So the lieutenant as you called him is Odysseus's life long friend (at least in this version of the story) Polites (Po-li-tees). He's basically the angel on Odysseus's shoulder while the second in command, Eurylocus (You-ri-luh-cus), is the devil in the sense of shoot first ask questions later. Also these lotus eaters go by the name Whinions. They've actually become the mascot for the fans in this community. Also yes, lotus fruit basically makes you high and care free.

Fun fact: in the original version of this myth lotus eaters were indeed real people! So you weren't technically wrong in assuming so) But yeah, just as previous comments mentioned, in this adaptation they are replaced with these tiny little fluffy creatures called Winions! They are little troublemakers and sometimes accompany gods and other supernatural beings. No reason, they are just cute 🥰
