On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share a common mistake new gardeners, and even some experienced gardeners, make that can kill their squash plants. Squash, zucchini and other cucurbits are vulnerable to insect pests, but many gardeners miss pest infestations, because they are looking in the wrong place. This video will teach you how to spot pest problems on squash plants and how to control pests naturally.
To the untrained eye, my zucchini plants looked perfect, but they were hiding a big squash bug infestation. We got rid of the squash bugs and their eggs in their seconds and treated the plants to prevent damage. Now that we know what to look for, we can check the plants daily to ensure no further squash bug problems or any other insect problems occur.
I use the following products* to grow squash plants and control insects in my vegetable garden:

The good thing with vertical gardening is you see the bugs as you walk below the vines of squash plants, making it easier to notice and remove in good time.

I followed breellis's footsteps in using a tiny torch to pop the eggs. There's a lil cup full of water that I keep under the big plant, just pop the adults in there when I find them. Got 2 twofers last weekend! Definitely a good feeling to get them while mating. Check for bugs and eggs every day!!!

Thank you 💖 I usually go out every morn with duct tape … nasty critters 😡 However I’ve had back surgery & can’t bend over that far yet. Even with 24” raised beds🥴. So THANK YOU for this tip ‼️ and planting has to wait til we’re out of the high 90s🥵🥵 Got shade cloth up and ready to go 💖 Have a great day 🌻👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

This is why I love your videos! I would've never learned about this if I didn't find your channel! A lot of other channels only talk about vertical planting, space, and soil nutrient/ quality. I learn a lot about bugs and how to get rid of the pests on your channel and how to keep the good bugs!😊 Edit: I LOVE the tape idea on getting rid of them as well!

I literally just doused my cucumber plants in soapy water trying to get a leaf footed bug, they’ll probably die. Now you have me thinking there’s babies somewhere in that bed! These bugs are the bane of my gardening existence! 😫😤

Growing squash is tough. Checking under the leaves daily is the best way to go. It is annoying, but if we don’t do it, it’s only a matter of time til they get the plants.

I've been militant doing this thus far. It's nuts how bad it can get. My brussel sprouts plant was also getting alot. They loved getting in the nooks where the sprout is growing out of. I had to brush them out of there.

Instead of electrical tape - use DUCT TAPE! (remember, duct tape can save the world!) 😉 Actually, though, I've found duct tape to have a good bit stronger adhesive than good quality electrical tape. I'm just guessing that the extra stickiness wouldn't be a problem.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
I used to use duct tape, but electrical tape works better. It is stickier and easier to fit in tight places. Duct tape tends to rip off chunks of leaves, but electrical tape doesn’t.

You have to be careful using it. Plants need their leaves for photosynthesis. I have used Surround before, but it will defoliate your trees if you coat all the leaves, because it blocks their ability to absorb sun. Ask me how I know. It is only a fruit protectant.

Would spinoside also work on this or on melons & cukes? I’m thinking Capt’n Jacks organic.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
Yes, but it takes time to work. Days. The plants have to stay coated in the spray and the insects need to eat the coated leaves. It is more of a protectant. When you spot an outbreak, you want a contact killer to spot treat the issue instantly.

Ok I see you have your zucchini in grow bags, I planted some in my raised garden bed. Why are there more males then females buds and on female I see zucchini forming but it doesn’t look like the female flower opened to get pollenated
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
There will always be more male flowers on typical monoecious varieties of zucchini, because they are smaller, consume less energy, and they must precede the female flowers. If your female fruits are aborting, you are likely lacking pollinators. You only need the female flower to be open. You can just rip off a male flower, peel off the petals and harvest the pollen to hand pollinate.

I don't think that will work well for the leaves. It is more of a protectant for the fruit. It's not good to spray the leaves with it. It will block photosynthesis. I use it on my peach leaves, and it killed the leaves. Now, I make sure to only apply it to the fruits. Pyrethrin is much more effective and won't harm the plant as long as you don't' spray it in the sun and heat.
