@@j.j.upright4010 in this song it's mostly Mark Farner singing lead with Don Brewer joining in. Farner has the more soul and groove vocals; whereas, Brewer's vocals come across more as husky. But both great singers who complimented each another unfortunately not in personality. Mark Farner was the backbone of the band.
I truly loved this band. Later I watched “Behind the Music” and realized that “sex, drugs, and rock and roll” was not their problem. Their label was stealing from them. They were great musicians whose record company was bleeding them dry.
Our first daughter was about 3 and her and I were driving in my truck. We were stopped at a red light and this song came on the radio. I started singing it to her, she LOVED it, we were having a great time with the music cranked, her laughing and clapping with dad screaming out the vocals . G9t so into it I didn't realize all the vehicles around us were watching and laughing :)
Late 60s and into the 70s Grand Funk Railroad was one of the biggest rock bands in the country along with Creedance Clearwater Revival, Three Dog Night and Jefferson Airplane
Bands that are sorely missed these days, a product of their time and a classic sound that never gets old. Bands like Grand Funk Railroad will be remembered long after their generation is completely gone, rock bands today wish they were like them.
I saw GFR in the fall of '69 at the Texas International Pop Festival (near Dallas)... they played free afternoon spots as a means of promoting their first album, soon to come out- it was at the beginning of their career, & at that time no one had ever heard of them!!
This one has been my favorite GFR song. I loved hearing it back in the 70s. "I'm Your Captain" & "Footstompin' Music" & "Bad Time" are all really good.
GUYS, Y'ALL LOVED THREE DOG NIGHT. THEY WERE MY NUMBER GROUP BEFORE I FOUND FUNKADELIC, BUT YOU HAVE TO HEAR THEM DO ... ELI'S COMING...1975 LIVE. ALL THREE HAVE GREAT VOICES. THIS SHOW WILL BLOW YOU AWAY, EVEN AFTER JOY TO THE WORLD. PLEASE, PLEASE THIS IS GREAT.
Grand Funk (and Black Oak Arkansas as the warmup band) was the first major rock concert I ever attended. My tastes have embraced many musical changes over the years, but you always gotta go back to your roots! They also had other good songs, like "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)", and they did good versions of 'Loco-motion' which you've reviewed by Little Eva, and 'Hooked on a Feelin'.
Grand Funk Railroad has a VERY deep catalog of great songs and albums. One of my favorite bands of all time. Their name is fitting they put the FUNK into hard rock. Great band.
GFR Mark Farner has such a great voice always. Such a great singer, guitarist, harmonica, keyboard, piano and song writer! The GFR drummer sings the lower vocals, but Mark ALWAYS takes it home! If you like Mark's voice in this song you will also love "Heartbreaker" and "Mean Mistreater", he sings more ballad and great guitar licks! Mark's voice has a great range.
1969 "Inside looking out" . You will love it! Mark's voice is amazing. You will get soul by the mega ton w that 1969 video. Not just a lyric one. Seeing is part of the experience!!
I was fortunate enough in the late 80s to see a concert called "The 70 Superfest" which the lineup was Rare Earth, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, The Guess Who, Grand Funk Railroad and Dr. Hook. Amazing 🤩
GFR did a cover of Little Eva's "Loco Motion" and you reacted to that song. Need to react to GFR's version, big hit for them back in the day! Rock on!!!
Talking of GFR, you should hear their version of Little Eva's "Locomotion". You guys will get a kick out of that one, probably the _only_ cover of that song I enjoy.
Yep one of the greatest American band in the late 60s to early 70s and have a tone of awesome songs they have one of my favorites over the years, To this day they have not been inducted into the rock roll hall of fame which for is a freaking joke, extremely underrated and dismised by the mainstream media garbage
Soooo glad you two finally reviewed *SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL* Oh man, that song gives me chills every single time I listen to it! Glad you both enjoyed as much as I do!
Mark Farner is an underrated vocalist. Then add his guitar playing on top of that, pure talent. That concoction that Don & Mel have going on is not Grand Funk without Mark.
I actually had the rare and grateful opportunity to spend 2 days with Mark Farner in Genesse county. I gotta` say, not only is he talented , he is "the real deal" he`s also a great family man. I enjoyed that time so very much
There was a band years ago, mid to late 80s who used to play this at a local bar where I used to hang out. This song got everyone up on the dance floor.
Such a favorite!!!! Members of the band got "saved" and changed the song to sing about his LORD JESUS Christ!!!! Love it!!!! We sang this song in church!!!!
This was the era when bands out of Detroit were leading the rock n roll world. The fact that GFR are not in the rock n roll hall of fame proves the illegitimacy of that organization.
Southern rock soul straight out of Michigan. I have seen Jeff Daniels (yes, the actor, who still lives in Michigan) in concert. During a Q&A, he said Grand Funk was his fave band as a teenager. He never got to see them live in concert but did get to met Mark Farner, who taught him a Grand Funk riff.
61 y/o grandmother here, brand new to your site. I’m a huge fan of 60’s and 70’music. Watching you enjoying these songs makes my heart happy ❤ my generation had the BEST music and its great to see the younger generation enjoying it as much as I do!
Great job, as usual you two!! In an unrelated matter Susan Jacks of The Poppy Family passed away today here in a suburb of Vancouver. You may want to feature her/them on a future Female Friday with "That's Where I Went Wrong" or "Which Way You Goin' Billy?". Thanks,
So excited to see you react to this one! Next up should be "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home". Another you should do is "Takin' Care of Business" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
they loved TAKIN CARE OF BUSINESS, been waiting for them to do more BTO. . . it was great to watch, maybe you can look it up, they really got into it 😃
I can't let a Grand Funk Railroad reaction slide by without recalling Homer Simpson's views on rock: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YXKmsvRXE4A.html Hopefully you'll enjoy a laugh especially as you're discovering all these great old bands and songs!
GFR…I’m your Captain is definitely worth a reaction. I can’t believe that GFR and Three Dog Night, two huge groups that spanned the late 60’s to the 70’s aren’t in the Rock & Roll HOF, yet the Foo Fighters and Janet Jackson are?? It really boggles the mind🤔…
I so love the reactions where we can all hear Luca (and the girls) in the background. Miss the days when my daughters were that age. God bless you all.
I loved listening to this kind of music back when l was in school and still listen to it with my 4 year old greatniece. We mostly listen to 50,60,70 , and some from the 80's.
Not only great music your listening to that was all over the radio daily when I was growing up but the people, the scene, the clothes, the parties, the hippies, just go with the flow lazy days man it was happening. Such a great time to be alive growing up in the 70's you had to be there... Your digging the tunes which were groovy but being alive in it all and being there is something I'll always remember and smile when I think back to those days... ✌️ Keep on rocking out ☮️
My husband sang this to me all the time. He passed 9 years ago. Seeing you loving this song reminded me of just how much I was loved. Its never just a song.
My Favorite band of all time. I'd recommend a song but they are all good. The most famous would probably be I'm Your Captain. You were talking about Mark Farner's voice and he is an amazing singer. His vocal range is incredible.
I absolutely love this song! And this is why rock is the epitome of music genre. It can take on the characteristics of literally ANY genre and make it better. This song does that with GOSPEL, but blues, jazz, country, reggae … you name it, rock does it. Much love ❤️
Real music has SOUL, CHARACTER, FEELING. It can be blues, country, rock & roll, rhythm and blues, folk...you name it, it feels authentic because it is special and different and there's passion in it.
My mom introduced me to Grand Funk when I was in elementary school. She gave me the 45 to this song. She was a hippie chick from the 60's and 70's. Also introduced me to the Rolling Stones. Cool mom!
Here's wishing you two much luv hope you guys can get 45 yrs of listening to this awesomeness 2💓 We use to dance around with our kids. They loved it too. Now 38,41..... lord luvs ducks.....Cheers
THIS song ALWAYS gets people up on the dance floor when ANY band ever COVERS it in a club or bar, or if a DJ plays it. I know because a local band that I knew back in the '80s and whose members I knew, ALWAYS played this at their gigs. My kids were little then, and me and my girlfriends (we were all married) LOVED to dance, but none of our husbands did. SO we used to go out 2 or 3 times a month to our favorite place "Memories Lounge" where our friends band played so we COULD DANCE the evening away. A lot of "oldies" bands played there too, doing the music of the '60s, so that was another reason why we liked to go there to dance. But "SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL" is SUCH a GREAT DANCE SONG!!!
You guys have got to do "FOOT STOMPIN' MUSIC the live 1971 tour" by Grand Funk Railroad!! That song will take you to church! And you can't sit still when you hear it!!
A heartfelt love song masterfully delivered! When they sang it live, the lyric changed; "When she wraps her lovin' legs around me..." The crowd went wild every time!
I can separate my favorite music into 2 categories, traditional and classic. This one I consider one of my traditional faves. It's played a lot of times at personal and sporting functions as well as most parties in general. We usually play it on our Fridays at our favorite neighborhood pub and us ladies (age 45-65+) will tear it up on the dance floor! If I come across what I feel is a true classic, I will comment on that video. Chow guys! Love your channel!
No, there are *two* lead singers on this song, drummer Don Brewer (who has the lower voice) and guitarist Mark Farner (who has the higher voice). They trade off parts. Jordan and Amber were raving over Farner's contributions.
There is an urban legend about the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville (it's the round domed building on the back of Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" album) that at a GFR concert in the early 70s, the vibrations from the audience participation during "Foot-Stompin' Music" cracked the foundation. That's right, the folks in Nashville supposedly foot-stomped a little too much. No idea if that's true, but wouldn't it be cool if it were?
Drummer Don Brewer sings the first verse, guitarist Mark Farner sings the second verse, and then they harmonize in the chorus and both sing the remaining verses
THE MAN WHO SINGS MOST OF THE SONGS ALSO WROTE MOST OF THEM ! HE DID THE ARRANGEMENT OF SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL ! AND IT BLEW THE ORIGINAL RIGHT OUT OF THE WATER ! LOOK FOR INSIDE LOOKING OUT, LIVE VERSION ! THE ONLY WAY TO ENJOY IT !
You said GFR has a southern soul sound and you're right about that, but they actually are from my hometown, Flint, Michigan and are northerners. I grew up listening to them back in the late 60's and early 70s. Great band.
Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher are Grand Funk. They are from Flint, Mi. (My home town) Phenomenal singers, musicians and entertainers. They are all in their early 70's, and still going strong. LOVE my home boys!! ❤👏🏼❤👏🏼
SRVs friend Buddy Guy does a great version of Some kind of Wonderful as well, since he's a great blues guitarist as well there's more emphasis on the guitar,. Always liked Loco motion, by GFR, fun song
Here's some more GFR goodness: "Mean Mistreater", "Time Machine", "Walk Like a Man", "Heartbreaker", "Rock & Roll Soul", and yes, they do a great version of "Gimme Shelter"
My favorite thing about watching you guys is when you remind me how great a gem I've always enjoyed in passing really is when you actually pay attention.
