in other videos that it’s easier to get lean once you’ve already successfully gotten significantly leaner in the past. Seems like that means the first fat loss phase is the most difficult to adhere to then.

@@DolphR good point, it makes intuitive sense that after a certain level of leanness fat loss becomes much more difficult. I have implemented your training methodology for hypertrophy focused workouts the last 3 weeks and I am now in the 30 days grace period of using the RP app. Just want to say, I can't speak for the gains yet, but holy fuck the pumps man, I haven't had as good a mind muscle connection with my compounds EVER which feels awesome, and every session I'm juuuuuuust perfectly recovered (so far) It's early days but I am 99% sure you're getting the $250 for a year out of me. Thanks for everything you put out - Brandon

Cutting Pancakes 70 grams Whey 50 grams Casein 3 Large eggs 1-2c water to thin the batter 650 cals 113g protein 8g cars 21g fat Add PB Fit or Cinnamon to the batter to change flavor or fruits/syrup to add more carbs You get 1-2 small meals or a giant pancake, stays moist even if refrigerated. I'm open to additional suggestions, and of course you can double up the recipe for a cheat day that's not a cheat. Cottage Cheese Cutting Pudding 1 24 oz Fat Free Cottage cheese container 1/4 pack of Sugar Free pudding(Banana Creme or Cheesecake) 500 cals, 40g Carb, 78g Protein, 0 Fat You can either blend it or mix in the container, add water, almond milk, or skim, to get the consistency you prefer. Can sub greek yogurt for cottage cheese in these recipes and get a similar result. But it doubles the price.

Can your body use that much protein in one meal? I was under the impression that anything more than 40-60g in a meal just gets pooped out, and therefore it's more ideal to get your protein spread evenly through the day. But I could be wrong. That said even if you're not using it all I imagine it would be a very satiating meal.

I've been cutting for like a year and have no cravings. It's because I cut like 200 calories a day and eat more sometimes too. I'm in no rush. I'm going to eat health for the rest of my life. The only reason to cut more than the bare minimum is if 1. you are a professional athlete and have a time constraint 2. The doctor told you that you are dying due to obesity. Crash diets are unsustainable. You need to eat healthy for the rest of your life. You need a schedule. Healthy eating is clustered with good exercises and sleep. Discipline is contagious. I have no cravings. There are 4 principle's I've distilled to build a schedule. I truly believe anyone can change their life for good.

Weight maintenance became easy since I switched to a whole food, plant based diet. The key is eating high-fiber food which is very filling. I stuff my face all day long but because it is low in calorie density, I don't get fat and I feel full and satisfied. I cook and make tasty dishes and that's the way for me! I lost my excess weight over 20 years ago but only on WFPB did it become easy to maintain.

As a biologist I really appreciate your perspectives that discuss the evolutionary underpinnings of our physiology and behavior. There is outrageous gap between many human related fields (medicine, fitness) and evolutionary theory, which has always shocked me.

Honestly, the maintenance phase is harder for me to maintain than the loss phase. I'm into week 3 right now of fat loss, and feel pretty okay. But by week 12 I am going to want to burn the world to the ground.

My current nutrition plan: breakfast: overnight oats & coffee in a 1qt mason jar (protein b/t breakfast and lunch) lunch: 50/50 spinach & lettuce salad with assorted (different color) carrots, strawberries & blueberries in a 1qt mason jar (more protein a couple hours before dinner) dinner: whatever I want, as long as it’s not fried in oil or full of sugar The calorie & portion control between breakfast and lunch makes a huge difference, and when I get home I go to the gym and then walk for a few miles for cardio (try to go daily but sometimes I have a lot of work to do). The cut’s been going pretty well. Thanks for all your advice, Dr. Mike!

I definitely had the misconception that you could diet "without hunger" because I heard "diets don't work only lifestyle changes" so I thought that meant I should be able to eat at my desired weight's caloric intake without being hungry. It's silly now that I look back on it, but I really did think I was doing something wrong!

I think something that wasn’t covered in this video but is also a reason why most people including myself fail is the synergistic effect of cravings and social pressures of fitting in. No one wants to be the guy or girl at a party or restaurant who isn’t eating or drinking with friends because of the diet you’re on. No one wants to be the one making on the go macro calculations in MyFitnessPal around everyone. It makes you seem weird. Also, food is so engraved in our culture that it presents itself in almost every aspect of our waking lives. On a spectrum from the donuts in the break room the boss bought everyone to every celebration known to man including birthdays, holidays, weddings, and even celebrations of life (funerals). You pair this with hunger cravings and you are almost bound to fail unless you have great will power. Then, as Dr. Mike said, maintaining is sometimes the hardest part. When the weight loss motivation leaves, you are almost certain to regain the weight because you go back to living your normal life.

Love your approach to this Mike, it is both funny and informative. I am on week 11 on my 6 weight loosing phase in 2 years and 8 months since i got on TRT and changed my life back to bodybuilding mode again. Gone from a megafat sack of shit at 423 pounds to 282 at 17% BF and at the same time gained back a lot of my mass from yesteryears. So in 3 weeks it is back to maintnance for 4 months and then it is the last push to 12%.🥩🦍💪 Thank you for all your tips over this period man, been worth a lot✊

one thing that I have noticed is that the "must eat" feeling is so strong not just because it's a feeling of wanting to eat, but it's more like it's a feeling of "I must eat or else I will die". there is a strong "I will die if I don't eat" feeling which is what makes it so hard to resist. I think this feeling is now incompatible with modern society where our actual danger of dying from starvation is miniscule.

Wonderful, super informative video as always, Dr. Mike! One small point: there's growing research that more and more species are capable of delayed gratification and forward planning with regard to food storage and future scarcity, so we may come to find that we're not ALL that different from some other species as we once thought.
