Great video. I sold an e36 back in my twenties and immediately regretted it. It’s been over a decade and I just bought an e46 with the same m54 and 5sp manual as the other. This time, it’s just a fun little car and not my daily driver. It was cheap and I have a handful of issues/codes. I’m looking forward to tinkering and fixing stuff myself. This vid was exactly where I needed to start. Thanks!
Really enjoying these short videos lately. Enjoy the longer ones too but I like these shorter discussion type videos. I've got some decent info from this one and a few others. Thanks Nathan for another great video!
I've had an E46 for 6 years and have done plenty of maintenance. Just bought an E39 that needs a little work and it's great to have your videos as a refresher.
Relatively new to Your videos Nathan, but my How I appreciate You sharing Your expertise with us/me. I have a 2003 525i that I’ve bought new in Aug 03. Great car, beginning to replace parts now as in basic preventative maintenance. Thanks again for sharing
Don't forget also a small coolant leak or leaking injector into one of the cylinders can cause a rough cold start which clears quickly. Great to see you back talking about the M54 engine again. I see you been taking tips from the Doctor again..the title says it all.
I have a 2004 530i.'m glad you still look out for us older M54 guys. I have the zf6hp19 auto so I know it can't handle mods very well, I have rebuilt the mechatronic unit @ 84k miles 2 years later I now just hit 100k, I did all new coils, plugs, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. My car is a 1 owner, and I have kept it immaculate. M5 interior AVINUSA android audio, L7 upgrade but I have tried and tried to get the lm2 module to work in my car everyone says my lm module is supposed to be behind the glovebox but it's under my steering wheel (03/04 build date) it came with the sport setup 18" wheels alot lower than another 04 with 17" wheels I parked next too. I thought about using turbo manifold for a 2002 e46 m54 because I also have a check code for high emissions, and all 4 O2 sensors were at 03.5 or 6, so none of them were open. I just got the car back together and going to hook up inpa to verify my engine temp after a new flush and lower coolant temp sensor that was leaking. I bust my ass keeping this car beautiful, and I love the e60s. What mods can I do with what I have to work with, I would like to remove the secondary/primary air pump and the valve coming off the front of the head, I believe the problem is the emissions mass air flow sensor. Is this possible to do? Will I be able to code it out, or do I have to have the DME tuned to have that system removed? I really want to fit something like a cx racing kit, nothing too big because of the transmission weakness. I really would like your advice I always watch and truly appreciate your guidance on your channel. I hope you see this. Ty
Thanks Nathan. If your BMW is getting close to 100 thousand miles you need to replace that DISA valve. Got mine on Ebay for 55dollars with a 10 year warranty.
Thanks very much, Nathan - very helpful! I'm an M54 guy ('05 330i) and have been chasing an intermittent long crank. No codes, but have replaced cam sensors on both banks, mass air flow sensor, fuel pump, fuel pump relay and new spark plugs (coil packs are good). It happens about once a week but remains a mystery, so I have dubbed it the Mystery Machine, lol.
Hi Nathan love the channel man ! I have got lots of good info from you so Thanks ! One M54 issue I ran into with rough idle in my 99 528 was the vanos. I had changed the boot to the idle control valve, clean the valve, by passed the e vap system. The only thing that worked was the vanos seals. Car would idle up and down or just stall in a few minutes. Re did vanos seals and problem gone !
Nathan. I had a really weird issue in a Chinese maf. The Chinese maf Will rich out the mixture and the car was running too rich! The Only way to pass emissions was putting a real oem maf. And the most interesting part is that no codes where showing... Keep the good work !
Thanks for this! Pretty sure I have all these issues, super rough cold start especially on cold mornings. At the very least I need to replace the entire PCV system, upper/lower intake boots and vac lines, and a coil or two...sigh...I wonder if the fuel pump can also contribute to this too? Love my m54 though!
I had rough cold starts for long time especially in winter throwing codes sometimes with different cylinder misfire. I replaced a crankshaft position sensor and it fixed the issue and got way better. But sometimes it still gives me rough cold start and I don’t know why.. maybe one of the issues you listed in the video...
2006 BMW X3 143k miles manual transmission just today leaving home it started stumbled and shut off. wouldnt restart cranks over horribly. it was 2 quarts low on oil but it made no difference. Luckily i have other vehicles so first thing gonna check the MAF connector and sensor then pull codes. Thanks for this video. my X3 might just need everything replaced since its creeping up on 150k miles
Hey how you doing. I want to say thank you for taking your time to posted those videos.. I got a stupid question 03 x5 3.0...the front differential took a went. The suv right now won't go forward or reverse. I can feel the front differential is holding it..I can't get the nuts on the drive shaft out...can I cut off the front driveshaft so I can move the car..since the front differential ain't good. Do I need to look at other things in the car that could have went bad cuz of this issue
Hi, thanks for the info. I have an issue with my M54B30 ENGINE. We have replaced and ENGINE. Now its cranking but no spark no start. We have tried testing ECU, Ignition, fuses, fuel pump etc. All these showing they are Okay but the problem still there. Your advise please.
Turned out my old spark plug socket rubber insert broke off and prevented correct seating of the coil pack. Took 4 years to figure out. Replaced coil pack, RUTHENIUM plugs and never ran better.
My car threw a code for the exhaust side camshaft sensor. Before that the car made no power until you hit about 3500 to 4000 rpm. I thought it was the DISA valve but it was fine when I checked it. I replaced both camshaft position sensors and turns out the exhuast side's o-ring was busted, so oil was getting on the connectors.
so i have a 528i e39 i got the cold idle thing and the car is not fast like it used to, i want a pcv ccv icv and disa delete and install a catch can but i dont know someone who can do such a thing in my country, any suggestions?
need help i have an e53 and everytime when i start the car for the first time the next day my idle control will be behaving to the point that the engine will shut off. this only happen when the engine is cold once the engine is warm i have no issues at all. any tips will appreciate it .
Excellent video and love the backyard, no fruit trees?? Different topic and would like your opinion. I have been vacuuming oil instead of using the plug on the oil pan. Do you have an opinion on that and changing oil while engine hot or cold. Thanks.
Damn I got an 04 530 with 200k and definitely have a little bit of a rough cold start. Harder to tell since I keep it in my garage. Guess coil packs will be next.
All those vacume lines go back . I bought a 02 330xi 100k miles put a new starter in it and under the manifold the hoses were garbage just disintegrated
I have a rough idle, no check engine light. It rough idles. Before a check engine light came on, and I got a cylinder and misfire. I’m willing to spend extra, for an original ignition coils. My check engine light comes on here and there, I have misfire, and lean codes, cylinders misfire like cylinder misfire 2,4,6.
Hi My engine is shaking like crazy And when its cold there is a poping sound from the intake side And on the obd2 reader it gives cylinder 4 5 6 misfire Can you help me pls
Very timely video Nathan. 64K on a '02 330Cica. Rough idle only when first cold. No check engine lights. Plugs were changed by a BMW Master tech back in TEXAS, before I retired and moved to Florida, at 60K. Boots are all new..Car uses NO oil. Oil has always been changed every 3k. Does this sound like the coils? If so, is it better just to go ahead and replace all of them at once? I am inclined to use the original BMW coils unless you can recommend a solid replacement vendor. Thanks for your help! The shop is looking GREAT!
lp2565 I would say the start of a bad coil pack or the start of a broken ccv, I would keep running it for a bit to see if it throws a code , you can buy could from Bosch on Amazon , they have a actual amazon store on there , all 6 are about $129 , but make sure that’s it first
@@NathansBMWWorkshop If I scan the car with ISTA+, will it show bad coils without throwing a code? Damn, I hope it isn't the ccv. Wanted to wait until 100K to pull the intake off to change it out and do the vacuum hoses and coolant pipes.
I changed all hoses, new pcv system, DISA, throttle body, intake boots...still have this annoying fault : DISA activation final stage. No idea what it means, Carly says, "not serious"...but it bugs the hell out of me and still there after tons of drive cycles. All genuine BMW from FCP
I have E46 325ci and idle problem.. doesn’t matter if cold or warm when i stop the rpm goes from 500rpm to 900rpm few times (5-6) and than settle at aprox 750rpm. I have new rubber from maf till throttle valve.. idle valve is cleaned, new vdo maf sensor, new disa valve, new spark plugs, new valve cover gasket.. new fuel filter, and fuel pump, end new camshafts sensors.. diagnostic doesn’t show anything.. do you have some idea what to look? Thank you in advance, wish everything best in new 2021. 👍🏼
I watch your channel all the time as an E46 owner. The thing here is that the title says "this plug will change everything on your E46" Where is that part Nate??
So I've always wondered if you can put the aluminum valve cover on the M54B30 (03 e39 530i)and still some how keep the OE CCV system connected to that aluminium valve cover...? Too much CCV for the engine? I know that the aluminum valve cover has a CCV on it ,but getting a used aluminum valve cover may have the CCV diaphragm all worn out or gunked up with carbon. I want a aluminum valve cover on my M54b30 but I dont want to spend over 300$ for a new one. Haha Do they have kits for the ccv on aluminum valve cover for M54 ? Great videos btw
My original MAF was causing the LTFT to be in the +10/12 range. I changed it for a after market and it from to near zero. Is that good. Cleaning the original one did not help.
I’ve been chasing a cold start issue for ages now I’ve replaced everything possible and it still does it. My last thought is I have a leaky injector that fills the barrel up overnight mines the M54B22 doesn’t seem to do it for a couple days it I take it for a long hard blast though
There’s some oil in the intake yes can’t work out why it’s not long had a brand new meyle HD ccv system and O2 pilot mod installed it doesn’t appear to use any oil at all. I finally fixed the cold start problem it was dodgy camshaft sensors!
@@dexietyy7922 i did the same thing like 2 years ago, now the intake is unusually wet, maybe the ccv froze up and broke down again, i also changed the cam sensors this year but original bmw for like 180. it also got error code 124 right now, the car never had big running problems but it has a loss of power most of the time
@@Yumuura-ze5qp think it’s just an E46 thing as long as it’s not excessively oily in the intake it’s fine oil vapour and mild carbon deposits are normal my throttle body always stays clean as a whistle so I’m not worried about it
On my m54b22 i have a misfire that comes and goes at cold start, sometimes when i turn off the (after the first start) and try to start it up again it idles fine. Its very confusing because when the car is warm it functions normally.
Need help 2008 n52 oil level sensor keeps reading inactive and I changed the sensor need to fix this ASAP cuz I go on long trips and I don't want to be low on oil at any point in my trip if anybody can help thanks tried looking it up on the internet and I just don't understand it
Could be a fuel line popping out above the tank in the back seat. Had it happen in my 36, dont know if its common. Dumped about a quarter tank after it came off fully lmao. 15 minute fix and I guarantee it won't come off again
one more thing! VERY often overlooked and rarely mentioned: 🤓 The hydraulic lifters OFTEN clog and cause all kinds of engine fault codes, NONE of these codes actually mention to check the hydraulic lifters, they always "blame" another part. hence you end up replacing alot of parts which are still good without getting to the root cause. Try HYDRAULIC LIFTER CLEANING FLUID first, this stuff is meant to do just that, and it often really works! this is the simplest fix for your M54 engine, and you can't really hurt the engine with cleaner lifters, even if there is another fault as well.
Nathan I have a different problem, my idle is perfect on start up, but when I come to a stop at a traffic light and I drop the rpms it bounces. After a couple of bounces it normalises again at 750rpms.
@@NathansBMWWorkshop I already did that, boots are new, intake gasket is new, o ring disa is new, icv is flapping and is clean, new spark plugs, new vacuum hoses, disa holds vacuum. I don't know what else could cause it
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Pcv is new as well. Once I plug in my car and start to activate my vanos on the A side it's rather sluggish before it reaches a steady increased rpm. Should it bounce around before becoming steady, or is this maybe the culprit of my problem after all?
Nathans BMW Workshop Oh thank you 🙏🏼 I also have a Linking Error on my obdII port. Can’t find anything about it. Have new CKP but no spark at coil packs.
Nathans BMW Workshop I have that secured and still nothing. If I were to buy a 20pin adapter, would I be able to pull the codes from there and maybe bypass a possible short or bad ground somewhere??
@@NathansBMWWorkshop Oh wow, thanks for the quick reply, bad idler pulley might make sense, as with a coldstart theres squeeking and after the squeeking goes the whistling comes
@@marioturkalj3126 I put in an after market IACV 18mths ago. two days ago it nearly died at a stop. Put in back the original IACV after good cleaning. It works again but sometimes the RPM can dip to almost stall at first hot start. The after market IACV was a little stiff when trying to rattle it. When testing it on bench, it will close and wont open back slightly when voltage removed. When opening it fully, the valve will return to the slight open position without voltage.
Yo NATE HELP, Get a snapchat! I'm not sure if Instagram can do the same; not social media savvy. I have a question on my 1998 528i e39, i just want to visually show you why my shit acting up. I did a ccv delete too catch can conversion and when i turned my car on and pulled he dip stick out, oil shot out in my face, i figure its a vacuum issue cause I get resistance when removing the oil cap. When I turned it on at first it was chugging crazy. I put the big main hose that was connected to the VANOS thing and i put my return hose feeding back into the oil pan, not sure if thats one of my issues, i seen on one of your videos with you saying too plug that return hose thats apart of the oil dip stick. Well iseen your videos, im having trouble. I only pulled out my ccv cause I had to replace that coolant bar hose due to being old, so following your advice since I had the manifold off, I decided to replace things, for proventive measures. I have a few other things I just want your quick advice, if that's okay. If needed, I'll cash app you for your consultation.
All what i have done is, new disa, intake boot, new ccv, all cam and crank sensors new (Hella sensors), cleaned throttle body, cleaned ICV,fixed few air leaks what i found..Spark plugs are chanced 6000miles ago..all those parts was damaged, i bought this car really bad condition.now it indles so so smooth but warm start is a issue..😅
@@NathansBMWWorkshop also there a strange smell in the expansion tank Smells like combustion here Mecanics said its a sign of blown head gasket im a bit worried
Write the procedure down in separate lines, tick each line on disassembly, cross out each line on reassembly. Try and fit in a vanos rebuild if possible, adds a few hours but if you have time it will save time later. I found the hardest bit was getting the dipstick back in so try and just move it to one side if possible. ShopLife TV and 50sKid also have PCV tutorials so watch them too, it will help with familiarisation. ShopLifeTV recommends changing coolant lines under the inlet manifold, be very careful if you do this as they are brittle and bits can fall into the block (like with mine!). I couldn’t detach the fuel line, not sure how it comes apart but it wasn’t a problem really, easier if you can but not crucial.
@@rickh1634 the 50skid tutorial is great along with the included fix for the oil burn that usually begins when the pcv fails. The biggest tip is to buy the correct angled kit (some sell a 45 or 90 degree kit) and absolutely get the winter / covered version.
I haven't watched the entire video but somehow I figured out its going to be about negative effects of some plug being disconnected. Let's see if I was right
The "Plug" is for his channel as in "He is plugging his channel" by using a title that would make you think, A Ha, he has found the smoking gun that causes cold weather startups on the E39/E46 etc. It is akin to a fast food commercial where they highlight a giant, perfect looking triple burger with all the fixins and when you go get one, it resembles something all together different than what you saw in the picture on the T.V. It's called advertising, albeit false advertising. Everything this guy just regurgitated I have known for years, I have an E39 of 2000 vintage, it is all sorted and runs perfect. If you own one, you better learn how to work on them.
I quit bmws. Now own a mini cooper S r53 2005. Fun car. Buuut seems there in america ,bmws have lots of problems, in Europe its not that. Try to find a contact with somebody frome Europe to send you parts frome Autodoc.
Nathan, i sow some mecanics ( here in europe ) that will find the cause fast . But never hear them ," ohhhh this its nasty" . You a man and a mecanic. Seems mecanics in Europe and america are complete diferent animals. Like in sports to, americans like to " dance" and talk a lot.
