I rented a house for 11 years before I was able to buy my own. I always followed the golden rule to leave a place as good as, or better than you found it. I guess that’s why my landlord never raised my rent, and was sad to see me go.

Get a deposit when you rent. Don’t return it when they leave until everything is gone. If you have to clean up at least you get paid.

Yeah renters are a pain. They clogged my drainage, cut hole in wall to drain kitchen sink and didn't bather calling me to have a plumber fix it. To many crazy people out there. Sorry about the complain love your channel 👍

I had two rental properties, one of them I sold to the place next door to get turned into a parking lot. It was such a nuisance I didn't mind losing money on the sale. The other one, I'm lucky and have a good renter who keeps the place nicely and pays on time.

Were you throwing away pressure treated wood? The supply is low and the demand is high, you could’ve made a killing selling it on the black market. Lol.

Yep, being a landlord is just too much of a pain in the butt. I always tried to leave a house better than I found it when I was a renter. Worst I ever got burnt as a landlord was my ex wife calling the cops on me for posting a pay or quit notice... Too many headaches.

If your area is anything like my area your house will sell in 3 days. No joke house are selling so fast up here (vermont). My sister is looking. A house went on Friday night. She went to see it Saturday afternoon. By Monday there were 6 bids. They didn't get it. This is not an isolated event. Hoping you sell quickly.

Dumping the extra house is a good plan. Real estate prices in most places is like 40% over value, the shit's bound to hit the fan like in 2008.

I had rent houses. I started selling them . Financing them myself, that way they fix what is broken, pay the taxes, They don’t pay I get it back and sell again. And I get the interest money . Not some bank.

Nathan, fairly new subscriber so forgive me if you answered this. What is the meaning behind the tattoo on your right bicep?

I have been a landlord and wood worker for a long time. Get a deposit. Don't give it back until the place is broom clean. Most of them won't get their money back. The real money comes when you write the book. It will seem like a work of fiction and only another landlord will believe it.

I have a suggestion that will save you a lot of time moving the wind chimes. Use less of them, then drill and tap a hole in each spacer and thread in a thumb screw so you can adjust the wind chimes on the fly without having to take it apart. The chimes will still rotate but the spacers will be held in place by the lock down thumb screw.

We had a rental for a couple years. I was so glad when we sold it.

Like his accent. I had rented an apartment and I left it in better condition than when I first moved in... including removing a giant hair snake that was clogging the shower drain. They gave me back my entire security deposit and were sad to see me go.

From the clip of the push back, you need spikes on the pusher to keep the boards from sliding off of it.

I have rented the places that I have lived and I take pride in making sure that the house is clean and well maintained. I dislike those renters that make the rest of "Good" renters look bad.

Hello Nathan, Love your channel. You, and a few other you tubers, have inspired me move back to Michigan. I'm getting about 15 acres in the beautiful northern Michigan woods. I have a relative who already has a sawmill onsite. Can't wait to get started! Clearing my own land and milling as much of the wood as I can for my home and barn. Just wanted to say thankyou for the great videos. Watching them relaxes me and reminds me of a simpler life. And when I say simpler, I mean that in the best possible way. I'm currently living on the edge of the DFW area in Texas, 7 million people. Is there any pointers you can give me on getting started milling for a living? Or videos/books/ anything that will teach me. PS. I LOVE the intros with Paul Harvey and the man in black!

Well I can tell you this Nathan...being a ex-landlord...I do understand what you're talking about with tenants...but when I was a tenant...I always cleaned up after myself because i always wanted my security deposit back..and I was a model tenant because I understood that it was NOT my home. SO I respected the fact that it was someone else's home...and i was just visiting...

I don't blame you, my rental caught fire because the renter left a candle burning and destroyed my electronic store. Michigan insurance sucks only got 20% of my policy. Too bad about that poplar log, as always a good video.

Much poplar from central alberta canada is rotten in the center..It makes one GRUMPY!

What is the name and purpose of the small circular looking saw (see 08:22) that runs along the side of the log? It appears to be cutting the bark ahead of the main saw blade??

Like one run to the dump is gonna kill em...it's not like they haven't rented a giant panel truck to move anyway...easy side trip.

Yep when our last renters were evicted. I told the girlfriend to put up for sale. Because I was tired of spending my nights and day off. Fixing stuff they’re kids and dogs broke.

I needed a 24 ft long 8x16, I squared it up, nice and clear, then took 2x to get it to my final size. It looked funny then the same thing, rotten except for 8 ft.

I don’t know what the laws are in the area where you live but in Pennsylvania you can charge a security deposit that has nothing to do with the rent. The security deposit secures you against the renter leaving and damaging the place or leaving trash behind. You can have someone clean up after them, pay that person and deduct it from the security deposit. If damage occurs to the property you can have it repaired. Additionally that gets charged against the security deposit. Now there’s more to it than I have written here but if you don’t get a security deposit and you don’t check these people out with respect to a background check and credit check then you do belong out of the rental business. I know a neighbor that has six homes and he’s very careful about who he rents to, gets a security deposit and he follows the letter of the law and he makes money. The house is growing value because the renters are essentially paying the mortgage and so when the value of the house goes up 20 years later and he sells it he more than doubled his money and he had renters for 20 years. Again more to it than just that. It’s a business not a part-time one.

Your video productions are excellent with the camera angles with your insightful explanations. Tennessee is a great state for a sawyer and garden grower. Thanks. When spraying for weeds or insects you can add a little liquid soap (like Dawn) as a "sticker" (surfactant) to keep the weed killer on the plant, increases effectiveness. Use liquid soaps sparingly, especially the high suds type.

There was a giant pine tree on my grandparents property in northeast Wisconsin, loggers wanted to harvest it but my grandfather said no so fast. Well it was the tallest thing around and one day it came down in a storm to reveal it was hollow almost halfway up the tree. It was over 100 feet tall easily and took 3 to 4 people to reach around its base. But the tree was useless when it was revealed to be hollow.

I wish I lived closer to you! I'd buy that poplar off you and make chesspieces out of it!

I was rehabbing rentals last summer. Too much work for the money.

Not all renters are the same. I never had anyone quibble about returning my deposit.

The only thing I can say is that there wasn't a spike or nail in that log. Wasted wood but no damage to the mill.

Do you even need all four of the drag-back fingers on the idler side of the head? Would you ever drag back a board that wide?

We just mill Eastern Red Cedar and when milling ERC you get a lot of logs that are rotten in the middle. It appears that climate change is also causing a lot more stress on trees so a lot more of them are having rot in them.

Years ago, my parents rented an apt. in our house and everything went well for a few families. But then we got one family that we thought we very nice. Never had a problem until after they moved out we found out! My parents had put in all new, good quality roll up shades when they built the apt. Never had a problem until these last people moved out and we went up to clean up before we showed the apt. They had TAKEN every shade and replaced them with cheap shades from the 5&10 cent store!! My parents were shocked because they were nice people! It just goes to show that you never really know people! They didn't rent after that.
