I would if you'd exist somewhere bit closer to central europe. I think those 5 year old beginers would enjoy winning over mid aged bloke who can't do decent trackstand :)
Dude, I feel sorry for your competitors. I imagine it was similar to those guys who were on the Nürburgring when Sabine Schmitz did a sub 10 min lap in a van.
I can't remember who it was but I'm sure I remember that someone won a downhill event on a hard tail and someone definitely won a downhill event with no chain on their bike (it broke in the first 100m)
I am a fatbike enthusiast myself and I have only ever seen Pat Smage ride like this. Well done man! I don't know if I could ever accomplish this but I know it isn't impossible right?
This video encouraged me to buy a new set of hydraulic brakes for my fatbike, because the 2008 cable Tektro's that I said were "good enough for now" have shown to be ineffective. No stopping when it's an emergency... Only "if the bike feels like it." 😐 Sometimes it doesn't. I want that level of control and brake hold 🙏 You inspire me even more to push my bike skills and equipment further
I loved this. I really like the look of that frame and fork combo. You made the fat bike look like a reasonable choice of those conditions. Nice riding!!
That was the most fun I have had watching a YoutTube video. Can you imagine if you could get a custom-made, trials purposed, fat bike tire, frame built. You could win every wet condition trials competition.
@@Ali_Clarkson with you riding it, a win is almost guaranteed. Either way, win or lose the competition, it would be a big win for all who watch you on RU-vid. You are a big asset to RU-vid, as well as to the sport of trials. You bring joy and knowledge to many people, therefore you are a great asset to the human race.
My fatbike is currently my only transportation, so I ride to work, to the trails, through the trails, on errands, and then back home. It's amazing how agile and fast such a large bike can be... I get double-takes, thumbs up with big grins, and a lot of people that stare in awe at this thicccc fatbike getting hucked around like a BMX, even though it's literally as large as a motorcycle
So in a way what Ali has done has brought a monster truck to a motocross track he’s basically just ploughing over everything and anything in his path can’t wait when he does a street video we are so used to seeing Electric fat bike is on the street But doing street trials is a whole different ball game
FANTASTIC job Ali! You have singlehandedly made the FAT community proud and open your viewers eyes to a whole new riding experience!! Congratulations on first place 😄
your a mad man!! haha, well done on your win!! I still think this would be the most epic bike with a thinner tyre on the front to make it feel more like a extra large 20" trials bike
@@Ali_Clarkson I think getting some type of spacers you could put on the front axle to allow the thinner wheel on the wider forks and lining up the brake disc to the calliper. I think that would be the only possibility, seeing as the head tube will be fatter for the fatty bike. But I honestly think it would transform the feel of the bike by making the front much lighter and throwable, not that you looked like your were struggling..
Haha, I thought you were joking when you said entering a trials comp :/ Nice work, and respect for trying new things that no one else would bother trying.
I absolutely loved this Ali, you made it real in the fact that it was a competitive ride on that bike. I understand the feeling of the challenge and fun, as I have done in mototrials on the old Twinshock class and have a ball just to finish. I also like the camera work done of you in the sections, that is someone who knows how to follow you through and added perspective point of view with a gimbal and good stabilisation makes it.
What a nice video we have here 👌👊 everything was there, competition, challenges, a creative concept of riding a fat bike and most of all your personality and riding style !🎯 Gold job man
hahaha he actually did it! way to go, ali! ☺️ why not? trials is a state of mind. i love that. and thanks again for always adding the fails and not just showing the parts where everyone nails it. it’s so much more realistic and sweeter that way! (and makes me feel a lot better about my own mega fails 😉) awesome job, and congrats on crushing it! turned out so much better than i’d anticipated (:
Nice one Ali well done, could this turn into a fat bike channel? Loving the on one, especially with talented rider putting it through its paces! Great content more fatbike stuff please🙏
Fantastic! Fat bikes still don’t get much respect these days. I won a 9 or 10 race season in open/pro XC singlespeed on my rigid fatbike back in 2016. No one expected it. It was hard work, but the fat bike make it fun!
Awesome Ali loving this vid there budget frames and good fun your showing how useful it can be any chance of hitting some trails on it and see how it feels in some loam or roots and rocks we all know there good on snow and sand too but I'd love to see your take on both of them too how much better they can be in soft unpredictable terrain
Sweet Dude, looked like you had a boat load of fun on that Fattie. Agree that that frame/fork/wheel combo looks absolutely Right. I had no doubt that at a Scottish Trials comp, the Fattie would do pretty good with the traction you would gain from those tyres. ON the subject of tyres, know you're new to this sort of rubber size Ali, so I'll say it again, 1/4 PSI makes a huge difference with them, so get yourself a really good tyre pressure gauge - looked like you could have easily gone to 5-5.5 PSI and gotten more grip.
Thanks Lynx! I think I got lucky with how the sections were laid out but it still surprised me with how well it coped. The tyre pressure felt pretty spot on, I rimmed out on a couple of rocks and without any inserts in I think I'd be risking damaging the rim if I went any softer but I'm well impressed with how low you can go...I had no idea!
Crazy choice? In a world where every influencer tries to sell their sponsors latest and greatest next big thing, maybe but in reality? Well, the result speaks for itself. Well done on the win and the encouragement.
Great job with the riding and the video Ali! Any chance you can get that thing stuffed on a plane and come to ride the Bentonville trials comp in June? Sounds like Carthy will be here! I know my friend Ryan will likely be riding the expert class on his hardtail. I've been going back and forth on if I should ride my 26" or my MTB, haha. Going to be a great time.
I'd love to come but I'm not sure what the deal is with travel restrictions...my situation makes things more complicated. I'm hoping things will get simpler and if I can get the funds I think it would be really cool to come over :)
@@Ali_Clarkson ah fair enough! Funds are always a problem, but I didn't even think traveling may be a problem still. At any rate, really enjoyed the video! It's definitely not helping me with the urge to start saving to build a rigid fat bike to have something between my comp bike and my full sus, though 🤣
@@Ali_Clarkson yeah that make sense. Same here. I've never flown before either, so that didn't even cross my mind. Hopefully that stuff will chill out at some point. I know most of us trials people in the US are looking forward to that comp! After it happened last year, some guys on the east coast managed to get a few comps organized for this year. Sounds like we've got a few of the top UCI guys making it out this year and the Shindig crew sound interested in coming too. Really cool seeing the sport gain a bit of a foothold over here again!
So I'm new to the details of MTB and all that but I have the tires that are a step or two size down. I'm having a hard time throwing it around since I'm not use to all of it. But watching this gives me more motivation to keep them on lol.
I get what your saying but the bike kinda does dictate the skill level. Like last year I entered blue route on my full suss bike and didn't win. I fully expected to struggle but a combination of the conditions and how the sections were laid out meant it coped better than I thought.
Dude, you’ve got skills! 👍 Watching you compete on the fat bike brings me back to the 80’s when we rode the XC, Hillclimb, Downhill and Trials competitions all on the same bike. One question, did you switch out the Lauf fork specifically for this or have you shelved it?
Thank you, I wish competitions all on the same bike was still a thing! Yes sadly I broke the fork within a couple of hours, not sure if it was already damaged or just really didn't like trials riding...a real shame but it really didn't feel great for trials so it's quite nice to be on rigid now
@@Ali_Clarkson That would be a fun contest! Say a two-three day tournament with different competitions but only one bike per rider aloud 😄 So the rider had to do a tactical choice of either a bike they thought they would do at least average with on everything, or super great on some parts so that their sum of points would cover fails on other parts 🤓 Sounds like quite a concept in my little brain 🥳
I've never been to a mountain bike trial but a few vids have made me think it looks like fun. In Motorcycle trials the easy route is often something you could ride on a trail or enduro bike as a bit of an introduction. Is mountain bike trials like this, could I turn up with my 29er hardtail for a first go, ride the easy route as a total novice and still have a fun day? Just been trying to do some googling and not finding much.
Yeah I think they’re similar in that fashion, there’s no age limits and if you just wanted to come and try I’m sue David would let you look at the sections on the date and choose your category then 👍🏻
maybe fat bike sales just dropped? I know they were a hot topic a few years ago and every brand seemed to be bringing out their own version but trends change and now they seem to be pushed less and just left to a core group of riders
I am much more of a flow rider than trials, but I do love the odd tough trials climb. It's a shame where I live there's bugger all competitions of any kind
Hello, Algorithm, if you haven’t ever stood for hours as an observer in dank, wet wild places then you’ve missed an experience ... but that’s not to say it’s an experience not to be missed!
@@garyboyle695 she gets a like now, I was saving my comments for the next day :P Thanks for standing on cold wet (though sometimes warm and sunny) hill sides for me when I was younger mum!
Looking good on the fattie! You can shed off some weight from the tires by switching to Schwalbe Jumbo Jim's. They are at around 1.3kg for the 26x4.8" and 1kg for the 4.0".
This video was edited really well but I would have enjoyed some live talking on how you coped with the bike and about the routes rather than everything beein spoken over afterwards. Cheers!
@@Ali_Clarkson Haha, I would but have no idea what parts to buy. I know motorcycles and next to nothing about bicycles. I just bought the thing brand new in 2020 and it already broke. Boooo
I don't think it's needed for modern comps. Back in the day when they were held in locations like this even at world level there might have been times it was a huge advantage but these days at the highest level they're mostly on man made stuff and heights of jumps outweigh the need for grip and sadly these would just be too heavy
@@groghunter7403 Moto guys have an engine to help though :P Most UCI world cup trials comps are held on man made stuff these days, if they were still on muddy hillsides I think there could be an advantage to a fat bike style wheel but as it stands it would just be too heavy. Some 26" rider do use up to a 2.6" but mostly stick to a 2.5" size
Did you mean trials bike? I got mine from Trials Super Store. Was under 2k and shipped to my front door! Tarty also ships over here from the UK at pretty reasonable rates. A few guys I know have purchased from them here in the US.
