Today we're installing a Manager 30 fuel pre-filter kit in the Dmax to give the engine an extra layer of protection against bad fuel. This is a must-do mod for any diesel engine, particularly modern ones as bad fuel can literally destroy an engine.

I would have switched things from 1& 2 to 3 & 4 that were blanked off .

Yes certainly a great addition to avoid issues 100% agree. I on the other hand went to a secondary finer filter following in line from factory filter. One thing I would recommend to anyone doing this is: Install filter into additional filter housing, connect hoses to all but factory inlet, then prime system allowing excess fuel to run through entire system & drain into a bottle. I did this prior to connecting to factory system. I was totally gobsmacked how much crap came from rubber hoses, filter assembly & obviously the filter, being mine was secondary that shit would have gone directly into my common rail, may have been detrimental. Hence now, every replacement filter gets bled prior to connection into system.

Another excellent video from you. You are one of the better presenters out there. I think the second filter is a no brainer really but I’m not sold on catch cans…….yet. Theres a lot of varying opinions on them, both good and bad. One suggestion, I run F10 additive in my diesal and petrol vehicles and I’m convinced that it is well worth while. Check it out, that or Diesal Doctor. .

Nice work mate! No brainer mod this one imo, the bowl is an easy check, saved me on my cape trip as one of the fill ups must have been a bit dodge, easy to drain 👍

Great video. This was the first mod I did to my 4wd. One tip. Get rid of the water bowl at the bottom. You most likely can’t see it and the seal kits for them cost $25-30. I ended up fitting their water alarm kit as an extra backup and it’s just a sensor that screws In the bottom.

It’s one of those preference/peace of mind things really. The factory filter ‘should’ be perfectly fine, but personally I’m all for having all the protection I can get when travelling to more remote locations, and there’s no downside to a pre-filter. 🙂

Wouldn’t bother unless I was going to more remote places…. You don’t see people fitting these things to diesel cars etc.. just 4x4’s….. but I also question what do the trucking / mining industry use / follow?

Good work. Did you also fit a catch can? I can't remember if you've done it for the D-Max already.

Isuzu service schedule does not change the fuel filter until the dash light illuminates. A prefilter does help reduce water and rubbish. I regularly check the fuel filter bulb and it is easy to drain off any water when you see it. I also installed a Provent catch can. In the last 50k km I have drain off 1L of waste oil. Isuzu has no problem with these modifications and it does not void the warranty. Isuzu will install these on your Dmax from new if you ask them.

Nice work, another option could have been 90 degree Speedflow fittings with the barb which would screw into the adapters provided in the kit.

Given the original filter is a finer filter than the pre-filter I can't see the benefit of the additional complexity of this pre-filter. Carrying 2 factory spare filters would seem a simpler and wiser choice, especially given the original filter will be the one to provide the dash warning if there is a problem. Otherwise you will need to carry 2 original filters and 2 for this latest filter so you can change them while stuck in a remote location.
@4WheelingInNSW
@4WheelingInNSW 18 дней назад
I would say in response to that : "Given the original filter is a finer filter than the pre-filter I can't see the benefit of the additional filter" ... The idea being the prefilter helps minimise how much contamination gets past the only filter in the line otherwise "the original filter will be the one to provide the dash warning if there is a problem" ... Sometimes by then it can be too late - on Tyler Thompson's most recent clip, they killed a Triton going through deep muddy water in Barrington tops. Yes the factory filter caught a heap of murky crap however whatever it didn't catch, clearly made it's way through and killed his engine. It's the fine stuff that is the most damaging. And someone said about "30micron filters are for water separation", water can be the most damaging to a diesel engine too. You get too much water in its guts and its hydraulic lock time. $ 10,000 - $ 15,000 repair bill straight up. Repairs on modern common rail is very expensive - kind of open cheque book until they and a resolve. I think it's more piece of mind that at least when remote touring after a refill at a servo that may not have the freshest best diesel, you're minimising the amount of crap that can potentially get through. Bit like a barbed wire fence in front of your security mesh fence 🤷

One incident by a youtuber who enjoys and promotes extreme 4WDriving does not make a pandemic. The risk of water and other contaminants in your diesel fuel is very low and much, much more likely in a vehicle that hasn't been driven for a while. Diesel in Australia is in the top 10 countries in the world for quality and the number of fuel stations that are in poor condition is exceptionally low. You are more likely to get crook fuel from a mate who has stored it in a rusty jerry can for too long than from a proper supplier of fuel. The people who do extreme stuff may benefit from it but 99.9% of 4Wdrivers will get no benefit. Best protection for your engine is to halve service intervals when you do these trips and change your original equipment or aftermarket air and fuel filters regularly at the prescribed service intervals, or more frequently if conditions warrant.

@@ianhancock8708maybe in the cities, but where I live that’s not the case. I run a cheap n simple Delphi seperator before my factory filter. $120, and mate I’m changing filters on the Delphi a couple of times a year, and drain it a few times too. I wouldn’t run a vehicle here without it.

Personally it's the water separator part that I consider the important bit, the filter is meh but visually checking and clearing water is a big thing
@chrisc7146
@chrisc7146 18 дней назад
It’s my understanding that 30micron filters are for water separation, not really small particles. This is the filter I wanted but was convinced that the water alarm version was better. After a few years I’m happy I listened and got the alarm. I like the idea of seeing the bowl as opposed to relying on an alarm but realistically I’m not going to pop the bonnet every day to check it.
@bentheguru4986
@bentheguru4986 12 дней назад
30 micron was/is the standard for non-CRD engines. DI engines can handle somewhat dirty crap and keep on trucking. Water will pass through 30 micron. CRD usually run 1-2Micron wich will block water as well. The Pre-filter here has a glass bowl to allow users to see the water in it.

30 micron pre filters are a waste of time, they don’t filter anything worthy, and the factory is a 10 micron already. The only thing these are worthwhile for is if you get the electronic water detector assembly. Either way they void warranty
@4WheelingInNSW
@4WheelingInNSW 18 дней назад
They don't void your warranty if fitted pre-factory filter though, only after. And even if they did have an issue, it wouldn't stand in Fair Trading / Court. I guess many people still fit accessorises and aren't concerned about voiding their warranty so I'd prefer to protect my engine at the potential cost of my warranty as opposed to a lift kit or bullbar voiding it ... if that makes sense. 👍

Pre-filters are great idea in some cases but can also help kill your engine if you don't do homework. Example: everyone loves to rag on the ZD30Di in the Patrol and Navara but fail to notice these bloody filters. Every time I see a dead injector pump, I find these types of filters sitting inline. Injector pumps are not designed to pull/suck fuel from the tank let alone through multiple filters, especially if you are that special kind of muppet who puts a 2 micron in. These engines must have a lift pump installed. The VP44 for example is designed to have 1BAR (14PSI) of positive pressure at the pump inlet. CRD engines have a pump designed to boost fuel pressure to stupid levels but again, there are designs that are not designed to suck, do your homework before trusting RU-vidrs and their "ExSpurt" qualifications. This video is a great example, "I do because others have done" without actually knowing or understanding. Research your fuel system and not just from the manufacturue of the car.... Number 1 reason the VP44 in the Nissans die is from having to suck as Nissan ignored the specs for the pumps and chose not to run lift pump.
