I tell you all about the history of this rather unknown Vietnam-veteran Ford M151A2, also known as Mutt, and how it drives. This Mutt is the successor the the famous Willys Jeep and the predecessor to the equally illustrious Humvee army vehicles.

Our first generation 1960, M one five one drives like a dream. A lot of young, inexperienced drivers/soldiers learned to drive on this vehicle attributing to the reputation of rollovers. If you find one, buy it. Nice video.

M151A2 is actually the third generation of MUTT, you had the M151, the M151A1, then the M151A2

That grill did NOT exist on the M151A2 I should know I was a Motor Transport Officer in a Marine Corps Infantry Battalion. I also went through the U S Army school and this is NOT the grill they had either. Other than that, the description you made was pretty good. By the way, I was stationed at the AFNORTH NATO base in Brunssum for 3 years. By the way NO one called it a car. It is a 1/4 ton Truck.

Correct me if but the biggest difference between a jeep grill and a mutt grill is the orientation of the holes right?
@spartacusgladiator

@@InMateTheRebel the direction of the grill. Additionally, we had NO grill cover on our lights that had cat eye options.

It was only the American embassy that fled Saigon in 1975. U.S. military forces had already withdrawn in 1973, two years before the invasion from the north. Jeeps and other military equipment that were destroyed or tossed overboard belonged to the South Vietnamese army. The American military routinely called them the M-one-five-one.

Got one of these Mine is 1979. Made quite a few customisations to it. Replaced the engine with a 5 speed diesel so it's much faster. Also built a custom solid roof over the top. As far as rolling over is concerned , I personally have powerslided it several times and I didn't feel any issues. The body especially the front bumper is extremely tough which is good for ramming. It also turns quite a lot of heads due to its road presence. All in all it's a unique but pleasant experience.

When slung loaded under a helicopter, the slings were attached to the lugs on the wheels, not to the lift hooks. The lift hooks were used when lifting the vehicle by crane onto ships.

Yes I drove those Jeeps a lot. And a fit really nice and back with Chinook especially in the jungles of Panama. In Germany they were great and small backroads because other than the Autobahn the back roads were much smaller perfect for the. Duce and half have had a hard time fitting.

the name Jeep was acually an acronym too, it stood for GP, GPW, and GPA, the original willys\ford\bantam military creations. there was no Jeep brand before 1945 when the CJ(civilian jeep) or CJ2A debuted. Also, the original Willys overland grill did have vertical bars, ford didnt create anything new, they just simplified the original willys design with stamped sheetmetal for quicker production. the origins of the Jeep 7 slot grill are definately willys dna not ford.

That's one of the first vehicles I ever drove. Before I could get it on my Standard Form(SF) 348 I had to attend a class on it. I also had to learn how to back it up along with the other vehicles I was authorized to drive with a trailer attached. On my first tour in South Korea we had the ones with hard tops. They were better in case of a rollover which one did have. Driver swerved to miss someone.

I wouldn't say the 151 is the predecessor to the Humvee, but a descendant of the M38

Nice job with the exception of the "MUTT" moniker. In my experience the M151 series was never called a MUTT, it was officially a Truck Utility, 1/4 ton or to the everyday soldier a jeep, not in the trademark fashion.
@DoctorPetrol
@DoctorPetrol 5 лет назад
Hi Gary, thanks for your response and feedback! Glad you enjoyed the video! I actually did explain that in the video, Mutt being an acronym for 'Military Utility Tactical Truck', a term that was used in documentation by the army and Ford. The term was coined by the army, but indeed; for soldiers it was just a Jeep.

NCO's always said quater ton recruits, said jeep, till they made SP4 When i was stationed for a tour in germany i drove and maintained a151 every day, even an occasional 36 hour misson. once or twice had to pay for gas to get back to our kaserne!

@@DoctorPetrol Actually, yes it was. When you started driving the lever was clearly in the up position. That is the set position. Down, pointing forward is the off position. It may have been adjusted very loose (twisting the top of the lever adjusts this), but it was in the set position.

If your rolling that over at low speed on a level road- you need assistance eating cereal🤪

Somehow a lot of soldiers back in the day managed to roll these though!
@doubledeuce5084
@doubledeuce5084 3 года назад
I totally agree. They will roll on a corner at too much speed without warning, but you have to be careless. Straight road at any speed...no. You can if you swerve it hard. The problem is if the corner is taken too hard and the outside wheels leave the surface they will tuck up under the vehicle throwing off the balance and over it goes.

Within the wider car community I think that circle is rather small, so yeah to the average petrolhead this car is unknown.

It tends to be glossed over or ignored. When discussing the Humvee, for example, people frequently claim it replaced the Jeep, even though it was a Ford vehicle.

The A2 entered production in 1968, they were in Vietnam. Whether that one was or not who knows, as their id plates are easy to transfer. I was under the impression most that were left in the the country were rotted out scrap or worn out.
