It’s also the insatiable curiosity, FOMO and the jackpot of finding something interesting or educational. I know I’m often wasting my time, not learning and being brain dead but you can’t really help it when the world is moving so fast. There’s so much news, so much i want to learn or know that sometimes it feels like filling every moment to be information dense is actually productive just to keep up with the world. This is why I often try to play things at 1.5x- 2x speed or watch when I eat. It’s because i consider it efficient when you can do 2 at one time. But it also means that we might be valuing peace, tranquility, quietness, doing nothing, reflecting or enjoying the small sentimental things a lot less until we are burnout with info, entertainment or inaction from constant consumerism before out brain decides it needs a break.
@Barbara_Banks_1

I agree. I’m seldom bored. Be it if I’m doing something productive, learning something new, or just at peace and unwinding at the end of the day … I don’t find life boring at all. There’s always something that has my attention… The challenge can be, to properly express myself and channel my energy in a positive direction.

For me it's shifted from "can't tolerate boredom" to "fear of missing out on all the new content constantly coming out" This could be youtube videos, movies, tv shows, games, music, etc.
@DavidStrife7

This is how I was until recently, when I caught myself in this loop and broke it. Back in the 00s, it was possible to basically take part in and/or buy every big new thing that came along. It's pretty much impossible now, even if your bank account is big enough. There's simply too much variety and volume. I think MGS2's ending speech from the A.I said it best, and Kojima nailed it on the head; humanity's biggest problem in this information future is not really the content itself, but the sheer volume of it. How do you even begin to sort through it and filter what's relevant to you? It's overwhelming at times. A digital trash heap that builds up in size exponentially, and your work is never done. I think it's uncomfortable for a lot of us, as we're used to end goals/conditions, but this is like an infinite game mindset and we're not really able to intuit those kinds of experiences very well perhaps? I guess the gamers who need to 100% everything are having the hardest time XD?

If anyone wants an immediate thing that they can do to combat this get into the habit of not taking your phone into the bathroom. It's a good first step because you're brain is obviously gonna fight it and want you to pick it up again but you're actively pooping so there are very few things it can say to convince you to listen to it. You'll notice your bathroom trips are suddenly a lot quicker and it'll be easier to start an actually productive task because you've already urge surfed (thanks Dr. K in a different video for that terminology) a little in the bathroom and it's not as strong of a craving. Once you start building up a bordem tolerance you'll notice that a lot of your technology habits are just that, habits, and you no longer actually enjoy doing them. One day I just paused the podcast I was listening to because I realized I didn't actually like it that much, I just listened to because that's what I trained myself to do. It felt so liberating that I was able to make that choice to stop so easily and that first time working in silence after so long was one of the happiest and most productive I've ever been. The power of bordem tolerance is not being able to handle when you have nothing to do, it's being able to recognize when you're not actually enjoying something and turn it off knowing that it's okay if you don't find something else to do right afterwards.

Reading the comment section while on shorts, watching videos while eating so I don’t even taste the food, listening to music while I ride a bicycle so I don’t even focus on the effort and exercise, podcasts while doing random stuff. I've literally started becoming self aware of my scrolling to find something to watch in order to START doing a task, and have started just throwing my phone down and accepting that some tasks can be done without CONSTANT STIMULATION. We're all junkies, and we all have gross behavior like that now. It makes me angry, cuz it's by design
@KVW110
@KVW110 Год назад
Also, if my mind doesn't have at least one day a week, or an hour or two a day where I don't focus on anything specific, my brain turns to mush. Too much stimulation, too much to do, too much to focus on, is dentrimental. I write down the important stuff I can't forget or need to do, otherwise, I let it wander aimlessly for a while.

The amount of stuff people want me to accomplish drives me nuts, or at least how much they expect me to use every second to do something "productive." When I was a kid, I'd sit for hours sometimes just watching outside, or contemplating life by myself. I always got in trouble for not doing something. Now work has me working nearly 12hr days, and I don't get full weekends, so I don't have time to do nothing because home will look like a bomb went off, schoolwork won't get finished, etc. I hate this overproductive mindset.

Huh. We might have different definitions of boredom. As I’m used to thinking about it, boredom isn’t quite ‘the state of feeling like I don’t have anything to do’-that’s idle time, and it’s a chance to think about some article I read this morning, or to people-watch, or whatever. On the other hand, what I’ve been calling boredom is a state where none of the things I potentially could do feel appealing, yet being idle feels aversive in itself. It’s a state of unsatisfiable restlessness. Is there a different word for that? Or is that what boredom actually is, and other people feel it more often or more sharply than I do?

Rather, I'd say they lack constructive thinking / can't think for themselves because the TV, parent, etc. does it for them. They can't entertain themselves. 😱 It's like the human zoo from Steven Universe.
