The first RPG I published started as a Dungeon World hack, and it has 20 classes hehe It also has 45 races. And 40 especialization (kind of a mini class that you can add to your character, that is NOT related to the basic class). Basically "compendium classes" but with another name. Or for those familiar with D&D 3.5, prestige classes.
@@tabletopbro Nah man, I love your stuff and wish you got more traffic so bad. After finding out about Blades in the Dark by accident, I slippery sloped myself into your Dungeon World vids and am now 100% part of the cult that this is the way roleplaying should be. Now if I want to play a wargame I play Warhammer. If I want a narrative game I play Dungeon World with friends or Ironsworn if solo. I have no need for mainstream games that are just sub par at being either. I really do feel like part of a conspiracy theory nowadays but soon, we'll be the ones laughing when they realize we're right! ...right? Anyway, here's to hoping you get a dungeon world let's play podcast Patreon together so I can sub. It might not make much money but I'd sure enjoy it. Good luck and hang in there. I appreciate what you do!
Another fun video. Class Warfare changed the game for me. Lets everyone really play what they want so that the fun is maximized. Thanks for doing the doing.
I recently converted my two D&D campaigns to DW and despite the advice of the DW subreddit to keep stuff simple at first, I chose to ignore their advice and dive straight into class warfare head first. It has been a BLAST, best choice to not heed that advice. It let my characters build their characters akin to their D&D characters, and even let some of their characters shake things up to really capture the character they want to play. Would 100% recommend.
i got this book very quickly after getting dungeon world. i feel like its almost a necessity to have as a toolkit when planing a game. even just for the ideas it can inspire for adventures as well as the cool characters people can play with it.
How extensive does class building get? This sounds like just the thing to get my 5e group to try out Dungeon World. If I can translate their 5e characters with this, they might be intrigued. For instance, is it possible to build or re-flavor the options to make an artificer? That's the one that's holding me up the most.
Pretty extensive. I flipped to a random page and it was a specialty called “Shadowmancer” which was a magician who controlled shadows. There’s like 88 specialties (idk if Johnstone added more after release) so I’m sure you could find something!
@@tabletopbro That sounds awesome, I won't lie. I'm also a little concerned about power creep with constructed classes. I know Dungeon World is generally good at maintaining somewhat powerful characters who can still be considered vulnerable due to generally low HP, but do you notice any specialties or anything being capable of breaking the game?
I bought this a while ago, unfortunately my group get option paralysis very easily. It is a great book though, and an easy recommendation. Good video, though it seemed short.
I'm not a boomer. I'm GenX. Anyway, one of my favorite things in Dragon magazine years ago was an article for BECMI, where race was class, and it was a whole thing about how to custom create your own class by picking all the different character traits you wanted basically a la carte. Remember, every class back then had its own xp progression, so each trait you chose had an xp cost which added to the overall. You could have a powerful or diverse character with a slow progression or a more specialized one with a faster progression. And you could choose some traits at certain levels, kind of like martials that gain spells. (Issue 109 btw) I always wished D&D or other games had something like this, but then games went in a different direction, which is fine with me. Like I said, I'm not a boomer. They're grouchy af about everything.
I spotted the "Forbidden Lands" box in your shelf. Do you like the setting and/or the game engine? 🙂 I venture a guess: The setting of "Forbidden Lands" combined with DW plus Perilous Wilds could be DOPE.
I love all of this and I personally would use it. My players won't touch anything unless it's in an online character builder so I guess I'm out of luck there
Hi! You probably don't remember, but you helped me out with problematic Nova player in my Masks campaign, when i asked your advice (very thankful for that). I wanted to ask you, have you heard something or maybe even played Avatar Legends? Its PBA set in... well... Avatarverse. Just wanted to hear a few of your thoughts about it, becouse my players actually hipped about the world of the game, but not so much about learning a new system (was kind of a pain to make theam try out anything but dnd). I asking you because... well... you are the only one who makes Masks content and those two looks like they have a lot in common. Thanks! (P.s. My English still sucks)
Don’t recognize the username, do recognize the helping you with your problematic Nova! I’m familiar with Avatar Legends but I haven’t actually played it or read much of the rules. I know it gets disparaged online, but so does dungeon world and that’s my favorite system
@@tabletopbro Here's an idea: As far as I know about Avatar Legends it gives the combat a new coat of paint by introducing some mechanics (IDK the details, sorry). Buuuut ... maybe that's an interesting topic for an upcoming video: "How is Avatar Legends combat different from DW combat?"
@@tabletopbro You know, the typical DnD style Thief/Magic-User... I'm prepping running Temple of Elemental Evil with DW and wanted to offer some classic racial Class Mixes as Custom Classes.
@@fchrisb804 That doesn't really help😅😅 What kind of magic are you looking for? What specific thiefy things do you want to offer? Are you looking for a thief build that can slip in totally undetected using illusion magic? An assassin that can use elemental magic at range? Some other sort of rogue that can turn people into magnets effectively. There's a lot of options offered, and not really a generic "Thief/Magic user"
After i got that years ago (like 8 years maybe) and after lots of games and characters we got back to regular classes. we found it gave us too much options. Some combinations are just wtf.
Hey man, I know it's not on topic but you're kinda THE Masks guy on RU-vid, so... Could you do a video on ways/tips of playing as an older generation in Mask (Gold/Silver/Bronze)? I recently showed Masks to my friends and they were super on board on the game's idea and system... Untill I said they had to play teenagers... Like, modern teenagers. It was like a bucket of cold water on them. So, is it possible to hack the system to play as an older generation? Has the community done it (I could not find anything about it on my research)? I was thinking about maybe playing as one of the older generations (Bronze, for example), but as teenagers, since that would allow my group to roleplay as the generation closest to our own without having to change the playbooks. Maybe play into the "lost generation" theme the book imply. Has anyone tried it? Anyway, great video and great work!
Hmm, class warfare? I had expected more Marx, or strife between classes. End the reign of wizards! Down with the Nobles! such stuff is also missing. Real world issues like peasant or class revolts.
@@tabletopbro Hm, then either they chose the wrong name, or missed content easily available through just the title. But I assume this was a sponsored video. Sounds like it.
@@KootFloris oh man I wish it was sponsored. I just have the supplement and think it’s cool and want to share it. I don’t necessarily think you need a supplement to run a campaign set in a peasant or class revolt. In fact, it’s probably more thematically correct to NOT buy a supplement talks about the proletariat overthrowing their capitalist masters😂
@@tabletopbro Thanks for the reactions. I think there's lot of possibility in peasant revolts, in cities forbidding all rogues or wizards entry, of merchants exploiting workers or even slaves and see if players would address such issues, or ignore them for their own robbing and killing sprees. 😉😆🤣
@@tabletopbro That's the great thing about there being so many RPGs on the market. A literal metric ton, most with different options and choices, styles and interesting mechanics. PBtA games in general are not for me. The mechanics feel like someone is forcing me to rewire my playstyle, which makes it (for me) feel completely disconnected. But, DW... is definitely not for me... mainly due to that one guy and his hypocrisy. I tried it, and then his BS happened, and I immediately tossed it in the trash. Anything associated with that guy in any way is taken off my list. Still, to each their own.
