He wrote this for his friend Charlie Wirtz who owned a guitar shop in Dallas. Charlie made Stevie the white guitar he switches to in the beginning. Charlie had died suddenly of a heart attack and this was his tribute to him

This message made me cry knowing that Stevie Ray Vaughan had a horrific childhood and started drinking when he was 8 yrs old. His brother Jimmie Vaughan did an interview, he said they had an violent abusive alcoholic father who beat them all the time but Stevie Ray always got it the worst and didn't know why. I thought to myself I know exactly why, my mother popped her pill and beat me, locked me in a cold dark basement with no windows and a dirt floor, beat me with a board that had nails in it and I had 6 sisters and 2 brothers but like Stevie Ray I was the smallest, very emotional and cried easy so it fell on me the most but I never considered myself a victim but a surviver and better person because of it and have a beautiful happy life. Stevie Ray had his issues like many children that experience that kind of childhood but he was never bitter, angry or hateful, he had so much love and respect for everyone and a beautiful man. My total respect and love to him for the amazing music and encouraging words.

He was a humble, compassionate human being who cared deeply for people. He was never upitty or arrogant. When he plays with his blues idols he tones down out of deep respect for those who were the originators of the blues.

Stevie was a very kind man. I read that he donated to each cities food banks where he performed. He grew up poor, never forgot his roots. Very special person.❤

This is probably everyone's favorite performance. It has everything. Stevie wrote this song for his good friend Charley Wirz, a Dallas guitar shop owner, who had passed away suddenly. Charley built that white guitar out of parts for him and Stevie named that guitar after him. The sticker on the back is an upside down bare breasted hula girl. So he starts with a brown (or red?) guitar, had to tune a string after a few bars, looked to the side to get a new guitar. They brought out Charley and switched him out while he was still singing and playing never missing a beat. Since he changed guitars, he had to change the settings on his foot pedals and also the amps. You might not have heard anything different at first but those adjustments were necessary for later so he could play with the feedback and "sustain" chords with one hand for a length of time. You are surprised no one asks for the studio versions of anything? I "listen" to him in my car while driving but watching him perform contains so much more magic than a recording can ever impart. He gave his all to his audience and besides you can't see the passion and commitment he gives to each performance or see all his incredible abilities! He didn't start singing until his late teen years and didn't have a lot of confidence with his voice but worked on and developed his voice. I love his voice and how he can match his vocals to match the song. People are so blown away by his talent on the guitar that they dont pay much attention to his voice. He plays backwards and sings on "Texas flood" at El Mocambo. MUST SEE!! He did play the guitar with his teeth and that's why he turned around and said my tooth. A whole lot of people can play music. A precious few ARE music. SRV was one of those select few. That's why his playing and singing gets to us. He was the genuine article and we all sense it. You speak for a whole lot of people when you say you love that brother. Fantastic reaction.

The day Stevie died me and my excellent guitar player husband cried our eyes out, for days... A great fact is that Stevie overcame alcohol and reached the height of his career sober. There is a statue of him in the park by the river in Austin Texas, and on the statue they even included his AA ring on his right hand. I went there in 2019 and just cried for a while, didn't expect to react like that but the emotion of his statue just blew me away. He was the best.

Stevie's speech brings tears to my eyes every single time I see it. My Step-Dad was in the North Texas music scene, and had met Stevie and Jimmy. Every story I've ever heard about the man confirm that he was every bit as amazing as this speech suggests. Seeing your guitar hero is one thing. Finding out he's as decent a person as he was an unbelievable guitarist is something else all together.

Born and raised in Dallas, Vaughan began playing guitar at age 7, inspired by older brother Jimmie. By age 12 he was playing in garage bands, and within a few years he joined semi-professional bands that occasionally landed gigs in local nightclubs. At 17 he dropped out of high school to concentrate on playing music. In 1970 Stevie was playing in a nine-piece horn band and then formed his first blues band, Blackbird, a year later. Blackbird moved to Austin and after a few more stints in various bands Vaughan joined Paul Ray and the Cobras in 1975. The Cobras were Austin’s Band of the Year in 1976. After paying his dues as a sideman Stevie formed Triple Threat Revue in 1977. Triple Threat also featured bassist W.C. Clark, and vocalist Lou Ann Barton. Barton left the band in 1979 and the group became Double Trouble, the name inspired by the Otis Rush song. Double Trouble featured Jack Newhouse on bass, Chris Layton on drums and Vaughan became the band’s lead singer. In 1981 Tommy Shannon joined on bass and the power trio was set. In the spring of 1990 Stevie Ray recorded an album with his brother Jimmie, which was scheduled for release in the fall of the year. In the late summer of 1990, Vaughan and Double Trouble set out on an American headlining tour. On August 26, 1990, their East Troy, WI, gig concluded with an encore jam featuring guitarists Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan, and Robert Cray. After the concert, Stevie Ray boarded a helicopter bound for Chicago. Minutes after its 12:50 a.m. takeoff, the helicopter crashed, killing Vaughan and the other four passengers. He was only 35 years old.

He was adjusting the volume treble bass and all that to get the feedback he was looking for in the guitar to get that specific sound that you were listening to that was so famous for him to do back in those days that I don't believe anyone else really could do or understood how to do

The thing with Stevie was, is not only was he the Goat as far as lead guitarists were concerned but the whole band was great and the supporting techs were so good and in tune with him, you didn't even notice he switched guitars at the beginning, mostly because you were like the most of us and blown away by his vocals. He was the GOAT! RIP SRV!

I was lucky enough to be at this concert when I was 15, train/bus rides round trip around 120 miles, I am also luck that my mom never found out where I was or I would still be grounded. His speech has stuck with me all these years he was an amazing human being!

one last side note regarding his studio recordings. He preffered to play live in studio and would basically set up like they where on stage in the studio and recorded the first three albums in basically one to two takes so even his records are basically live recordings essentially. though when recording in step there final album they went with a new producer and he would push them to record there very best sometimes having them do around 20 takes they described it as a bit of a pain but i think the quality shows in the recordings

Stevie should only have been recorded live. I love his studio work, but there is no comparison. He gave everything to the people at his shows, and I think that really made the music so much better. It is something that flowed from his soul, and I think better represented when he was giving it to others.

This song brings a lot of emotion, for me especially when he brings the guitar back to the front after playing backwards and he bends over playing almost like hugging the guitar! Love it

MMB not an amplifier, tuning pegs. He was tuning his high E string, it looked like he needed it higher. The amp and tone controls are actually the knobs down on the bottom of the guitar. Hope that makes sense. I'm just a fan. lol He's one of very few players that didn't mess with his tone and volume controls too much. I don't think I ever saw his with a whammy bar or foot pedals. He could bend it all on his own. His tone is instantly recognizable. His style is second to no one. That audience was listening to every twist. I'm so glad you liked it. SRV was a hippie at heart. The day he died, I stopped packing my house, drank a bottle of wine, all by myself and played everything I had from him, over and over. It seems like I cried forever that day. He's another "forever young". Thanks Man!

Stevie was in a band with several other musicians, including (don't quote me on this because I'm still reading 'Texas Flood') Chris Layton. When the lead singer and others quit, Stevie stepped up and the rest is history. And what a history it is!

This was recorded at the amazing Starwood Amphitheater outside my hometown of Nashville TN...I have seen 80% of all my concerts at this place! They should have NEVER closed it down!

Stevie is getting ready to speak and his guitar moans and weeps. the emotion in his music can be heartbreaking. Stevie speaks to the crowd from his heart it brings me to tears, every time. I think this has a lot to do with why there isn't another SRV and never will be.

Now that you're totally a devoted Stevie fan for life at the highest level, a great vid to get to know him is "Stevie Ray Vaughan - Guitar Lesson." Super cool 10 min vid to react to. There are several SRV films/Documentaries, but one I just watched was so phenomenal - its called "Rise of a Texas Bluesman" on YT - its 2 hours though, but it takes you through the exact way this legend came to be, including your question about his singing (unlike a lot of genres, going back to the old delta bluesmen, singing and playing guitar is just part of being a blues player - that being said in general, guitar players, including Stevie, are almost always self-conscious about their voices, even when everyone else loves them, such as SRV, Clapton, Hendrix, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd). Stevie went through a ton of bands, and sang a bit more little by little through the mid 70s, till he formed his last couple and Double Trouble he just took it and ran with it, no muss no fuss. There is also an 18 min video called "The Guitars of Stevie Ray Vaughan" which will explain his other guitars including 'Charlie' the white one in most of this video. This song is a dedication to the man who custom built this guitar for SRV who passed away not long before he wrote this song. Also he starts the song with a diff guitar, you can tell it is off as he fiddles with it a bit, then does his usual smooth as silk guitar switch for the rest of the song after signaling his crew. Love your videos my brother. I didn't start listening to Stevie until 1 year after he passed and I was a beginner guitar player in High School - they put out the incredible post-humous album "The Sky is Crying" with his studio version of "Little Wing" on it and I immediately feel in love with this sound that wasn't like anything else I'd ever heard. I still - 30 years later and not knowing of him while alive, can tear up when thinking about the crash and how he was lost to us. That says it all.

Stevie doesn't read music, he plays totally by sound and tone. Being such a sound expert, you see him adjusting a string or equalizers on amps to the perfect pitch, especially after a guitar switch. Now it's perfect...

I love your reactions to Stevie, so heartfelt. I also love this song and performance. I listened to it many, many times after one of my children passed away. I took comfort in Stevie's music and his words. You might want to check out SRV plays Voodoo Chile at the Cotton Club. He shakes a man's hand during his solo which just blows my mind. It was pre-rehab but Stevie is giving a soul wrenching performance and we are so fortunate to be able to listen to him.

You're right about Stevie's singing. He started out just playing guitar. But he got some great advice from Otis Rush, one of his Blues heroes and inspiration for the name of Stevie's band Double Trouble, that if he was ever going to front his own band, he'd have to sing. Rush told him to find vocalists that he liked and learn from them. This approach suited Stevie as he'd learned guitar by listening to guitarists he admired, namely Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, T-Bone Walker, Buddy Guy, B. B. King, Lightnin' Hopkins... the list goes on. But for vocals, Stevie patterned himself after his friend Doyle Bramhall (Sr., dad to Doyle Bramhall II). Doyle had an excellent blues voice and would sing from behind the drum kit. DB II inherited that voice from his dad and his guitar chops from Stevie, who was a mentor to him in his youth. Stevie started singing a little bit when he was in Paul Ray and Cobras when Paul needed to rest his vocal cords, Stevie stepped to the mic. Then, when Stevie formed Triple Threat Review (precursor to Double Trouble), he started singing more but split lead vocals with Lou Ann Barton and W. C. Clark. When Triple Threat transitioned to Double Trouble, he and Lou Ann were still sharing lead vocals, and when Lou Ann left, Stevie was finally ready to take the mic full-time. He needed to ease into the singing, but he developed a beautiful, pure blues voice.

"Lovestruck Baby"/"Rude Mood" at Daytona Beach are awesome. Stevie Ray is having such a blast at that concert (as are Tommy, Chris, Reese, and the audience), especially when Stevie is literally dancing as he plays "Lovestruck Baby"! Then, the moment he finishes, he takes off like a rocket doing "Rude Mood" at hyperspeed! When the GOAT delivers so expertly and effortlessly, and delivers with a double portion of joy... whoo hoo! SRV is utterly exhilarating, giving us everything in his soul to deeply satisfy us... and keeps us wanting more... of his singing, his playing, his inspiration, and his true, humble, and loving heart.

Love your reaction. SRV was something else. Once in a lifetime talent. Whether you like his music or not, nobody could ever deny how deep reaching and honest his music was.

Stevie did a great job singing and it was meaningful and passionate. There is a documentary on Stevie that goes through the history of his rise and ending up leading a band. He loved the blues and always, always respected the black men that brought us the blues. Number One is a 59 Strat, though Stevie thought it was a 57 Strat. The buttons he is pushing is reverb, compression, reverb and distortion to provide that punch you hear.

SRV we all love him and miss him no doubts! So I have a studio request of sorts (I've never seen this live but it might exist) The Vaughn Brothers (Stevie has an older brother Jimmy who plays guitar as well) Long Way From Home - that song is a speeding ticket in the making!

Stevie initially picked up the guitar from his older brother, Jimmie. He is self-taught and couldn't read music. He and Jimmie learned from listening to everyone from Otis Rush, BB King, Freddie King, Albert King Buddy Guy, Lonnie Mack, Clapton, Hendrix, Duane Allman, etc. Their mutual friend, Doyle Bramhall, is the one who encouraged Stevie to be a vocalist and front man. Jeez have u read the book of his life yet? If not it's a must. I'm in tears over the fact u can see what I see in feel watching n listening to SRV. He's an Angel. Watching him I can see and feel God God's special creation. SRV doesn't have to try hard or concentrate cuz it's soo natural even tho his puts his entire body n soul into it bcuz he's blessed n graced. Please find the book written about him u will admire n respect even more, ur eye will tear up everytime u see him after not bcuz of abuse or anything just the relationship he n his older brother jimmy had. Blues Legend, Albert King, and SVR did a recording called "In Session". It was early in SVR's career and the chemistry between the two, and the banter between songs, really made it a great album. Worth checking out. I think there's a single from it on video here on TY.

It's easy to miss so much that is happening in this amazing video. He motions to his stagehands (after fiddling with the tuning) for a guitar change (Charley), drops his pick and picks it up, works on the amplifiers, gives one of the greatest speeches of all time, then losses a tooth. If you can read lips, you see him look to the side and say, "lost a tooth...it's gone"...as you see him looking for it on stage. Great man. Great guitarist. From my hometown of Dallas, Texas! Loved and revered here. RIP Stevie.

Kathy, age 53, passed on Oct 8, 2021...my son, Reggie, passed away 8 months later, age 53, on June 2, 2022. They needed each other

I saw him twice live, the second time with Jeff Beck. As much as I respect all the old legends, he was my favorite. He’s the only one that you felt like your soul was being ripped out of your body. So sad that after he got clean and sober, he kept getting better and better. He was taken way too young. I miss what he could have done going forward, but in his short time on earth, he left a legacy that will live forever. He was an amazing human being first, and a phenomenal guitarist second.
