@stevelux9854
@stevelux9854 3 года назад
Carabiners are the way to go for the small varmints. However, when it comes to bears there really isn't much you can do without spending many thousands on the coop. Should have turned the grain the other way on the lids. Those slots being horizontal will hold water/snow/ice and tree debris and will rot faster. Or, just add extra coats of sealant to help them to last longer.
@catherinegrace6406
@catherinegrace6406 3 года назад
@@stevelux9854 I agree.. the Grizzly will turn that coop upside down..that’s why I believe in being able to pen up all your animals in a barn at night and especially on freezing cold nights..

Just a suggestion take it for what it’s worth. That large access door you might want to look into a stronger lock. Gate hooks are easy to open and the chickens become lunch in a box. Voice of experience. Stay warm. Bruce from Mason Michigan
@earlhollar1906
@earlhollar1906 3 года назад
What would you suggest? I was going to suggest I bolts with threaded cylinder carabiner style latches in two different spots on the door. But let's wait and see what the electric fence is going to look like, that may take care of a lot of perimeter issues.
@bnewton5922
@bnewton5922 3 года назад
@@earlhollar1906 I did just that I used a carabiner hook. No animal is going to open that. I do agree the electric fencing will help on the perimeter but the door is where I am concerned. Hopefully they will figure it out. Take care Bruce
@davekeeping2814
@davekeeping2814 3 года назад
you will need bracing on those lids so they don't curl up. Also put rubber on the hinge area so the snow don't fall in there and helps with the draft for the chickens.

Good frosty ❄❄❄ morning from New Hampshire! 💝 Valentine's Day was also our anniversary. A shout out to Mike, the owner of The Kitchen, for making us take-out shrimp & chicken scampi and chocolates for our special day. We continue to shelter in place on the farm and that was the first fancy dinner in a year... Mike and his crew are an awesome part of our rural community! Your chicken coup was a romantic Valentine's gesture 💕. One the whole family will enjoy. I wish we had that electrified chicken netting back in the 1970s! We get fresh farm eggs delivered to our main farm every Friday. They have gorgeous dark orange yolks and are deliscious! As a retired corporate Senior Buyer, I want to applaud you for the way you support your sponsors. I enjoy seeing you using and enjoying the products that directly relate to your lifestyle.These days, I often rely on the opinions of You Tube homesteaders and carpenters. I just bought a jigsaw to make bird houses, after carefully following some of these video projects. You Tube can be a wonderful educational venue. You and your family are going to hit the ground running this spring! You are well on your way to living what I feel is the ideal lifestyle for the future. It can be done on many scales, from Victory Garden lots in the cities to chicken coups in suburban back yards. Just like my grandmother's day when times were also a challenge. ~ Diane

My barnfelders are much larger and friendly giants with sweet temperment and lots of feathers and lay big brown eggs. My Barnfelders do not cackle. I live in the city so cannot have a rooster But no worry because if I do not go check the coop when I hear the Older Bantams cackle then I will find a Bantam keeping the eggs warm. We live in the Carpathian Mountains and have some viciously cold days and nights. Our chickens need protection from wind. We covered the bottom two feet of the walls of their run with plexiglas sheeting. Without it, their just hang out in the coop and refuse to even come out to eat and drink. We also put a tarpaulin on the north side of their coop for the three main winter months. Chickens are cold resistant, but they cope badly with harsh winds. I like the small door for you have for their coop - it will keep them draft-free. Another point, put some fairly large tree branches inside the run, something like the top of a small tree with branches going in every direction. Chickens need entertainment - they will thoroughly enjoy different level branches as perches to jump on and off (and also escape from a bully). A simple floor isn't enough.

Happens every time... ppl commenting before watching. This isn’t their time building a coup, and planning for predators. There are some first time things that they are doing out there, but the chicken coup isn’t one of them.

I hope that you get the girls a couple of heat lamps. I think the cat is wishing that he had a chicken. Do not get candy from Japan; you will be disappointed. You are so lucky to get so many gifts. Good to see you and glad you pet world is growing.

When the chickens stick their heads through the wide mesh, they may lose them. I already had a shocker wire set up around the coop but that didn't stop the foxes. I added 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth right over top of the fence fabric for the lower 18 inches of the fencing. It has worked so far for the past 3 years.

Just thought I’d let you know, that ALL of that “German“ candy is available in Canada. When the border reopens you can just come up and get some at pretty much any grocery store.

They can mine are in a pen like that, they also free range in the winter, I still receive a good amount of eggs and I live in Michigan with lots of snow.

@@watcher2906 I never thought about other animals living in the wild and they survive. I guess the chickens heart rate is high enough to keep them warm. Thanks for the info.
