Also, the fact that he doesn’t block shots out of bounds, he keeps it in play. So not only is he wiping easy shots away around the rim, he’s gaining possession afterwards, and that’s definitely like Bill Russell.
@@MaximusR93 Exactly. I hate when some players volleyball spike the ball into the stands with unnecessary force -- probably just cause it looks good and gets views -- when they could have tried to keep the ball alive and force a turnover. Wemby almost always forces a turnover. That's basketball IQ.
His recovery is the best part of his defense. The fact you can drive past him or step back and create space and there’s still a chance he can block you is nuts
there was someone arguing with me that Wemby is too slow to guard perimeter players and i said yeah he wont always be able to stay in front but he has so much length that a normal blow by or step back isnt enough, he is always still in the play. even wide open 3 point shooters have been blocked by this guy
Hell he’s already close to or just right behind Goberts level of defensive impact the only difference is Gobert is in his prime and has gotten this way after years of working to perfect his craft while Victor is just a dam rookie and what he’s doing rn is probably the worst he’s ever gonna be he’s only gonna get better which is bananas.
@@user-rr7bu9fe3k In terms of pure impact and honestly even defensive prowess, based on the spurs trash defense, I'll honestly argue that as of now he's miles more impactful than Gobert, but I absolutely can't tell when it comes to gobert's previous DPOY seasons cuz i'm lazy as hell to look it up
The first play is ALL you need to know. A guy turned down what should have been an open layup, then his teammate did a complete u-turn without even thinking of putting up a shot. It's not the blocks, it's not the altered shots, it's the panic he instills. NBA players flat out panic when he's around. Like, these are the best players in the world and some of these guys don't have a clue what to do when they see him coming. I've seen u-turns and I've seen a lot of jump shots turned into passes because he flashes at the last second.
This is also why Gobert was such an important defender for years, just the way he changed the flow of the game. Its crazier that Victor is gonna be an even better version of him!
already kinda Is.... Better lenght, better athlete, and Better on the perimeter than gobert. lets be real wemby would have won the dpoy if he was in any other team that was top 10 in his conference
@@leonardo_mrll Nah, that's kind of ridiculous. Wemby is a great defender, but Gobert's actually playing most of the game. Defensive impact requires that you be on the floor.
@@blazefactor6849 i agree that gobert staying on the floor more Is valuable but 5 more minutes ain't that valuable 💀 wemby Is still a Better defender overall
He will probably average close to 55% fg% his entire career. Anything by the basket is damn near automatic for him. He could also be a 40% 3p shooter in a couple of years.
@YouBetterSubcribe if he puts on some muscle he will probably see him 60%fg by year 3 or 4 bc rn he can't establish himself In post when he wants bc bigs and even guard can push him out and I don't see him going 40% from 3 maybe like 37-38 at his best but next season I just see him going like 26/11/5 on 50/34/80 splits
@@thunderclapgod2363well he’s shooting 41% on 3’s off the dribble this season and it’s gone up by a big leap every month so far and is at a staggering 48% on pull up 3s this month. I could 100% see him having a 40% season from deep considering this is the worst version of him we’re going to get until he starts to decline
@@YouBetterSubcribeI think we will see 5x5's and possibly even a quintuple double from him. he's probably gonna break the quad double record even if he get's injured. just needs like 5 seasons for that I'll guess
I think it comes down to Zach Collins. He just cannot make a stop to save his life. When he takes Wemby's place, the opponent often goes on a 10-0 run or something even more devastating. If Wemby had a decent backup, the Spurs would have won the dozen or so games that were decided by a few points.
One of the things Spurs coaches have been working with Wemby and he improved on is just staying on his feet (which you saw when the second guy turned around without Wemby jumping). In the beginning of the season you saw him go for every pump fake possible, and just be overly forceful about blocking when he doesn't always need to jump to block a shot. Spurs coaching is helping him develop a better understand of using his skills and body and if you watched every game, you'd see massive improvements with his fundamentals (which is really where he needs the most work)
For REAL. His only two weaknesses are because he's still basically a boy, physical strength and inexperience. Giving POP, of all people, access to him by the time he solves both of the above is going to be terrifying by the time he's 23.
I was laughing so hard at this play, and so was the Spurs' announcer Sean Elliot. It was like a dad chasing down his kids and scaring them into running away from the paint.
This young dude reaches vertical, timing, quickness, speed, and basketball. IQ makes him a defensive force. His not even on his prime. In fact, this monster reminds me of Wilt Chamberlain
@@noahmoreno4714 Sorry but David Robinson, also a former Spur had a better rookie year. Shaq has a lot to say too, he dominated his rookie year. Also Tim Duncan was 4th in MVP ranking as a rookie... A ROOKIE!
i've said this a bunch, just give this kid maybe 2-3 years of really learning the NBA game and developing his skill just a bit more and he's going to be on every single "so and so broke the league" videos. The only thing I want to see from him is to put on a little bit of muscle. he doesn't need that anthony davis muscle or joel embiid muscle. just a little bit so smaller guys can't push him around.
@@blazefactor6849it’s not really the lack of endurance, it’s just the minutes restriction they put him on. They don’t want to raise a possible risk for injury when the season doesn’t matter for them
I remember when ESPN used to do sports science I would be interested to see what Wimby block radius is. They used to do the receiver radius when they catch the ball I wonder what his black radius is
Spurs are Number 1 in assist percentage, and are the youngest team in the league. What you think will happen in 3 years when they are more talented, number 1 in assists, and Wemby is starting his long Prime?.....The shadows of 2014 are coming
He does a lot of DAD blocks for all my dads in the comment his blocks are like when we play with our kids we don’t have to jump. We just grabbed a ball out the air or block it out the air without jumping.
The only way for wemby to not get DPOY in the future is to be out more than 20 games. Like the guy turns the 25th defense into the best in the league just by being there 30mins a game it's just unreal. I can't wait for this summer to see him, gobert and batum together. We might not go all the way but boy be ready to see insane highlights !
I disagree with the Gobert can’t guard on the perimeter thesis. There were entire seasons where he was the best or second best perimeter/iso defender on the jazz. The difference between him and Wemby is that the extra length lets him deter interior shots while still nominally guarding the perimeter
Also usually big men like to box the ball to the third row when they get a block. 8/10, when Wemby makes a block, his teams retains the possession. And that's very Bill Russell-esque. Way, way, more efficient.
We all know wemby wouldbe putting up world record numbers with no restrictions The only reason he on the restriction in the 1st place is to avoid the injuries most bigs (tall, slim ones in particular) face This is why I, ME, think heis on the restriction for
Of everyone who votes for DPOY... if the NBA were like the NFL, w/ an O team and a D team, and you wanted to draft a D player, would any of them not pick Wemby w/ the 1st pick? F no. He's DPOY easy.
Defense is exactly half the game and most of the individual defense effect will not show up in any recorded stats except the W/L column. Everytime I hear about a good offensive player who has average defense being in the top 5 or 10 or whatever conversation I just face palm. If you're an A+ offensive player and a C defensive player. You're a B tier player period.
Agree BUT Scottie pippen shouldn't go up against any taller good defender, as a grizz fan I've wathced enough to know his finish is not on that level yet
I hate when every video about Victor has to throw a "Spurs players suck". So heres a fun story for you Spurs fans out there. Recently there was a video circulating of Wemby and Sochan being the last two in the gym working on their 3 pointer after practice. As great as Wemby is, the Spurs have other great players too. And I think next year Sochan will take another leap offensively to really be another strong option with Wemby. As a reminder, Sochan is like 6 months older than Wemby
Not just this play. Have a look at JJJ’s winning shot. Specifically Aldama… his only responsibility was to not care what happens with the play and just focus on screening Wemby so he does not get involved in the play. Shows you the respect opponents have on Wemby coz they know if Wemby gets involved in that play high chance that shot gets blocked or does not go in. Pop and the spurs should have planned that better.
Also to add, if you watch the game you would notice how memphis’s plan was to let JJJ play most of his minutes when Wemby is on the bench. Watch the game and you’ll see.
Why can't wemby play more than 30 minutes a night? And I'm not looking for "because he's on a minutes restriction" or anything like that. I'm looking for the reason he would be asked to play less if playing more would make the Spurs more successful.
@alandpost Okay, so he just doesn't have enough strength or endurance yet like some other rookies have had. Would you say that's a current downside, but because it's one of the easiest things to improve, he just has massive potential?
This Spurs team was not going to make the playoffs this year. Pop knew that and was more interested in easing Wemby into the system and preparing him to carry the team next year and beyond.
basically this is what went thru memphis's head on the fast break. Oh shit I'm white i cant dunk let me pass it off to my teammate so he can dunk. Hey bro I'm white as well I can't dunk this shit let me just dribble to ball out and make a 3 or pass it to a black guy.
Saying he is great player or leaves up to the hype is one thing but this is next lvl glazing. Buddy giving wemby that gawk gawk 9000 type of slurping.😂
Bruh ngl.... Im not a hater but man wemby is not even fair. He just breaks the game of basketball and its not fun to watch If he stays healthy, hes the inevitable GOAT and the NBA wont be fun to watch for like a decade straight. Imagine yr 3 Wemby playing with an all-star caliber PG... Not fun at all
No, that just shows you how weak the NBA is.... That's an indictment of the league. Jordan, Kobe, Scottie, Robinson, Kemp, Nique', Hakeem, Vince......etc, etc would have dunked on him. Don't hype up some dude because the league plays WNBA strength ball.
@lesansonnet2456 dismissed bedwetter... Yours is way worse. At least boomers know what bathroom to use when you're born with boy parts. Go play 2K and then talk about video game stats and real-life players like it's the same thing.
@@Tyrannosaurus_STFU_III Yep, Wemby is just a 2K player IRL. So sad for you. Let wise people analyze. You're way below this category. Because you say same things than old men in nostalgia. Poor level. But maybe you've time to grow-up again. And... just in case, 2k and other sports games suck. It's better to play really. (you should try ;) )
At his height he should be getting twice as many rebounds as he does. NOT a great place. Everybody will look great when you are watching only their highlight plays. Wait until his team can get out last place before you make a big deal about anything.
He is averaging over 10 rebounds a game along with his other stats. He is a different kind of player then the “big man” your trying to think of him as.
Hes defense will be fine even if theres a career altering injury that takes away hes speed and jump. Thats how well he can defend without jumping. If your floor, your worst case scenario, is Mark Eaton!? Then youre doing good.
