Dont dismiss the "disco experimentation" too fast. That album is one of my favorite things to come out in the last decade. I was hopelessly addicted to it for months. Definitely check it out, Justin!!
Fun fact - Mike Kerr actually uses a bass guitar instead of a normal guitar and does all the bass and "guitar" parts. He's also responsible for all the backing vocals. In a live setting the backing vocal parts are either triggered by Ben on the drums or, like recently, there is a third guy on the keys who helps them with all the extra parts. They are usually quite busy during a live set, especially Mike who has to manouvre between the pedals as he's basically acting as both the guitar and bass player in the band. It's definitely worth seeing them live and it never ceases to amaze me how much noise they can make being basically a duo.
@@SuziQ. No need to keep secret he stole the technique from other bands before them. Royal Blood are the poor man's Death from of Above 1979 ;) DFA1979 were using bass as lead guitar/instrument active since 2004. DFA are poor man's Lightning Bolt active since 1994.
@@alloallo1977dfa1979 songs have a very different from RB songs, just cause they both have a bass as lead doesn't mean Royal blood coypied them. Mike uses it a very different way than the previous mentioned
DFA1979 has never once written a riff as cool as probably anything in the top 30 RB riffs. Mike Kerr is a way better writer than those guys.@@alloallo1977
Justin, Now that you’ve done Royal Blood, you might want to check out cleopatrick. They toured with RB in 2021, but I already had tickets to see Jerry Cantrell, and couldn’t miss that show. I keep hoping they’ll come back to San Diego. We hardly ever get good bands, though I did get to see Wolf touring his first album. That was awesome. He didn’t play any VH songs, but covered “Them Bones,” quite well.
@@alexmaw4482 , “Daphne” or “Hometown” or ? The new song (“Lost”) is fuzzier than their usual songs. Edit to add: Almost everything from “The Boys” would make me happy. Idk how I forgot “Bernard Trigger” and “the Depths”.
@@alexmaw4482 , I wish they were touring with Royal Blood. I bought tickets recently, and I’m bummed that they’re not joining them on this tour. Let’s petition for the depths, since we both like it a lot.
I truly appreciate Royal Blood. Their style is consistent, kick-ass modern bluesy rock with new production elements. You get the feel of a live band and it’s really great to hear vocals that don’t feel like every single line has been so hyper produced that it doesn’t breath at all. AUTOTUNE be the work of the devil.
I saw RB live recently. They brought in other musicians, so it was a full band, and they were 🔥! They were also in a good mood which was infectious. The audience was really happy. The opening band should have been cleopatrick, instead of some punk chicks, though.
Just seen them live supporting Muse this weekend - was a great performance. I just couldn't get over how they were able to make so much noise when there are only two of them.
First time I heard "Typhoon" on the radio I had to come home, pick a bass off the Wall of Shame, get out the octave pedal and the Sovtek Big Muff and learn that dang bass line because it was so damn cool. This is, too.
Lights out is great, too! I didn't know he bi-amped, it has a distinctive sound. He definitely has an octave pedal and a phase and a fuzz. but maybe also reverb and some sort of compression pedal, just because everyone has one on their board, I swear!.
@@aprilkurtz1589 , “Ten Tonne Brick” is good, too. Back when I discovered them, there was a lot of discussion about what Mike uses to get the sounds he gets from his bass, and he’s tried to hide it, but fans near the stage have noticed a lot of different tools he uses. He has said all along that he routes his bass to either one or two guitar amps and a bass amp. We know about some of the pedals. I missed a chance to see them last year (with cleopatrick, who were inspired by RB), because I already had tickets to a different concert that night. I hope they come back soon. Next up: Disturbed, with Breaking Benjamin; and Highly Suspect (I don’t remember who’s opening for them). Jinger is on one of those shows, but they’re not my cup of tea.
@@SuziQ. It's too bad you missed them, but they'll be back around. The show you're going to sounds excellent. Jinjer isn't my cup of tea, either. I wish Wolf Alice would tour. I've not got tickets to anything this summer as of yet. So far just some track days with friends. It's cheap fun, unless you crash your car.
@@aprilkurtz1589, I got tickets to see Royal Blood. It’s going to be a busy week, because I’m seeing Wolf (Mammoth WVH) again, and Highly Suspect, as well as RB. The summer was only Disturbed with BB (and Jinger, which I deliberately missed because Irvine in the summer is a PITA of a drive, and seeing the opening band = massive traffic). RB is playing close to home, at the Del Mar fairgrounds on November 27th. The others are downtown at the HOB, which means a $30 parking charge, but I love that venue. I do wish more bands would play San Diego. I wanted to see The Darkness, but driving to LA is a pain.
I am a complete nobody, no one gives a flying squirrel what I have to say but in my head I like to think what I would say on this or that podcast. Justin's show is the one in my head that I wish would be reality. He knows so much about the music of music, something I am just so passionate about. I would love to get to sit down and have a face to face conversation about everything, and I do mean everything, about all things music. I am so glad I found this channel. I love the technical, nitty-gritty, music talk.
I met you once in LA backstage, you were in a pair of Bjorn Bjorg underwear and just walking around. This was an AXS TV concert taping at Nokia Theater in LA, maybe 2012-ish? My friend worked production and got me into the show. Lol now you are more famous for YouTubing than your own music, but we can all agree you are an incredible and talented guy. Rock on and ride again Hawk.
Love Royal Blood! 🖤🤟 Saw them live at the Eden Project in 2017 and it was F*cking Awesome! For an outdoor gig, the sound quality, the atmosphere & how hard that duo rocked that night was absolutely mind blowing! Definitely recommend seeing them live. And yes, it was Ben doing the backing vocals. I unintentionally stopped following Royal Blood after How Did We Get So Dark. I think there was a fairly large gap between that and their next album where I fell behind, so it looks like I’ve got some catching up to do 😅
I’ve seen Royal Blood at the Eden Project twice and then last week supporting Muse in Plymouth. Always nice to meet them and they have grown immensely live.
Was going to comment pretty much the same thing and add people should check them out if they haven't, fans of Royal Blood i mean, but yea Justin should cover them.
Mike has said QOTSA is one of his influences. Josh has produced at least one song of theirs as well. And Mike was part of Josh’s Desert Sessions the last time. He sang a song called “Crucifire”. It’s great!
This is the kind of video I love from you, Justin! Thanks for another fun, entertaining and informative video. I'd never heard Royal Blood's music before, and now I am going to go check out their ouvre.
Just got home, this evening my mates son had been telling about Royal Blood so this is a pretty timely find, Thanks Justin (from a fellow 4-to-the-floor fan)
When i watched it, this thing about "crazy baby" i thought that, at least, in this case they use real words, because there is a reaggeton song where they finish all words in "onsky" and they simply add "onsky" in every word they use... 😂...
I love how the light/rhythm pulses in the RB video flash Justin Hawkins picture-in-picture 😂😂 --that, and how he heard the drums and bass Love Hungry Man. I want a version where they just replace the tracks with him singing those parts.
I just love their music and the cool way they produce it. Definitely gotta check if any other bands did that with a bass. And the amount of sounds you can make with 2 instruments just amazes me.
@@deetcool7267 Oh yeah I’ve heard of them and the 90’s was one of my favorite eras of music. So I sure I’ve heard them but I’ll check them out again. Thanks!
I thought it was common knowledge Mike plays bass lol. And he has the sound split on his bass, that’s why it sounds like there’s 2 or even 3 guitars. Mike also uses a bass Mattocaster which is the guitar shape Matt Bellamy from Muse uses, had designed and made for him by mansion guitars which Matt now owns.
Anyone else feel like Royal Blood is basically a modern Local H? Hybridized bass/guitar and drum combo. The difference being while Kerr obviously doesn't try for the power-pissed post-grunge vocals Lucas can employ, they reintroduce a lot of mid oughts style like when Franz Ferdinand and the Hives and Vines were big.
just a suggestion from an okie girl here (girl from Oklahoma) have u heard of Sleep Token ??? maybe review or react to some of their music ....i think u will like them ...but who knows until u listen for urself ...i'd watch that video in a heartbeat ...i think u have a great view about music and ur sooo knowledgeable about a lot of things pertaining to music theory ... i think sleep token is right up ur alley to pick apart in a teaching way ...plus it's really good music and very refreshing to hear a new type of genre if that's what they trying to do also b/c there's not really anyone/bands I've heard of to mix so many genres into one song and make it work and or transition so smoothly for it to make sense...maybe it could inspire u or maybe not either way i wanted to suggest them for awhile ...i want to hear from someone who knows music (like you do )if sleep token is a good technical band or if its all hogwash LOL ...
Yes, it is cool, i liked it very much. An your analysis of course! In other hand today Extreme has launched a new single, it sounds really good...Nuno said that it is his favourite solo in the uncoming album. And finally, i already got the JHRA ultimate mug... Wonderful! You cut your hair isn't it? You look handsome!
Cowboy shirt buttons whipping the finish of a classical guitar are like Levis 501 rivets scouring the paintwork of a classic Aston Martin DB5. Really harsh on surfaces. Speaking of rivets, Royal Blood are a riveting band. The intro would mix well with D&B music.
How about Coach Beard wearing a The Darkness tee on the final episode of Ted Lasso? Epic. Made me smile. Love your channel enough to let you date my sister.
To be fair it was Dundee. That being said, they did come across as being complete bellends. I suppose we all have our off moments, maybe they were still in a bad mood from being completely unimpressed by the catering in the green room.
@@theritchie2173 i was there and me and my friends all saw it as a big joke and loved the set but then again we’re all musicians so we understand what it’s like to have a shit crowd
Did anyone else notice that in the finale of Ted Lasso, coach Beard is wearing a The Darkness tee-shirt in the opening scene? Irrelevant to this video, but still cool.
I thought it was great! And I hope it made a bunch of people think about the Darkness and how good they are and thinking I gotta pull my records out again!
I think this song is interesting, and a development in their sound, because Mike is actually playing chords on the bass in this song. I think his signature orange Fender is half guitar strings, half bass strings, which would lend itself to the chord playing tekkers
Hi JH. Love the channel mate. Shades here from Pretty Maids. Think we’ve played Sweden Rock together. Thoughts on first couple Of Minutes of the last Ted Lasso episode. Meaning the Swag:-) keep up the great work. Best 🙏🙏🙏
Surprised to learn that the last track of Highway to Hell was Love Hungry Man? Always thought Night Prowler was the last track on that AC/DC album. Also worth mentioning that by 1980 disco was considered dead, and in the Eighties electronic dance music emerged. Cannot really say the 'E' took me out of my 'familiarity' because Mountains At Midnight clearly uses the key of E. Do not think that Blur is actually modern punk, rather, modern pop-punk has it origins in bands like Green Day. Drums as near as I could count are beating out common time. Nice to see Royal Blood on JHRA.
Night Prowler _is_ the last song. Love Hungry Man is the second to last. I’ve got the album. Edit to add: Thank you for helping me remember which song ended in “Shazbot nanu nanu”! It’s been bugging me for weeks.
Justin can i ask a question, have you ever met Ricky Gervais and if so how was it? I listen to a lot of his old radio stuff and podcasts most evenings when i goto sleep (not due to it being boring) and when he plays your songs on the radio show frequently he always says glowing things about how much he loves your music.
Off topic, and I know you’ve already done 2 sleep token vids, but you might want to have a listen to Ascensionism or Take me back to Eden. Pretty epic and a lot of variety within the tracks.
'Bout time Justin. Big, big fan of this band since the first record. Their last album my least fav but this new stuff sounds great so far. They bring it live too.
That whole AC/Disco thing a) was really funny but b) got me wondering why we categorize music by genre? Is Def Leppard metal, rock, glam, pop? They're all those things according to Wikipedia, but who cares? Def Leppard sounds exactly like Def Leppard. If you like them, good. If you don't like them, good. What's the point of describing how they sound to someone who hasn't heard them? Is it for marketing purposes? Gatekeeping purposes? Or is it just because people like to try to sort things into neat and clear categories?
@@phoenixgirl70 But it ends up being a weird circular argument because if you have a band that you can fit into four different genres, it describes very little about what their music sounds like. Or even within one genre, you can say someone's a pop artist so that's what they sound like, but that doesn't mean that Bing Crosby's sound has much in common with Taylor Swift's sound just because they're both pop artists. Sure, their careers are 90 years apart, but they're both pop. I'm old enough to have heard of emo music before I actually heard it, and once I did, I was surprised that it was straight up rock, as far as I can tell. Meanwhile, no one calls Def Leppard an emo band even though they sometimes write about bringin' on the heartbreak and whatnot. None of the genre labels have any consistency, which is why I tend to zone out when people start debating it.
Unrelated to the above, but this made me laugh: I came across the newest Extreme release "Rainbow" just now. Mr. Cherone is brazenly rhyming maybe, baby and, wait for it... crazy (!!!) in the chorus... something that would never have stuck out to me before but I can't seem to shake now. And I can't decide: Does the fact that this is Extreme make this rhyme okay or not? Not sure what the rules are here..... 😅
Yep. I just saw it too. Had to rewind that part of the song to make sure I heard it. And even though it doesn’t bug me the way it gets JH, I still made the JH “aw shit” face when Gary sang it.
I'd never heard of them till earlier today where I saw a clip of the lead singer behaving like a prat on stage because the audience weren't giving them the reaction he expected. What an arse.
