Most guitarist name their heroes and the list is usually the same. EVH, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Gilmour, etc. and those are all great. But the one that I would put up there that made me pick up a guitar is Lynch. One of the guys that made the 80s what it was. He is a total badass.

Years ago around 2007 I wrote MJ a short email and one day later I got his response. I asked if he has any plans to release a guitar DVD to learn his style? He said yes, he had wanted to do that since the VHS era. To this day it does not exist. Lynch released several VHS cassettes. Maybe MJ is not a good guitar teacher like EvH???

@@Dilemma1962, I was stationed in Germany in 2005, my wife was at a doctor's appointment, and I walked around Munich with my 3 and 6 year old in February, snow everywhere. I see a MJ guitar store, not knowing it was Matthias Jabs store. I walked inside, the store was pristine, full of 3,000 euro Frames guitars and engl amps, as well as Matthias signature starts. Matthias was in the store at the time, and walked up to me and my kiddos and he was one of the friendliest guys I've ever met. It took me about five minutes before I realized it was him. He walked my kiddos and I around his store, he talked to my kids. And then he kindly said if I needed anything that his crew in the store would help. Then he walked back over to individuals he was talking to before I walked in. It was a great experience, and I wish I wasn't starstruck at the moment I was talking to him.

I would say that would of been "Unchain the Night" I play that song daily, only because it was the last one I learned. George is the man. It's hard not to butcher his solos. He is so unique, you always know when George is playing.

@@suetruett3812 Hey" I agree with you , just reporting what I read and both Don and George confirmed it. But honestly I would not go to see them now , if you look at their last live performance , it's unwatchable. His voice is so bad that he doesn't even sing , it's more like he's talking through the songs and I've noticed that they lowered his mic so much , that all you hear is the instruments. I saw them a few times in their prime in the 80's and they were great , but it's over now for Don unfortunately!

I can't tell you how jazzed I am to see that I've been doing something George Lynch does without knowing it. I have always done slides in a lot of places where others do hammer-ons, and I feel super vindicated now haha

Great stuff Robert! George Lynch is my favourite guitarist. Love the Ideas/licks that are so fun to play, wish there were 100 more! The "slide" technique is also in the mid-part of "In My Dreams" solo, which is not the easiest to play, but sounds so good. (PS- how there are people who "dislike" this video, or any educational video for guitar is baffling and they really do not deserve any "air time." ;) Looking forward to more 80's guitar from you.

Love those too. Washburn made one similar. They paint it whatever bleed color they want (In this case, red). Then spray it with black lacquer, and hit it with a torch. Then give it a nice thick poly clear coat. Watching this vid makes me want to go plug in my Furman PQ-3. Cheers!

I've been a Lynch fan for 40 years and "borrowed" this sliding lick pretty early but I also tend do to it using my index finger for the slide. For instance, sliding from the 12th to the 11th and back then finishing the lick on the 15th and 17th (depending on what mode you're playing, key, etc.). I've been a studio/session player for 30+ years and put more of that "Lynch Slide" in unsuspecting songs than you can imagine. Works great in Country music. BTW, I've got a 1989 Charvel Predator in the Rainbow Crackle. So '80s! ;-) Great post, Robert. Cheers.

George and Warren DeMartini were fast friends in the early days, and you can hear a lot of similarities in their style and approach to trills, bends, etc.

George was the perfect 80’s and 90’s shredder. He had it all. My favorite guitar player of all time. I love his exotic and outside sounding style of playing.

George was actually approached about using the 2 hand tapping technique that Eddie pioneered and asked not to do it so much. He decided that he would go another direction and capitalize on what he knew and create new and better ways to play leads. This is what became the Lynch style we all know and love. It's harder to learn a George Lynch solo than it is to learn most of Eddie's in my book. Most of my guitar buddies agree. I read about all this in an issue of guitar world from years back. That article kinda made an impact on my own playing. Also, just when you think you've figured out a George Lynch solo you find out that the actual way George plays it is near impossible for most hands to handle. He has a way of manipulating every note and gagging each one for all it's worth and in the end pulls off some of the most killer leads of the 80s.

My favorite part of that solo is the ascending six-note scale with the slide in between on the final note of each figure. That is definitely unique to Lynch and his style and it sounds so freaking good. I've conquered almost every one of his solos and I can't even come close to playing that thing and have given up even trying.

There would be so much to say about George Lynch, in my opinion on RU-vid he is underrated, there is too little talk about him, well done with this video! 😉 More videos about Lynch, playing style, techniques, Lynch scales, music ideas, would be great! He's the guy who sounds (and shreds😄) different in the 80's, a Genius. There's a lot to learn from Lynch stuff, I love how he chooses the notes, the use of diminished arpeggios and always with a bluesy touch. Not least the tone, fundamental said of Lynch himself! Amazing player!!!

Love it Robert! I've slid outside the pattern for decades! Mostly because I was recovering from mistakes, draging a little jazz into rock stuff I was playing. People always thought it was intentional but I'd be honest & just say I screwed up and it was a recovery technique, LOL.... Playing a note above & below, or ahead & behind as I used to see it, of any scale seems to add flavor. A little coriander or cumin where it wasn't expected... Thanks for the great vid man!!

Lynch doesn't use the flat 5 in the blues sense but more in alluding to the tritone to get a sinister sound.

Super cool vid...DeMartini and Lynch are so close in phrasing! Depending on your rhythm ,great Vid...explore all notes,call and response technique is crucial.the vibrato and dark note slide is the key. I say that ,but execution of it in a live situation takes practice..I still can’t do it..but it’s a work in progress..

George doesn't mind if you murder the Into The Fire solo. He's been doing it every time he plays it live, for nearly 40 years. The guy goes out of his way, to change all of his solos into mindless noodling, any time he plays live. And, I'm saying this as a fan who LOVED everything he put to vinyl in the 80's and 90's. He also goes out of his way to NOT shred these days, or use any kind of high gain distortion. He thinks he's Jeff Beck.

Many of my mates say Lynch really wasn’t anything special. Wasn’t that fast nor accurate. Perhaps. But most of my playing comes from George so for me he is the very man that got me into guitar plaing🥳. And sound what he had back in the days was brutal💪

Great layout of the b5 ness that George wears the undeniable crown. His playing has almost influenced me to much that i have to be cognoscente of it. Do you have an avenue where we can send audio back and forth just in the name of keeping the fire. Keeping real, is keeping it fun and enjoying those "moments." It's like crack cocaine. Anyway, don't know if you comment on these or have a platform for interaction, but that would be fantastic. Thanks

I qonder if that slide came from "laziness" obviously hes not a lazy player by amy means. But the slide is easier than hammering on all the time. Less fingers involved. I know thats why i did it on bass.
