Ever wondered if the secret to better communication and ultimately a better life could be as simple as choosing the right tool? In this eye-opening video I dive deep into the surprising advantages of using a simple pen over modern technology.
Your ability to communicate is the most important asset you have and every significant achievement, from getting a raise to winning hearts, hinges on how effectively you express yourself. This video isn't just my musings; it's a challenge to the digital age. I test the hypothesis that restricting myself to a pen and a strict two-hour timeline can lead to content that resonates more deeply with viewers.
Moreover, I delve into a broader societal critique, contrasting the American and European educational systems, questioning the unchecked embrace of technology, and speculating on future scenarios where AI might dominate communication. "What happens if we allow GPT to come further than introducing the phone but we go as far as to introduce AI, a tool that can communicate better than human?"

The reason the kids in the U.S. have Ipads, is all by design. The powers that be want us dumbed down. I studied childhood development, and the fact is, that if a child is deprived of crawling and exploring it's environment, it suffers developmental delays. If it isn't in the hand or in the mouth, it isn't in the brain. So, the power of the pen is real. Thank you Dries.

Let me know what you think about these slightly broader style videos. I'm testing out creating a mix between art related videos and more general helpful videos.

Writing with a pen on paper changes the way you write. While writing my first book I had to kill time in a cafe and, since I left my laptop at home, I only had my pen and a notebook with me. So I decided to work on a chapter the "analog way" and lo and behold, it was very different compared to writing on a keyboard. My thoughts had a different flow pattern, no distractions because I just marked the subjects that needed further investigation instead of opening a browser window and being tempted to "just take a short look" at social media sites. In short, it was a different kind of writing and I enjoyed it very much.

Have you gone back to that writing afterwards?
@ErikMKeller

@@driesketels yes, from time to time. Especially when I felt that the combination of "analog" and "digital" helped getting my ideas in order. Writing with a pen requires to "sort" the ideas first and then start writing. I used transferring the "analog" writing to the digital realm as a chance to add corrections and adding the information I marked "to be researched". It's always a matter of deadlines, though. 😎 There is/was a creative writing exercise called "no backspace" if I remember correctly. One is supposed to write a 100 word piece and is not allowed to use the arrow keys or backspace to "emulate" writing with pen and paper for those of us having "pen anxiety". 🤣

Hey Dries, I enjoy all of your videos that I've seen.... because you are a great communicator!... but yeah, I get it, sometimes the thing you labour over most can have the least appeal or traction.... Call me old school but I'm very analogue, from cycling to the studio today and making with my hands to sometimes leaving home without my phone or forget to charge it, I don't have any apps or even use the camera on it. When I observe people of all ages around me it's as though they can't spend time alone, glued to their screen like some kind of addict and are oblivious to the real world around them. I like to see how long folk on their phones, walking, notice me or we collide. Long live pens!

Wow, a mere two hours to research, write, record, edit and upload a video seems very intense!
@driesketels

mainly because there's not a lot of research, editing and recording going on. Predominantly writing an outline and recording in one take

I like the broaded video idea. You have interesting thoughts and perspective on things. I would buy a book if you ever decided to write one❤

Thank you! And yes I've been postponing on writing books for a while now hahaha. If I don't die I will most certainly write a couple at some point.

Obesity in North America is also due to loss of cooking skills and reliance in fast food and prepared foods which are usually high in sugar and fats and salt. These are all flavours that were hard to get in our evolutionary past so they are quite addictive. Unfortunately, the combination is also very bad for our health. Edit: the salt, sugar and fat are added because they make us eat more -- and spend more. Profit motive at the expense of society happens again.
