Instead of going to luxurious stores, I like to go to luxurious spas, luxurious cafes and do luxurious activities that are non material, I like to stay at luxurious hotels, etc. That’s the way I like to do it. Maybe someone can relate!! It is still a challenge for me, but the more I do it the more confortable I feel❤

A coupe of years ago I wanted to buy an Hermes scarf as a present for myself for getting a promotion. First I looked online, but I wanted to see the colors in person and match my complexion. I walked into the store in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and asked to try on the scarves, and the shop assistant was very reluctant and looked at me like I don't belong there.. I wasn't even offered a coffee. This really turned me off the brand. So I walked out and spent my $$$ on local brands, which were not cheap either, but I was greeted with a big smile and a glass of sparkling.

@eucianelelis4228 Год назад
That’s not a reflection of Hermes. It’s a reflection of the Brazilian culture. I live in the US, but grew up in Brazil and worked for Cantão and Redley for many years when they were huge! First of all, people will treat you better there just because you are associated with the brand, even if you just work at a nice store . Easy to get an ego in that way, especially because you make friends with all the rich and influential people that shop there. So the sales people in Brazil that work in luxury stores do discriminate and there is a toxic culture going on for sure. I remember I was presented with a lookbook where my manager said I should look and act a certain way, and said I looked and acted “too suburban”. It messed with my head so much. Here, I go to Beverly Hills and people that work at luxury stores could care less if I seem like I have money or not, especially here in California where everyone dresses more casual, even the ultra rich. The consumers here do not make friends with the sales people in general. It’s like in and out, or if the sales person is such a phenomenal salesperson that they become the client’s brand concierge and some contact develop between them. Too bad you walked away from your scarf. Hope you can get another bonus and promotion and can go back to a better experience. 😊 Boa sorte!

Oi!

I live 400 miles away from the closet designer store. I recently was traveling and was able to go into several designer stores for the first time. I was surprised actually how I was treated. I was wearing my company plumbing hoodie! Yes, hoodie, I know how Anna loves hoodies. I had on jeans and no make up. My husband was with me and he was wearing his “I’m a plumber t shirt” . When we walked into Gucci , we were immediately greeted by this very nice young sales associate. She showed us a lot of things. I told her I had never been inside Gucci before. She gave us a tour of the store. As it started to get busier she helped other customers. She would come back and ask if we needed anything. I was looking at things while she was helping others. I found a bag I loved! I bought a 3,000.00 bag. I wasn’t sure how we were going to be treated because we just came from a plumbing convention and we looked like workers. My husband and I own a plumbing business. We don’t flaunt what we have. I was just happy that the sales associate was very nice and was helpful. She was not judging us based on how we were dressed. At least I don’t think she was. She was really good at her job. I text her when I want something shipped to me. She will be my sales associate for as long as she works for Gucci. She gained a loyal customer.

That is a great story. Whether you are a customer or an associate you (we) should never be anything but kind to our fellow woman/man. It always, always, always pays off. Sometimes you even live to see it pay off. But, it always does! I am grateful to every associate or sales person or whomever who took the time and made the effort to show me kindness. I am also grateful for those who do not because it reminds me of how to behave.

One thing I learned in the retail business. You never judge a book by its cover, meaning person that looks like they have money can be at times in debt for what they are wearing. Sometimes the one that looks like they don’t have anything could be millionaires! I have seen this! There was a man in the town that I lived. He lived in a train caboose that was his home . Dressed like an old train engineer. He was a multimillionaire. He owns all the trains they used for tours to see sightseeing in the area! Would think he was so poor but he was rich you never knew it!

I'm going to share a short story of mine. It's not about designer store, but I know many people who feel intimidated to go to expensive beauty salons/beauty clinics. So, I have tricotilomania and throughout my life most of the times I went to any beauty salon I didn't feel comfortable. There have been occasions where I felt badly treated, where the hair stylist said something bad to my face because they didn't understand my condition, on many occasions I have left beauty salons and cried. Many many times I went to a beauty salon that I have never been before and never came back because of the treatment I got. One day I decided to give it a shot and go to one of the expensive salons in my city, and I was surprised that I was so well treated, the hairdresser who took care of me understood my disorder and even told me that he had experience dealing with clients with the same condition. The first time I went there I was so happy that I found a place where I actually felt welcomed I cried out of joy that day, and I was feeling beautiful. Nowadays it's the only beauty salon that I go, I became a loyal client.

It actually depends on individual shop assistance. For example, my friend and I went for Ramadan buffet at one of the most luxurious hotels in Qatar. The hotel is newly opened, so after the meal we wanted to explore the property and see what other restaurants they have. In the first Japanese outlet, we asked the hostess if we could walk in to see the restaurant. She let us in while giving us a condescending look and just ignored us further. We felt like leaving immediately. Then we walked into their Italian restaurant saying we already had our dinner and just wanted to explore the other restaurants for the future. The hostess was so kind by offering us a tour of the restaurant, showed us inside and outdoor areas, told us about the menu. Guess where we will come back and what restaurant we will recommend to others!

I love this! I love to shop, and I've also worked retail. There's nothing wrong with politely telling a pushy worker "You know, thank you so much for offering help, but I'd rather look around on my own, and I'll come to you if have any questions." Sometimes you have to practice remembering that you, as the customer, are the entire reason this store exists, and you matter.

As a former general manager of a designer shoe store, I witnessed my sales associates gravitated more towards helping women that were friendly and kind. Sales associates get tired of “greeting” over time due to people ignoring them, some women even look directly at you and still ignore you. That was always hard on them and hard to keep up a greeting atmosphere. As far as judging someone, of course they will, especially if it’s commissioned based pay and they are green(new to sales) associates, but doesn’t mean it’s right. More tenured sales associates won’t judge based on appearances because they know, typically the wealthiest person in the room doesn’t show it!

What really helped me with my fear of luxury shops was luxury *department* stores. Each designer is allocated space on a floor with multiple other brands, therefore 'fleeing' the sales assistant when your self-confidence drops is a lot easier, since the layout of department stores is meant to allow for browsing multiple brands. It also feels a bit better cause you can spend a lot of time, or head to a café, bookstore or slightly more affortable area within the store and buy something within your budget, while still classy and befitting of your lifestyle. At the end of the day, you can just enjoy a coffee and window shop for inspiration without feeling like you took up too much of a sales assistant's time and energy.
@Jennifer_Lewis_Beach_Living
This is a good idea to get one’s feet wet with luxury shopping. You are correct that department stores are set up to allow for browsing, so it gives a person a chance to get used to the store.

I experienced a rude sales associate and a kind associate at a designer purse store. I wasn't planning on shopping that day and was dressed very casually. When I walked in the first sales person was very short with me. She steered me directly to the end of season items that were marked down. Then she walked away. I browsed the rest of the store and asked another sales associate for help with an item I wanted to purchase. She went to the back, brought out a freshly wrapped purse. Unwrapped it for me so I could inspect it. I told her I would love to buy it. Then the first associate came over and tried to act like she had been helping me all along. She even tried to step in front of the kind associate who was helping me. Trying to bully her out of the way. The manager was also there at the register and started paying attention to what was going on. The manager asked me directly who had helped me today. Of course I let her know how much the second associate helped and how wonderful she was. She then asked if she could see the first lady in the back. When I started to work in a store where we had a luxury section for elegant writing accessories my coworkers once told me a thing that I’ll never forget. She said that usually people who have money are used to wear suits and elegant clothes all the time at work so when they’re in their free time they usually don’t Walk around like that. They prefer to be in comfy clothes where’s other people think they need do get dressed up to go shopping for luxury to “fit” in the expectation of people that work there. You’ll never know so put all your effort in every customer even if they don’t buy anything. Just give them a high quality service so they might return and buy something based on your service. But I totally agree that nowadays we’re being “judged by our cover”. Now, over twenty years later when I enter luxury brand stores I can see if it’s a sale assistant with experience or not by the way he looks at customers. Funny how a few still underestimate people 😉

I can vouch for that. I was with a friend at les Champs Élysées in Paris and she wanted to buy a wallet at the Louis Vuitton store for her stepdaughter back in the States. We waited on a long line, finally granted entry, and were subsequently ignored by every salesperson at every counter. My husband, who speaks fluent French, tried to assist, but to no avail. We did look like Americans but we felt like such un-persons. In the meantime, we noticed a lot of people sitting around on comfy chairs playing on their cell phones and being served glass after glass of champagne. I guess those were the preferred customers. After a half hour of this, my friend gave up and said she would just go to an LV store back in the States and get the wallet there, but she thought it would've been a nice touch if she could have told her stepdaughter she had bought it in Paris.

I have no problem going into high-end stores. The problem that I have is with rude salespeople. I was in the Heathrow Hermes recently and the attitude radiating off of the sales staff was just plain vile. Yes, I am dressed for travel (jeans and sneakers, the horror) and with my assistant who obviously can't afford anything in that store. I can. And I was there looking for something in particular and ready to buy. They did not get my money.

Once I was in designer shop (I have to admit that I was dressed in very plain way) and I was looking for a scarf. As I was looking around I found out that not only staff but also security guard is discretly following me and watching me from afar. I was really angry. I felt like a criminal. So I went to the opposite shop, I thing it was Burberry, and I end up buying two scarves there (they were both nice I could not decide). I can understand in the first shop that they thought that I have not enough money because of the way I was dressed, but that security guard was too much. It felt humiliating.

from SA: 1. we MUST be attached to the client by the brand policy. we are not spying we are WAITING for you to ask us about anything you’re eyeing to 2. we are not expecting you to buy anything: most of us will be happy to share some information (about the brand, style etc’) and just have a nice chat 3. about 90% of “not buying” or “serial returners” are very very rich people. They are just looking for attention and company. 4. golden rule of every SA is - never judge the client! so, the best ones are NEVER judge to summarize: please come in! don’t be afraid! start friendly conversation first: question about the brand, current collection, SA’s favorite item etc Anna is right… it can elevate your perception of luxury

To be honest as a former sales assistant, i don't really pay attention to how you dressed but i can read your attitude in a second. I just know immediately if this person is gonna spend money or not BUT your insecurities oftentimes eat you up and appear in your attitude, so i read that as people want to just look around. So my only tips is just be confident, if you are confident enough to step in but not buy anything at the end, i'm still happy to assist you because i feel honoured to tell how amazing my products are, i can drawn to your energy without thinking this person gonna buy it or not

Im glad you are like that, but not everyone in the business are, most of my male friends work in designer stores and they all talk about how they comment with their colleagues on someone’s way of dressing or the items they carry as to see if they have money to spend or little or non, not always are they nice in their comments, bare in mind most of them can only acquire the cheaper items, even with their 30% discount . I dont feel intimidated at a luxury store but I definitely understand why some people are ❤

@@marisamorais3150 sorry to say it, and I'm not trying to sound harsh, but your friends sound very shallow and like they are self conscious about something like perhaps their status and intimidated by money and that's why they are trying too hard and appear to look down on others. Often when people ridicule others it is because it is something they strongly dislike about themselves. They seem to have the insecurity of not feeling like they actually fit in themselves, trying to be nouveau riche but without the funds. My ex-boyfriend is a very specialized doctor and one of the tops in his field. He has also been a professor in college in addition to having a private practice and he has written several peer reviewed and cited research papers. He does not dress the part outside of work and to look at him in his day to day world, you would never know he had all that going on. He comes from generational wealth and they do not make a show of it. He has clothes tailor made without designer labels showing. He will walk around with shoes so worn you'd think he dressed sloppy outside of work. He wears things to death but when he buys he makes sure it is top quality. He collects luxury vehicles and classic cars and his kids have luxury vehicles. He goes on nice vacations when he wants and he has some celebrity friends and some who are attorneys who represent them. He can be very generous but does not make a show of it and keeps it very low key. His daughter's walk in closet is stacked with Chanel shoes and she collects different designer clothes and handbags and accessories. She left quite a bit behind when she went off to college but not after she went shopping for her move. Apparently she feels she has to fit in with her friends and that's why she does so much to have a certain look. She is at the phase when she is very impressed with celebrities and likes to hang around her father and certain friends of his. When the doctor walks into a place he buys what he wants and gets out. If he is buying for someone he is waiting on he is patient but if your friends were to be dismissive of him they would be making a huge mistake. His spending habits are unpredictable. He can drop a couple hundred or so on a meal for two but then at the next stop he will decide he would rather order the Mercedes Benz parts and install them himself than pay for the labor.

I managed a luxury boutique for a while and tried to not judge anyone who came through the door. The reason being, that I had far seen too many "well dressed" people be cheap and waste the staffs' time, criticise and even return items after a weekend... and then other people wearing casual, unimpressive clothes actually have money and spend without any complaint and don't return items. I always trained my staff to avoid stalking customers, simply because nobody likes being stalked. Also, don't be rude, it says more about you than the customer. Don't judge, be friendly, answer questions and be cool.

I have found, that a great tip I use for any store, not necessarily just designer stores, is as I walk in and get approached with a sales associate asking if they can help I usually respond with a "Yes, thank you, I'll let you know if I do. I'm just gonna look around for a few minutes first." That way they know you are confident enough to approach them if you need any help. After about 10-15 minutes, I've usually figured out if something has caught my eye. That's the best time to ask about the item, if they have it in your size, different color, about using the change room, etc. But on the other hand if nothing caught my eye, I'll just give the sales associate a friendly smile, thank them and tell them to have a good day as I leave. Also, by greeting them when you enter with a cheerful smile and good eye contact, you aren't are suspicious looking, and less likely to be mistaken for a shoplifter.

Good manners, be polite, don't film anything, dress appropriately and have fun. If a sales associate follows you, just smile and keep on going. They are harmless. Head held high and be yourself! 😎 These are behaviors that one should have anyway, whether it's in Dior or the supermarket.

It’s funny how you made this video because I have gone through this experience a while back. I was in a Louis Vuitton store and I was wearing a casual shirt and wide pant jeans (but I was descent enough). I was so nervous because I can just feel like I was out of place, attire wise and income wise 😂 Thankfully, the sales assistants were nice and asked if I needed anything. I told them no and then I looked around the store. Another sales assistant asked me the same thing as I was eyeing on the sunglasses. I just asked them about the prices and she explained them to me. I thanked her before looking around the store more before leaving. They greeted me goodbye as I left. So ladies Anna is right about the imposter syndrome and it’s okay to feel like you’re out of place. But there are people who aren’t judgmental and are willing to help you.

Hi, former LV employee here! You were so right about the prejudgement Anna and funnily enough we were trained off the "Pretty Woman Stigma". However one thing that I shouldn't have to note, but sadly I ran into this issue more often than not. DO NOT go into a store like Louis Vuitton and ask what the cheapest item is. It's so impolite and normally that's how Client Advisors end up being quite rude. Another thing that shouldn't have to be said, however I'll mention it anyway is please do not go in, ask to see a bunch of pieces and take pictures with them unless you actually plan to buy. Most designer stores don't allow filing or photos anyway. Lastly the Client Advisors tend to hover, because they all work on commission. Due to that, they don't want to risk losing a sale. Hope this helps any elegant ladies who need it! Happy manifesting! xx

I have a friend who used to work for LV and she said that they were trained to sniff out people who are most likely to buy. Surprisingly, the demographics show that people who buy their products are people who wear simple clothing. Some luxury stores ignore these people when they are the ones who have the biggest purchasing power. Usually, these people are old rich money (at least here in my country). People who dress "to impress to show they are rich" are usually the ones who do not buy.

I took on a job as a luxury fashion sales associate because I love well-made clothes all my life and it was glamorized by a lot of media. As a naive college freshman, I decided that this would be my summer experience. My dad also told me it would give me good on the ground sales experience for when I took over his real estate business. Here’s the thing… I realized ANY service job sucks on so many levels that you are grateful to anyone who treats you as a human being. A lot of customers treated me like a robot and a function of my role, and every now and then you have one insult you to your face. You also are likely to have a boss who treats you as a function of your role. And you may have one colleague you hate. Lastly, when the job isn’t infuriating it is boring. Believe me, luxury sales associates are way too overwhelmed with what I have described to have the energy to be snobby towards clients. What we pay attention to is how you made us FEEL. We go to the back to gossip about the ones who treated us with disrespect. We talk fondly about the ones who made us feel GOOD. And then we remember to be them beyond the job, the next time we’re being served by others.

Sadly there's bad days when you end too tired that you discharge your frustration into a normal client. And I really dislike that to happen, cause everyone is human, me and the client. But there's clients that really enjoy making you feel bad.and then someones comes and treats you as an human, with just nice, quiet and understanding behaviour, and you just want to cry cause the contrast is intense.

The only attention I got was from the security guard who smiled and said hello. Other than that, I had to quite literally get someone to help me and check out my items, which they also messed up on. The assoaciate seemed frazzled, not sure if it was her first day or not, but totally felt like some department store associate. Actually, I think I got better service at the department store. They also charged me $100 extra, and I had to travel another hour back to get a refund. Once I went roller skating with my husband in Paris, and afterwards we stoped and entered to an elegant fabric store. The sellers looked at us very badly... I was very amused by this. One of them asked me what I was looking for. I answered, fabric for curtains. -How many meters would be needed? -I do not know. -For how many windows would you need the new curtain? - 8. How big are the windows? -I do not know. -What is the ceiling height of the apartment? -4.2 meters After that we were ushered into a back room, offered tea, coffee, cake and made small sample packs of all the fabrics I could lay my eyes on. If anyone is familiar with Parisian apartments, knows exactly why... 🤗

I don't go to the stores unless I need to buy something. One time, my son and I went to Dillard's to get me, my son and my husband our Christmas outfits. We match clothes all the time. That time, I was wearing a pair of long blue jeans skirt, a blouse, and a pair of steel toe tennis shoes. Nobody even cared to assist or ask me if I needed a particular style or color. Again, when I go to the stores, I have money to spend. My 12 yrs old son noticed that everyone was looking down on me. So what I did, left that store and came home and upset. Two days later, we came back and I dressed up like I was in church. (The church is the only place where I dress up). To my surprise, everybody wanted to help me. I didn't buy anything and went somewhere to get our Christmas outfits. To me, it's not about how the person dresses so people will treat people well. Everyone is equal especially in the eyes of GOD. Rich or poor, we bleed the same color of blood, red!

Anna, I like that you cover so many aspects of in-person luxury shopping from different points of view, and that you address your sales person viewers. As a shopper I like to preview merchandise online so, if approached by a sales person, I can offer ideas of what I might purchase. This eliminates awkward guesswork for both of us. Also, entering any store with confidence and a smile apparently makes me more approachable because I receive better customer service this way.

You are right dressing the part makes attendants treat you as a legitimate customer. I have also been treated poorly at high end stores in my youth; so sad for the snobs. I gave the salesperson who treated me well the purchase.

Great advice! THANKS for what you do for all of us on this platform I’ve learned so much . I use to feel that way. I laughed to myself on reading an article when a clerk snubbed OPRAH in a Palm Beach Fl. luxury store. Sure she wasn’t looking like herself . …Growing up “dirt poor” I’m quite sure she handled the situation well .

I have found that it depends on the brand. I have had terrible service in Louis Vuitton and will never set foot in one of their stores again. On the other hand I have found the service on their online store to be excellent. The store I really love going into is Dior. Their staff are just so lovely. The last time I went in I was only after a lipstick case but I was treated like a princess. I do like to make an effort to dress nicely because my mother taught me that when you go shopping at a mall or in the city you dress well, whether you are going to Dior or Target, it doesn’t matter. If you look better you will feel better and more confident.

Honestly when you work at sales they train you to classify and try to ‘read’ people. Since you can only look at the way they act and dress, that’s how they’ll read you.

I honestly don't feel intimidated going into these stores. I love to shop and look at the new trends. However I do feel that i'm being "sized up" when i walk in some (not all) of them. i once went in a certain store, and saw the sales lady look at bag, then actually turn her back to me and wouldn't even acknowledge my presence. Another woman walked in carrying an expensive designer bag and was immediately greeted. The customer was very short with the sales person and barely glanced at her. My thoughts were; What goes around comes around. LOL

I wouldn't want to spend my hard earned money in a store where the salespeople treated me rudely.

I usually will ask a few questions and then state my intentions, coming to buy a scarf, coming to try on these shoes I want in the future, you know just be honest. I do walk in like I just got off a yacht lol but I always smile and greet. It’s balance 😅

My mother always told me not to even look in the windows of luxury stores as a kid. She said they were ‘not for us’. We would stand at the bus stop outside of the Versace store in Sydney facing the road with our backs to the shopfront. It was… a lot 😂

The first time I went to a well known beauty salon in Beverly Hills many years ago I felt intimidated. I saw Mary Hart from Entertainment Tonight getting her nails done; Renee Taylor (from The Nanny) yakking away to her hairdresser; Christina Applegate getting color, Christine Lahti under the dryer. But I loved my hairdresser and over the years it felt like home. You can get used to anything!

Really like the video, great advices. I only go into luxury stores to look around, since I won’t purchase from there. I prefer second hand since I can resell in same value when I don’t like them anymore. And I think the second hand value is the real value of luxury products ( which has no advertisement cost on the value anymore).
