Yeah the story went all over the internet and vilified his friends. Turns out it was all lies. His friends were awesome. Mistakes made w/ emergency satellite devices for each group? Sure. But he's got great friends that helped him. I can tell you as a solo hiker there last weekend I made mistakes too. Not critical but I got lucky. The Grand Canyon is the real deal. It's worth it though.

And generally, everyone should be hesitant to vilify others based on unconfirmed rumors or fourth-hand stories. In the past year, I have seen thousands of people vilify one person - online and in person - for something that I know 100% that person is innocent of. People are insanely quick to grab their pitchforks and torches, and their righteous indignation completely eclipses any truth of the situation or even basic morality.
@brianhourihan5613

The problem was that this wasn't an "unconfirmed rumor". It was confirmed to be accurate through the sheriffs department, and reported by official news sources. Which is much worse.

Look at two of the victims in the Idaho murders. It didn't take but a NY min for people to descend upon their bfs and accuse them each of committing the murders. They had to shut down all their social media accounts because of the threats and people scrutinizing everything about them and their lives. One of the victim's parents (Kaylee) had to make a public plea for people to back off and leave Kaylee's bf alone. One person gives themselves permission to try to ruin someone's reputation and it becomes a mob mentality. They don't realize they're not immune from having their lives turned upside down in the blink of an eye in just the same manner! Some people have to get a life!

I recently listened to a video on the tragic story of the Halloween crowd surge deaths in Korea, and people online unjustly blaming people happened repeatedly with that incident. Certain people in the video of the crowd were identified, mobbed online as someone said they yelled “push” repeatedly, then the person named responded with his train ticket and other evidence showing he left the area long before the rush started and so wasn’t even there, let alone yelling “push.” This happened at least 3 times….online mobs declared that someone did something that worsened the situation, then they were attacked online, then that person can prove definitively they didn’t, then the online mob moved on to the next. So yeah….a good idea to wait for better info. I don’t agree with the idea that all news media is bad and manipulative, but it definitely makes mistakes when trying to be first or in hoping for a more exciting story.

Thank you for making the story corrected. Unfortunately, that kind of thing can happen. My son was on a Masters Program overnight hike into the Grand Canyon. The graduate assistant in charge CHOSE to hike with her boyfriend faster than the rest of the group the next day, so they could "get back to Flagstaff to a party." My son, an Eagle Scout, trained in first aid, if needed, and hiking etiquette, remained with the 2 unprepared hikers, even carrying one of their backpacks along with his own, back up Bright Angel Trail from Indian Well. I thought the professor who put the grad asst in charge needed to know, and that grad asst should have been reprimanded or fired!!! Everyone got back safely, but the grad asst was perturbed that it took them so long...!!! Brother...it happens!

If I were one of the friends, I would sue the Sheriff's office honestly. In order to at least have an official and lenghty public apology and explanation on why they published false story. They probably didn't do this on purpose but damage has already been done and maybe next time they'll be more careful about what they write on the internet. The friends literally tried as hard as they could to save their friend, only to receive hate.

"Do not attribute malice when ignorance can also clearly be attributed". Something I think can be applied to many things in life. Good on you for using your platform to help set the record straight about this story! It's so easy to get lost in the headlines at times and forget that real people are facing real scrutiny over them, deserved or not. I can only imagine what the friend is feeling right now, knowing they had to hike 3 or 4 miles ahead of a very injured friend with the hope of MAYBE catching up to another group to get some help (which must have been agony in itself), to only then see news stories and hurtful comments about them saying how horrible of a friend they are for "continuing backpack adventures" while friend was in need. Smh awful. I hope everyone involved is okay!

Probably a little “telephone” someone misunderstood and spread the story. Technically he was alone for a time but not left behind. The rest of the group would have to continue on after the medevac came and being have way into the trip the timeline was probably tight. I love your ‘hiking gone wrong’ type stories. There’s something really compelling about things going awry for regular folks doing things that so many of us enjoy, and count among our happiest moments. This original story going viral illustrates that many people were drawn to the story. I would guess that most of would rely on our companions to help us find help in a situation like this, and the idea of our friends being uncaring and selfish, choosing to go on with their holiday plans, is appalling. I’m also fairly confident that the correction story won’t get even a fraction of the attention of the incorrect story. I think it’s cool that you came out with the truth. ❤

So good that you set the record straight about what happened. It seems to me that people who are quick to assign blame to others don’t consider that they really don’t know the whole story of any news item, which are usually headlined with words that can bring in the most viewers, without all the details of the the event. Easy to blame others without remembering all the mistakes we have made in the past that were probably just as “wrong” as what others are accused of.

I had a similar shite show with Vail Search & Rescue back in 2017 backcountry snowboarding the minturn mile . My friends didn't bail on me , but went to get help. I was stuck in a really terrible area with snow up to my neck and broken board & bindings ... 3:30-9:45 at night back in January of 2017. I spent hours digging myself out only for tons of snow uphill from me caving me back in. By 9 I couldn't feel my legs or arms anymore , cell was frozen and I couldn't stay awake . They found me right as I made my peace with my maker and closed my eyes . 9 S&R volunteers & my friends track me 9 miles off location and saved my life . The S&R guys told the vail paper my bros bailed on me to go drinking?! It was actually printed and never retracted ... bastards

I'm sure there's a reason, but I'm kinda curious why he wasn't able to continue hiking if all he had was a dislocated shoulder. A few years back, I dislocated my shoulder and fractured my clavicle (collar bone) in a dirt biking accident and I managed to walk myself and my bike back to my truck that was a little over 2 miles away, and then drove myself to the hospital. (Note: I was not able to load my bike back onto my truck though, and I wish I had thought about that before wasting all that extra time and energy walking it back to the truck considering I just ended up leaving it there and having a friend pick it up for me). Regardless, glad this fella was okay... and I'm sure his friends appreciate you help clearing their name. Keep up the great work, Kyle.

Coming across a random hiker you’ve never met before that is legitimately injured beyond the point of independent travel automatically requires immediate attention by any and all healthy travelers to initiate some kind of rescue either by an agency or by a team effort. This is no different than when any healthy vessel comes across a vessel in clear and present danger of sinking in international waters. The crew is mandated by not just international maritime laws to render aid but 99.9 times out of a hundred it’s done out of compassion.

This is a rare case where the media might actually be least to blame. Sheriff's office reported it first, and it sounds like they got their info from SAR. And then everybody online just accepted it without thinking about the obvious problems with the narrative. Somebody either in SAR or the Sheriff's office made the asinine assumption that they made a call at 6pm (which is, it should be pointed out, shortly before sunset), and THEN continued hiking. The original narrative requires you to believe that they waited around for almost four hours before making the call, and then just took off right as the sun started going down (and I can assure you night hiking in Kanab Creek is even more difficult and dangerous than day hiking).

So this is a good reminder to not get emotionally charged by emotionally charged headlines!!! I’m so frustrated and upset with the news using “click bait” like tag lines. Ever since newspapers started the idea of catchy titles was always the name of the game. But in this day and age, we’ve come to treat news with a kind of all reference, and respect as if they were unbiased. In fact, we’re told over and over to appreciate news media. However, news media is still doing the same things they did back hundreds of years ago in writing sensational titles to try and emotionally bring people in to read the article. As someone in the field of psychology, I find us extremely frustrating and manipulative. We tell people oh news is objective and rational and cognitive and yet we push peoples emotional buttons so they will engage. At the end of the day news is there to make money and that is the first priority. I actually don’t have a problem with the search and rescue making a mistake. It’s human to make mistakes. And while it would be lovely if we didn’t make those mistakes, we could be just as angry and vilify the search and rescue but I think the main culprit in this case is the news outlets. They just repeat whatever they get from Associated Press which is the main source and don’t do any work of themselves to verify fact. OK that was a pretty long rant. Rant over.

As it seems there was a similar case in the Alps, but in that case the totally exhausted guy who was not able to hike on way really abandoned. He was left behind and his "friend" went back to the alpine hut and just went to sleep without telling anyone about his companion who luckily was found and rescued by some other hikers. The guy who left was found sleeping in his bed by the way.

I think I may have missed something here…what did the group do after initiating rescue? Did anyone go back to make sure he still had supplies and was still somewhat safe? Non-hiker here, PLEASE don’t come for me 😂

It is very likely that a person from the sheriff office has confirmed that 4 friends and injured person were found from different locations. And that he was left alone. The newspapers have picked up the rest and just made a great story. Also, the details which have been told over the satellite phone to the rescuers, might not have been most clear. So there has been confusion. I also think that they did the right decisions, because the rescue would have taken possibly days without that fastly hiking friend who went flying over the rough terrain for his friend's sake ❤ Hero! ❤

I’m glad you did what you had to to get is story out sooner rather than later. It’s best not to let misinformation percolate once you know the truth. Hopefully your report will gain traction and reverse some of the damage done. Some serious reprimands and suspensions need to be handed out at this police department though.

The moral of story is the you should always carry emergency communication device. A little surprised someone didn’t go back to stay until rescue.

I had to leave behind a friend who got covid on trail. She had a bad fever and was very weak. We made it to a road crossing, but there wasnt any cell service to call a shuttle. Priority number one make sure the said person has water and shelter and is in a safe area. Priority number 2 hike till you have cell service to call for help. It might mean hours away and you dont have the option to hike back to the person. It was such a hard decision to leave, but leaving was the best thing I could do to help her.

So some 50 years ago two of my high school friends went backpacking in the Grand Canyon. They ran out of water soon after starting to hike out of the canyon. One made it out and got a motel room thinking the other wouldn't be far behind. But the other didn't make it out until he was rescued the next day. He seriously could have died. They had been friends since grade school and that trip was sadly the end of their friendship. Good thing there was no social media back then. I always thought they missed the whole point. They both f'ed up by not being prepared for the harsh conditions. It became chaotic and they somehow got separated hiking after dark with incandescent flashlights. Now it is true that friend #1 should have reported his lost friend missing before going to sleep. But if you've ever been that dehydrated, you know that it messes with your head as much as it does the rest of your body. At least they both survived.

People usually gravitate towards “bad news”… I don’t know if anyone remembers the Good News Show from the 70’s or early 80’s??? But it didn’t last as viewership was low. So it doesn’t surprise me when a story such as this goes ‘viral’ on its initial release and then the retraction gets almost zero exposure😞 I am glad to hear that the man is OK and that his friends stuck with him😎

Media gets hate and in many instances, rightfully so, but taking an official statement from the sheriff's office and basing an article around that isn't shoddy journalism. I feel really bad for the friends because, like the hiker said, not many people are going to read a correction, let alone go back to an article itself that has been corrected.
