Saw one instance of a guy who did the initial pressure test, no air leak. Started to fill and his loop started to leak fluid. Drained, check checked O-rings, and for burrs on the tubing, all of which were fine. Did another pressure test but let it sit over several hours with a time lapse camera. It revealed a very slow air leak. What the guy deduced was one of the pipes he cut was literally no more than 2mm too short. Cut and bent a new tube that was slightly longer, which did fix his problems.
@johnpellarin3269
@johnpellarin3269 Год назад
this is exactly why i was going to suggest a longer leak test. plumbers will generally leave it for 24-48 hours depending on if they are running water lines are gas lines. because sometimes it takes it longer to leak than you would realize.

As someone who works in air conditioning, 15 minutes is not enough if you use that simple gauge. The concept is awesome though for PC'S
@Mortlock2204
@Mortlock2204 Год назад
We use this for Hydronic systems all the time. I strongly recommend waiting a full hour to be absolutely sure. Also! Take a picture of the gauge before and after; if the needle moves even a little, you’ve got a slow leak somewhere. It’s also a good idea to get a leak check compound like Snoop but applying it in a PC will be tricky… CueTip maybe? *EDIT* For anyone curious, over pressurization will break your fittings/tubing. If you go over only a psi or two, you’re fine but if you max your gauge, you’re asking for it lol. These PC valves are most likely nowhere remotely near Swagelok quality so don’t push your luck. Happy building!

Alternative - Fill the loop with novec fluid, yes it's more expensive, and requires some additional components, but it is electrically safe, and non toxic. Fluid cooled systems tend to be high end highy value, so is £60 worth of safe fluid and additional parts that bad an idea??? And it won't corrode, gunk up or ever need servicing.

Handy tip! But it also highlights why I've never bothered with water cooling. The extra maintenance and points of failure just aren't worth the hassle. I haven't overclocked a CPU in years, so give me a set & forget air cooler over a water cooler, any day.

Ditto, I'm still rocking an old Zalman air cooler with my i7-9700K, a CNPS9900MAX I got way back in 2010. I had to replace the fan because the original proprietary one was slowing down over time, but other than that it's been practically maintenance-free and still cools like a champ. It's even got RGB now, since I modified a Phanteks RGB fan to fit instead of getting a replacement from Zalman.

For anyone wanting to use these, most of them will leak after a use or two. That's why using the drain valve is perfect. You can just shut the valve when it's up to pressure. When the time comes, open the valve and check if the pressure remained approximately the same.

I'd give more than a few minutes, 30 minutes to an hour. Here's the reason: unless that dial indicator is high fidelity (there are some, but they're stupid expensive) you won't notice a failing system in a 10 minutes, not on that dial. Leaving it longer (AND MARKING IT, very important, with a piece of tape) makes you certain beyond doubt.
@Jayztwocents
@Jayztwocents Год назад
You absolutely CAN find a leak in 10min. The needle almost instantly starts to move. The volume is FAR too low to leak and NOT move the needle
@2EXTRM
@2EXTRM Год назад
um , uh actually... lol you're sort of right but not for the reason you said. you see these dials are analog, which mean they're literally held in place by the pressure. there is no signal to be read by any dial. if a little air is getting out you will notice the needle moving. fidelity has nothing to do with this. if the amount of air leaking is too small then it will take a long time for that to make a noticeable difference. however, this has more to do with the granularity of the gauge and nothing with "fidelity".

Full custom loop will only leak if a) not leak tested like shown here or b) malfunction. And guess what - the latter also applies to AiOs. AiOs are stupid. A proper modern Air-Cooler will perform en par with an AiO and will be the safest in regard to malfunctions.
@Jmandude5

@MrSpinkser
@MrSpinkser Год назад
@@Jmandude5 That’s a legitimate reason I can absolutely understand. Nothing against AiOs as long as you are aware about the added maintenance needs and point of failures (compared to an air cooler that is). So my first ever total water cooled system leaked bad. Thankfully I was using nonconductive coolant and the only thing with power when it happened was the pump because I knew enough to not power up the actual system before I knew there was no leaks and the lines were filled. Though because of how I built it I could not easily run the loop outside of the built system. Leak happed around the radiator in the top of the case so it got all over everything. Wiped everything down with about a whole roll of paper towels. Found and took care of the leak. Cleaned some of the components with alcohol and let everything dry out for about a week before cleaning with alcohol again. The motherboard was stained blue a little (same for the wooden kitchen table) from the die in the coolant but I ran that computer for about 6 years after that and then gave it to a friend when their computer died and I was upgrading. They used it for another couple of years before they eventually upgraded.

The recommended change rate is no more than one line in the first 15 minutes. This is typically due to the expansion of tubes and similar factors. Please don't misunderstand it as one line every 15 minutes. 😂
