I've red one comic about a princess who disguises as a maid and an emperor and it's exactly like that. Because she didn't complain about doing her job and give her friends some cookies he's like "oh my goodness, she is impossibly kind!!" But what makes me drop that comic is when there is a fire incident. The chic just notice the cause of a fire and the footprint and ML were like "how did she do this, she is so clever!!" .... You're telling me 5 crown guards that were in there and investigated for several hours didn't notice that!? You should wonder why are you so dumb!!

Saruda PPH omg That first example grinds my gears. She’s not even being complimented for who she is, because as a princess, no dip is she gonna not complain about her work. She chose to do it over being a princess for a couple of hours. If she had been a maid from the start, she probably _would_ have complained, so it belittles the work of other maids and doesn’t even compliment her character. Ughhh

RE: Bringing Down the Duke My English teacher in secondary school's mum was legit one of the first women who went to Oxford uni having been given a scholarship. She arrived from China and they didn't want to accept her as they thought from her name that she was a man - they offered her a spot at UCL. She declined it and said she was going to Oxford as she had earned her scholarship and they let her in. We had an assembly once where he told her whole story before revealing that it was his mum's, she basically hitch-hiked from China to Oxford for her scholarship and still had to bully them to let her in. Particularly cute was that she managed to get a plane ride across India by agreeing to deliver a toy to this important guy's daughter. It's a cute story and now you know it too :)

Somethings I have found in many books with supposedly "feminist" plotlines is that the authors make the character feminist, until she finds a guy she really likes and then its just: "my own indipendence who? having fundamental rights what? only after I banged that dude and given up my whole personality and my purpose to be with the mediocre protagonist who needed 500 pages to understand that women are also human". I just feel like authors lose the intergrity at the end because they still want the classical love story (which is fine, I enjoy those very much) but they dont know how to weave that into a plot where the womens indipendence is central. It is even more sad because most of the times, the dude could give up just a little and then every thing would be fine but no....the girls usually get the shorter end of the stick sorry for this little rant, it just bugges me and i find it in soooo many books. Why is it so hard for someone to not write a selfcentered male protagonist and a women who doesnt lose all her convicton upon meeting him. This trope does not do anyone justice, neither men nor women

I get what you mean, there are books that weren't promoted as feminist that showed much more narrative consistency and character to the different types of women they portrayed, and I've read books where it is promoted as feminist/ the protagonist identifies as feminist and either their definition of feminism is weird or they are inconsistent without it being addressed in the plot. It seems some books are only marketed feminist as a gimmick. Though the book I found the most annoying was the one where the woman kept repeating how she was a feminist tons of times and how she shouldn't do things that she wanted because she's a feminist and apparently that meant being single for life and denying herself the love life she wanted (and could get because the guy was interested too and already made concessions for her when she indicated she was interested, while she made none, went back and forth in what she said while demanding more from him and yelling at him for listening to what she said instead of reading her mind). But I get your frustration with inconsistent characters. Though I'm lucky I usually seem to get good books, a lot of the books I've read when young had great characters with interesting stories though they usually didn't really have romance, or more as a subplot. Wise child by Monica Furlong was one of my childhood favourites, I'll have to reread that.

I'm pretty sure the fact that Montgomery refused to even consider proposing to her was part of his character arc in learning how to give up the duty and responsibilities of being a duke for living life like an actual human being. Or easing up on his strict ideas of social roles, which is how he goes from rejecting to supporting the suffragist movement in the end. I loved that book to bits, so I'm really glad you mostly liked it! 😊

Exactly, I agree with you so much. I felt that Sebastian wasn't extremely against them. if he didn't have to get Montgomery Castle and wasn't part of the voting campaign, he would supported them quicker than he did. He even said that men who don't own a property can't vote. Obviously we see him getting bolder and more free because he fell in love, and he realised that the things he is bound to aren't always right and necessary. I felt that the book was incredibly realistic, it showed the social class dilemma pretty well ( he had a lot to sacrifice from his reputation to his castle and job as the Queen's advisor). And I liked the idea that Annabelle can be both independent and married to the love of her life. She thought she was protecting him for his own safety because he can lose everything he has if he marries her. Love certainly does make people more free and bold. To fall in love is to take risks, and they (the characters) did and succeed in the end. I love this book ❤️

Oof I gave that book 2 stars 😂 it was well written and I def enjoyed both boys getting to know each other but for me (when it comes to same sex relationships) I hate when the main focus becomes 1. Trying not to be outed and 2. When the focus becomes not on what both love interests thinks of the other (which is juicy) BUT how the entire world thinks of them and hyper focuses on their sexuality/relationship. It just becomes a little too realistic and therefore not fun since romance is supposed to be about escapism and in that situation I would be so anxious I couldn’t even enjoy falling in love 🤷‍♂️

I recently started reading a book called Every Heart A Doorway, and I totally expect Ten Thousand Doors of January to be whimsical like it from the title. Might read it next to compare. (It's about a girl who returned from another world ala Alice in Wonderland style and gets sent to a boarding school with in built therapy about figuring out how to move on with a normal life and accept she probably can't ever go back)
