Why is it that British rappers have never managed to break the American market? Is it our accent or do Americans just think we're a bit of a joke? Let's break it down - Johno 📹

@Aaron vandenberg I think the biggest mistake here is thinking drill rap has anything to do with hip hop. It’s almost like separate genre to me. For us golden era US hip hop fans, drill is a lot like mumble rap. It’s just not that good. The drug tales/violence glorifying the criminal aspects of our world is played out to a lot of us older cats. We’ve heard it done way better in the 90’s, by artists who could actually flow and rap. Most rap from the us and uk is just a weak version of what older heads grew up with. I love a good uk Mc. You have a ton of them, I just don’t feel drill rap at all

I think the biggest point is just American culture in general, they barely pay attention on a wide scale to any culture outside of their own, they are in a bubble thinking America takes up 90% of the worlds land mass. So it would be hard for them to be open to anything outside of America, it’s not really about our music they just really self obsessed country, a lot of Americans never even been outside of America.

I'm not the biggest Drill fan (not for its lack of talent in terms of rhyme and lyricism but for its lack of themactic variety), but admittedly some of the British Artists are good; they have a uniqueness to them and they're loyal to their own scene. I'm Irish and we have our own scene developing over here. Check out INK (Bad Intentions is what hooked me in) if you haven't heard of him - very talented lyricist and most importantly, he embraces the Dublin accent, whereas (without naming names) you have a number of utter tools who mimic the London accent and it's just RIDICULOUS. I've heard it said several times about how some Americans didnt know there were 'black british people'. How much of a bubble can you exist in...they must must get one hell of a culture shock when they hit Europe or even just leave the US. Other countries have developed/are developing their own genres that sound nothing like the 'American sound(s)' and the days where people look to the US are and have in some cases faded away or never existed at all.

I think it goes alot deeper than this. As an American that grew up predominantly poor from ghetto areas. Rap is a rare powerful phenomenon. America is a melting pot with stolen cultures. Rap was created by a subculture within our country. That begun to spread to all American cultures creating new diverse forms. It was so ground breaking and representational of the dirty in your face danger and pain one could experience growing up in the streets of American cities. The life the violence and the crime is different here as well as the system that upholds it. This was the first form of music that truly resonated and depicted the harsh existence some people had to live through. It should also be stated that Americans as everyone knows are very prideful. This is a musical culture created within (compared to other nations) relatively still young Nation. Rap itself is only around 35 years old. The OGs that made rap are still alive. It's not so much that Americans don't think UK rappers don't have talent. It's just that we really don't care about rap from the UK. Lastly Drill rap in America is actually one of the least respected formats of rap as it takes less skill and production and can be easily massed produced such as emo rap. So it just so happens that the UK has established Drill rap as the largest rap scene in the UK. While in America it is not as commercially respected as other genres of rap. It is still relatively new. P.S. most Americans listen to rap to connect with the harsh dirty expression of people's experiences living within the same environment. Some guy with a silly accent mimicking gangsta Drill rap and referring to a shotgun as a Bumpy does not make us Americans take any UK rapper seriously. (Drill rap in America specifically NYC is associated with REAL DEADLY gang violence people get shot to death on the daily)

US'er here. I see some comments abt the US being self-obsessed. My country has artists that truly come from hoods that you wouldn't believe and from circumstances on 3rd world country levels. You can't expect someone from that walk of life to be this worldly individual who listens to all music....Also when it comes to non-rap you guys get lots of play here obv. As for the music market here, yes, it's clout driven. But we also have a huge population so a lot of times an artist can survive off a fanbase from just their state. And they may only go outside of their state to collab or something if the clout is calling. But clout=views/.clicks/followers/plays which equals money. And if you don't have money then what are you going to do? Clout chase. That being said, there are people here who listen to you guys. Many of us who don't hate at all. You'd also be surprised how many of us DON'T care about your accent. We heard for all that GoT that we were obsessed with here lol but for real. I was playing uk drill at my place in Jersey and my boys didn't mind at all. I had on Top Boy and my guys f w/it execept for one dude...he tried to clowned the accent and we clown tf outta of him. So again it's not NEARLY as bad as sometimes I see others UK'ers make it seem. The only difference is in the numbers but again that's not fully a "US" issue. BTS will get 300mil plays in 2wks yet Megan the Stallion WITH a Lil Durk feature gets 4mill in 2months TION WAYNE - 1.2mil in 2 days....So is it really that bad? Most of those plays aren't American but who cares? Those are good ass numbers. Plus tik tok and shit is allowing music to spread way more no matter where it's from! Lastly, you guys got it. New sounds and flows and best of all(imo) multi-language lyrics. That's the future and the US is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY behind. Your citizens come in a variety just like ours but you guys are more open. So you guys have mads rappers in different races and cultures and no one bats an eye. America is still ignorant to that. Hearing Igbo and Arabic and all kinds of stuff mixed with mostly English is something that America will never have. And because of that you guys will be more Global/influential musically. Even if you don't see it. P..S. Look at all the Us reactions to UK music. And also the "we don't understand the slang" argument is silly(because you can learn if you listen enough) but remember in NY/NJ tri-state we talk *slightly* more similarly to you guys(mad, back out, ooters, duppy etc) due to similar ethnic demographics and other reasons and when we go to other states IN OUR COUNTRY there can still be linguistic barriers. It's all pretty interesting. TLDR: You guys make great music and people are noticing more and more and you guys do good numbers and have elements in your stuff that will allow for a greater presence and longevity in the end imo P.P.S Drakes a bitch and culture vulture loser so.....He's gonna steal anything to stay relevant so he shouldn't be apart of the convo

If you think about it most people in the USA only know about the USA . The UK is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities so is CANADA we have more patients and have genuine interest in understanding eachothers culture and lingo where as the USA have a sense of proud ignorance. There is defo a language barrier even though we are both speaking English. The way the media choose to push stereotypes doesn’t help either, In my opinion big shaq mans not hot should have been promoted as a parody from a comedian not a rapper this is why Americans think everything is a joke until they actually connect with people in the UK. Think about it the same level of support that pushed mans not hot to cross over international should have been for legitimate UK artist but instead an agenda was pushed because it’s was basically a mockery of people that live in the council flat areas it’s like king mach making watermelon jokes it’s not funny but it appeals to a certain audience that’s why it’s pushed so much. I will say in the most recent years there has been somewhat of a shift now that the USA have access to UK blogs and see that it’s not crumpets and tea. I’ve spoken to some Americans that didn’t know black people lived in the UK which obviously tells you that they don’t really know much about what’s going on outside of there country.

It’s interesting Tinie wasn’t mentioned with his single “written in the stars” it went platinum in America. It peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard hot 100 charts (this is before the streaming era!!) It was used in Wrestlemania 27 as it’s theme song. It was used in MLB commercials and the New York Giants used it as their entrance song at Super Bowl XLVI. It was even used in Miss USA 2011. I think because Tinie is seen more as a pop rapper he isn’t included in conversations like this but I do think “written in the stars” should be mentioned at least for what it did. I think big anthems can crack america just like “Praise the Lord (Da shine)” by ASAP Rocky featuring Skepta did not that we should even really care to try to crack america!

But even now in 2021 in terms of rap there's still a huge lack of knowledge of our UK stuff from our American cousins lol. I see more and more on here l making videos of it the past year with lockdown though so their taking notice now. That's always a good thing.

I worked for a label. We looked into if the uk market was feasible for a specific dutch rapper. I can paraphrase a few thing what I remember. Been a few years since than.. but some takes were; Its not only that american fans dont know uk slang. Its that uk rappers dont know american slang. The lyrics are not cool enough if they dont know current slang. And even they do, its not authenthic. You have to be there for a prolonged time. For shows, interviews, networking, collabs, etc. The artist risks their local carreer for an international one. This also means they leave their current cashflow. (The label has an opinion on that too, lol) Its expensive to grow inorganic. Every feature/beat etc. needs to be paid for. Contract issues. Just to name a few things. I think its possible tho. Become a tiktok hit, be super mainstream or the live performance should be outstanding.
@RIDEMusicYT

Yeah all that makes a lot of sense tbf, thanks for the insight too. I do hope it's possible. I think too, in the age of streaming fans are less connected with artists, they'll listen to lots and be "fans" of only a few, so it's even hard to build a core fanbase overseas.

Our ghettos are vastly different. It’s not the lingo. In the states each area has their own slang, but it’s like anything else. If you like it you’ll find out about it. When you spit. Spit your truth about your life and your struggles. Cause if you spit doing the same style that many are doing here it looks like imitations. Just be true to yourself with your lyrical skills and make some beats brothers can bump in their cars. All you need to do is find that one thing that we all can relate too.

Grime is a much more authentic Black British sound than UK Drill. If you don't know what Grime is, it emerged in the early 2000s, it was a way for Black inner city kids living in London to express their anger and frustration (poverty, racism). The music was abrasive and it was different from anything we'd heard before. It emerged from Jamaican sound system 'clash' culture and Drum and Bass MCing and started on pirate radio. It was 100% British (well, London mainly). Sadly, it died out. Mainly because the British mainstream didn't give it the respect and attention it deserved. So if you want to hear something authentic, you should check out Grime- Skepta, JME, Wiley. Now, kids in London are copying Chicago Drill, music and lifestyle, even down to the same slang. Nothing about UK Drill is authentic to London. It's just kids copying America. Obviously we don't have as much access to guns, but knife crime is a real problem. So many kids getting stabbed to death or seriously injured just to fit into the 'Drill lifestyle'. Many of these kids are children of African immigrants and are having some kind of identity crisis. Chicago Drill emerged from something that was already there. Whereas UK Drill created this violent gang culture that never existed before (there were always a gang problem, but not to this level). Also, many of these Drill rappers don't even have 'rough' backgrounds. Example, Tion Wayne, a drill rapper, was doing an accounting degree lol.

Skepta figured the move. He's been attacking Africa differently, they're more welcoming and the market is bigger. If we can first completely take over the UK music scene and tap into more of our population that will help, we're doing great atm but then also understanding there's a huge market in Asia and Africa, we just have to be open to collaborating with the best over there. Everyone eats, everyone benefits. No disrespect whatsoever but any time I've interacted with Americans it's almost like they don't see anything else outside of the U.S. Europe, Asia and Africa are far more welcoming so why not focus there.

I’m American and I think the problem lies in that we perceive British accents as “proper” and that clashes with how we define hip hop culture. There is absolutely nothing proper about hip hop. It’s street and raw. I agree that there’s also the issue of different slang as well. I knew none of the words on your list. Most Americans would think it’s cool to hear a British rapper featured on an American artist’s track, but an entire project would be too much.

I'm American and love hip-hop. The main reason why is pretty simple man. A lot of fans are narrow minded and unwilling to change or accept something different. To me your missing out not expanding your horizons man. There is so much good hip-hop coming from the UK that if you aren't listening your insane. The second thing is hip-hop fans in the US are getting younger and starting to like continuously worse sounding music lol the mumble crap or guys like Lil Pump. A lot of the UK guys are genuine lyricists and fans who enjoy that are usually older.

I'm British and I can understand why Americans don't like UK rap. Sorry, but an English accent just does not suit rap. And I'm sure that Americans are annoyed at Brits copying their sound- why would they want to buy something that they originated? BUT I love Grime and I think the London accent suits it perfectly. I love the abrasive and interesting beats. Plus, Grime is uniquely British and has a history and culture that is really interesting.

I had a bash at rapping n posting uploads on here (taken most of them down now) so obviously I was on a much lower level than most. However, ironically, its was clear Americans enjoyed my music more than my fellow brits. Most my collabs were with Americans and most people who contacted me offering anything from advice to free beats were Americans. Its fair to say my main audience was American. I wasn't overly fussed as I knew my position (low level) so didn't think too much about it. But nowadays, I wonder if it's site like RU-vid that will ultimately breakdown the barrier. What I mean is, if I was American and the music industry popped up saying "this the best of british" I'd naturally be like, come on, let's hear it then n then compare them against my fellow American artists, your not gonna win them over. Whereas if as a brit, you don't go in with the "I'm the best brit, I'm here to impress" attitude/marketing strategy n you just simply say "hay I'm British, have a listen to this n let me know your thoughts" then (in my experience) their a lot more open to that and via interacting with them on that level, it's suddenly a lot easier to develop an American fan base. Oh n don't forget, amerixa is massive. You can make superstar money whilst not even being known in a neighbouring state, let alone nationally

Brits mostly listen to UK rap and US rap, French folks listen to French rap and US rap, Germans listen to German rap and US rap, Russians listen to Russian rap and US rap. Everyone thinks it's just them and america and they think of rap from all other countries the way Americans think of any rap that isn't from America or Canada. That's why American rap sells better. Europe needs to strengthen its scene and have more collaboration around the continent like USA does with Canada before we start dreaming that our little local national scenes will be able to match the scene of a continent sized country. That way, our scene can have similar sales to the American/Canadian scene. And people need to stop saying we already have slick Rick. He was made in NYC and probably wouldn't have done what he did if he had stayed in the UK.
