This NHL Stanley Cup Final is greasy

The NHL Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers is getting downright greasy. While we saw plenty of clean, big hits in this game 2 we also got some questionable ones. Leon Draisaitl hitting Sasha Barkov up high with an elbow will certainly be talked about for days, we also got 2-3 knee on knee hits, McDavid popping Tkachuk in a scrum, Nurse taken out with a hit, Bouchard held in a headlock while forced to tap, a questionable no call on a delay of game that would have resulted in a 5 on 3 for the Oilers, Charles Barkley dropping an F bomb on live TV and more. It was a wild game 2 in Florida and I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

*Delay of game penalty* - During the CBC broadcast, Ron Maclean (level 5 official) explained that this was a penalty based on the contact of the shot occurring before the blue line. I agreed with that and found the rule book to further this argument. The determining factor is where the puck position was when it was shot. My interpretation initially was that this would be the first point of contact, but the counter argument is that the position of the puck is determined by last contact of stick not initial contact of stick. That does make sense and in that case, the right call was made. I appreciate the discourse!

One thing that can not be understated is how well the Panthers have neutralised McDavid and Drai Imo even game one, even though the Oilers were very active offensively, the game never felt like it was out of the Panthers' control. I think NHL can stop that from happening, but they don't have the guts. As much as I like to agree, losing Barkov of all players would be a major blow to our gameplan. Yes, our team defense is good, but Sasha is the glue holding it down against Edmonton's top line and is often directly matched up with either Draisaitl or McDavid in their man-heavy D. I'm scared for how this series will turn if Barkov is out for even a game and Drai doesn't get a suspension. Not even the direction of who wins the series (Panthers fan), but the overall threat to player safety on both sides of the aisle. Nonsense. The officials are not involved enough & they are not doing their jobs properly when they are. You don't pick and choose when to enforce the rules of a game based on whether or not it is the regular season or the playoffs. The most overused term in the 2023-2024 season is "The team had their share of looks". Looking doesn't score goals, executing without having to take the time to look does. We are watching men playing like boys who are attempting to cheat and injure one another at every opportunity at the same time as faking to draw penalties. Both teams have forgotten what it means to be a true sportsman and play with honor & it's embarrassing to witness this adolescent behavior. It's unprofessional.

Let's be brutally honest here (and I'm not a fan of either team): Nearly every fan thinks the game is rigged against their team, but tend to overlook soft or missed calls that help their team. Looking at this game, I think the refs where all over the place with their calls. Questionable calls on both sides and for me, not a clear line they followed. Alot of calls that don't need to be called (indicating they might be strict) but others they don't call (which is the exact opposite).

@@Pottan23 I can assure you, it is not only in the NHL. I don't really watch that many NHL games since it is a different time zone, country ect (I am from Germany), so I can't say for sure how bad they are on a "daily basis" in the league. But I do see a different "trend" in our league as well, it seems like the game and players are evolving and getting better, and the refs don't. At least it feels that way and I see to many missed or wrong calls here as well. It's always hard to say how bad it is, since the NHL is clearly the stronger league so refs tend to have it a bit harder due to speed and skill as well. You need to compare ref quality to the quality in play as well, so which league has it worse I don't know. Just saying: Seems to be a trend I see in both leagues, so maybe it is also the case elsewhere. Maybe they don't have the right tools, or not enough training or whatever. Or the leagues don't give them good enough guidelines - or (which would actually be the worst): they act as they should act, because that IS the guideline. I think in both leagues you are not allowed to critique them in any way shape or form (which was in itself commented on by a trainer here in germany, who basically said: if you can't put out valid criticism, how do they improve, if the only criticism comes from within closed doors. And I think he is 100% right)
@lanceludwig5349
@lanceludwig5349 13 дней назад
People also tend to forget the refs talk to the players all game long. There’s plenty of times where you question a miss call and then the next time the scenario plays out it will usually be called. They get warned about stuff. If guys take each other out they usually let em play. But to be fair the calls have favored the oilers in the 1st 2. They keep trying to kill soft plays on fl power plays so Edmonton just have to kill half a penalty and keep their streak going for one positive stat.

The oil stain is so dirty it's pathetic and dangerous. Then ya got McOverrated being protected by the ref sneaking in a cheap shot. What a classless display of trash. Edmonton clearly doesn't deserve to share the same ice as Florida. Also, i wasn't a fan of Florida before they started mopping up everyone in the playoffs, I'm not going to become a die hard fan because of this, but I'll never root for a Canadian team, especially Edmonton, they don't deserve to be here. No class, lacking talent, class and creativity. The league needs to treat Edmonton as harshly as every other team instead of protecting Draisaitl and McOverrated at every turn. It just further shows the weakness of that entire organization. I'm sick of watching the oil stain intentionally trying to ruin careers because they can't control their temper tantrums. Disgusting.

Rule says "contact occurs," not "contact initiated," and there is still contact between the stick and the puck within the follow-through and into the neutral zone (see 4:42). That means contact was occurring in the neutral zone after it was initiated in the D zone, which seems to justify the non-call, despite my rooting for the Oilers in this one.

Don't get how nobody is talking about how hunched over Barkov was as well as him looking at the puck instead of his surroundings, rough was the right call.

Neither of those things excuses a player aiming for the head and then leaving his feet.

Someone is a big Oilers fan. You don’t seem to like anything that goes against them. Anyway, as to the delay of game call, there was an official who was consulted on the US feed during the game and he said the determination of delay is made based on where the puck leaves the stick. Yes, contact with the puck begins in the defensive zone but contact is maintained on an upward trajectory until the puck is beyond the blue line. Then the puck loses contact with the stick. Ergo, contact with the puck occurs in the neutral zone, and a puck over the glass from the neutral zone is not a delay. The rule says if contact occurs while the puck is inside the defending zone and subsequently goes out of play a penalty shall be assessed. But in this case, contact occurred OUTSIDE the defensive zone, whether the motion of the shot began in the d zone or not - it’s the contact with the stick that matters. So they got the call right.

Yet you could clearly see that he shot it out of play from the defensive zone. Nbd. Panthers refs helping Panthers win.
