I don’t think he’s saying that decreasing calories won’t help you lose weight. I think he’s saying counting calories is a bandaid, for a problem that could be solved a better way. 100 calories of refined sugar is way worse than 100 calories of protein.
Thats technically what he is saying but he is expressing a huge dissapointment in calorie-counting and says to fire anyone using the term lol. So yea he couldve stated it better instead of chasing clicks or forcing his worldview.
@@xd-bt3xs well it’s kind of like using grams as a metric to diet, decreasing the weight would probably decrease body weight. Now if you go from only eating 2-3 pounds of meat to eating 1 pound of sugar then you’re probably not gonna lose weight. Even though it could be a useful metric it still isn’t a comprehensive metric that truly aids in getting fit/losing weight
@@thisguy6817 If you start eating better and train, these two things alone can have a massive impact on insulin. So is it really the insulin that should be the main focus or isnt it just all connected? People whos serious about losing weight should consider changing their lifestyle all along, not just simply go on a diet for 3 months and then go back to old habits thats when you jojo-diet.
I am an insuline resistance patient, lost 18kgs, agree that blood glucose management is the key, but I still need to be more or less aware of the calorie intake.
I can confirm this 100%. The only way that I’ve ever lost and maintained my weight loss while doing jack shit has been keeping insulin down. I eat a ton of fats and protein and can now go long hours and days with no food. Mind you I’ve counted calories! Done it all! Gained all and more! Not this time!
Insulin doesn't play that big of a role. I wouldn't go days w/o eating too often. That sounds like a really bad idea. Whether you're counting calories now or not you're still eating at maintenance. It wouldn't hurt you to cut that steak in half and have those calories in carbs instead. Nutrition is flexible like that.
@@Erick726 I’ve heard both sides. I’m putting things into practice and this is what works for me. 100% 🤷🏽♂️ and I don’t feel restricted at all. I feel insanely good.
My Dr and I had this very conversation and he also agreed with me that they put more sugar or sugar based ingredients in 98% of what we consume and sugar drives hunger pangs. Check Europe's ban on American food it will shock you!
There are some doctors that advocate for that idea. I mean I'm not saying they are completely wrong, but what he has described is only one parte of the equation. There are other variables that we might be looking at, for instance, calories, sleep, stress, and exercise just to name a few. His approach is too radical
I mean I watched it and what he says isnt wrong just that he couldve expressed himself better instead of having a huge dissapointment in calorie-counting. Its definitely a tool and the problem with dieting is that people start to eat better and track calories and when theyve lost the weight they go back to their old lifestyle and habits, THATS the reason behind jojo-dieting. Everyone whos serious about losing weight should consider changing their lifestyle all around and not having a temporarily diet but something you actually enjoy and withstand, thats the hardest part about it. Tracking calories will definitely help along the way so telling everyone to fire the person using the term is ridiculous.
This is a real scoop, getting Dr Lustig on. His work has been such a positive influence on me. Recommend checking out his conversations with Dr Mark Hyman.
This! Is so true! My wife and I as normal people who exercise and eat correctly came to this theory recently. Eat meat and veg and use sugars before long bouts of exercising to fuel the workout. Afterwards back to foods that don’t spike your insulin.
Except for the fact he's misleading everyone with false information. Everyone loves a con man. Whether it's Kenneth Copeland or Donald Trump. You want to know how you lose weight? Count your calories and be in a caloric deficit. Genetics, insulin resistance, and hormones play such a small role it's not worth talking about. Calories in/calories out. Eat less and move more. Period.
The fact 33% can't cook or probably don't know what they are eating is Astounding. 53 and 12 to 15 hr fast daily took me 18 months not to feel like my stomach was eating itself. Now 12 + hrs a 12 km hike and not even hungry . 5 day fast soon .. 20 hrs was my Max but again.. The benefits are Amazing . God Bless ❤
@ODDJOB1234 Bravo.. I found that the more protein and less carbs make you way less hungry . I eat pasta, for instance, and can fill myself to the ears ... then I wake up Starving !!!.... God Bless u got this !
5:37 "Get the insulin down". People (even in these comments) still push "Calories in, Calories out" or say 600 calories of pizza is equal to 600 calories of raw food - which never made sense to me. But this recommendation to reduce insulin makes perfect sense. It's not that reducing calories won't make you lose weight, the point is that calorie focus is too flawed. Instead, a focus on insulin is the correct and more effective approach to lose weight, or avoid weight gain.
The fructose story I had heard before was that it is converted directly into fat and so is only indirectly available as energy. This is the first I have heard about it blocking mitochondrial function. Robert Lustig is passionate about these concerns and very convincing, thanks for the helpful excerpt!😊
When eaten in moderation the fructose we eat is mostly converted to glucose in the small intestine and enters the blood stream as such. When we overwhelm our intestines ability to convert the fructose to glucose then fructose will be processed in the liver to either glucose or fat depending on what energy needs the body is currently facing. Fructose in excess is a problem but that is true for glucose, fat, salt and even water so sensible discussion are better than Lustigs attention grabbing fear mongering statement to draw attention to himself

I don't know. I use calorie restriction on my dogs, myself, and my horses when we need to lose weight. I will cut maybe 1/8th of a cup/scoop (which isn't much at all) of food out of their diet consistently each day, they lose weight. I will cut my food intake back each day, and I lose weight. It works every time regardless of what I eat. So I wouldn't demonize calorie restriction as a tool for weight loss. I do agree that sugar should be avoided as much as possible. Obviously, if you choose whole foods over sugary processed junk, you can eat more volume. Also, it is more satiating than garbage food.
What's the correct way to eat if I'm in poverty, and I have roughly 5$ a day to eat, if that? What should I eat on that budget, when refined carbohydrates are the least expensive thing, and vegetables and meat are the most expensive thing? What do I do?
I’ve lost 83 pounds since March 2023. Weight lifting, walking, ample water (3-4 quarts/day) and 6-8 hours of good sleep. However, I have plateaued. I need to lose 30-40 more depending on BF%. I look great, and am happy, but I’m still aiming higher. My severe calorie restrictions aren’t working anymore, hurting my gym time, and messing with my overall well being. Help needed.
Your body has got used to the severe calorie restrictions placed upon it, your metabolism is going into starvation mode and is holding on to whatever calories is stored with in your body and not burning them, you need to shock your metabolism again by upping your calories, severe restrictions will just cause you to gain more weight in the future,I urge you to make the bulk of your diet protein and fats, don’t be discouraged by the big amount of calories in these foods and meals your body uses these calories the way nature intended and these meals will keep you satiated and you won’t have hunger pangs,I still believe carbs have a place in a healthy diet so only eat carbs on your training days and even then only carbs that come from the ground such as sweet potato wild rice fruits from the berries family, leafy greens and you will find you feel full everyday and fat will start to come away but I urge you to lift weights aswell healthy eating and weights go hand in hand your body will transform if you put the work in

Fructose may be an issue, but calories are still important. Both ideas can be true. Bariatric surgery causes weight loss. Anorexia causes weight loss. Ozempic causes a loss of appetite, causing weight loss. Cutting calories causes weight loss. Avoiding carbs, while cutting calories, causes weight loss. There are no shortcuts around calories.
Well here is another but opposite extreme example: "vitamin D overdose" causes rapid weight loss despite of calories. According to my research we have two metabolic states I call them winter and summer mode. Unfortunatelly our average diet (including too much fructose) keep us in winter mode. If we followed how we ate during winter we would be more healtier and only gain fat under skin againts winter. Like Inuit do. But switching to summer mode is not an easy issue... It seems we have to manage copper status in fact. And it could explain why we lost ability to produce vitamin C...

@@misterben88it’s a hormonal and fat adapted thing. Not an energy thing. Do more damage trying to control your calories than by making sure your fats and protein are sufficient.
@@misterben88Not sure what you’re talking about. Meat contains calories. When you consume meat, you take in protein, but your body can use only so much protein at a time. And since your body can’t store protein, it converts protein you can’t use into fat. So, yes, if you eat 3,500 kilo calories of meat, you’ll gain weight, unless you are getting enough exercise.
This is not correct. A caloric deficit, regardless of the type of calorie, will work to reduce weight. This has been proven. However a caloric surplus from protein, will not result in weight gain. This has not been shown to be true.
Not true I'm proof to this.I went to get blood work done to see where everything was told in order to maintain weight I need to eat 1650cal a day...plus whatever 400-500 calories based off life style...i eat well over this,150g protein 180g fat 30g carbs a day,my blood work and hormone levels are perfect and i dont gain weight...if i go through a phase were i get lazy with cooking and i eat refined carbs even alittle over my BMR calories for the day I will swell up like a ballon and start gaining weight to match that of the calories surplus.
Fundamentally, if you consume less calories than your maintenance, you will lose weight. This of course goes in conjunction with eating healthier and more nutritious foods that are high volume, low calories and keep you satiated. Avoid calorie dense low volume foods that do not fill you up but significantly add to your caloric intake without realising. Track your food and macros, choose the healthier options and ease into a sustainable caloric defecit and you will lose weight. I started doing this in July weighing 104kg. Im now 76kg by doing all of the above. If you're consuming healthy but calorie dense foods i.e. potatos, rice, fruites and nuts and are going over your maintenance you will not lose weight... simple.

Yeah. People gain the weight back because they crash diet or get tok restrictive and it isn’t sustainable. Moderate calorie deficits, high protein, hit the gym. Do that consistently for like A YEAR and you will be shredded. Period.
Basically calorie dense foods such as processed foods are way way easier to over consume. If you are eating mostly unprocessed foods you will usually reach satiation much sooner and your net calorie intake would be shown to be less

I just did my groceries yesterday and I took a great deal of pleasure out of seeing the looks on peoples faces when they saw what I had in my cart. Everything I bought was on special or on sale. If you're insulin resistant due to high visceral fat, dropping calories won't put you in a calories deficit. Your body's metabolism crashes to match your intake. 1 gr of carbs = 4 calories 1 gr of proteins = 4 calories 1 gr of fat = 9 calories Simple math: 100 gr of sugar = 400 calories 100 gr of avocado = 900 calories. The question is: how on earth is 100 gr of sugar better than 100 gr of avocado? The answer is: calorie counting is BS!
But ppl who restrict refined carbs for long periods ALSO yo-yo back once they start eating junk again…and trust me for most ppl who got to the point of being severely overweight, the urge to eat junk never goes away mo matter how good eating clean might make them feel. so its just as hard for them to sustain a no refined carbs life as it is to maintain a balanced low calorie diet. The calorie is everything. You can't overcome thermodynamics. If you burn more than you eat you lose weight. Listen to bodybuilders and fighters, they understand how to lose weight.

No! Calories by themselves have nothing to do with losing or gaining weight. They are the same only if you are going to literally burn them. People only lose weight restricting calories because they eat less carbohydrates in the process. That means they lower their insulin spikes, like it has been explained in this video.
