Checking wheel bearings for grease is a simple but essential lesson most truckers don’t know any more or have the ability to repack grease or replace break shoes Simple thing to do is convert to oil and it’s far easier for those who have limited knowledge but you can see the oil levels and once done it saves you huge amounts of time and money with breakdowns like this .

I came up on a Tanker that was on fire hauling fuel. I had a Radio in the car at that time got the drivers attention and he was running to an exit the fire department was setup waiting on him. We was east of Columbus, Ohio. The police had seen him and set it up.

This also goes for your average non trucker Joe too... Once you find the right mechanic and even if they move their shop... You follow them, because the alternative can in the best cases leave you aggravated, worst case you have to pay to fix a mistake or get in a wreck.

Justin, you are just like my dad was. My dad could fix and build just about anything. If he didn't know something, he'd be next to the mechanic or worker watching and asking questions. Finally, he'd be the first guy offering help to anyone who he thought they looked like they needed some help. I didn't realize that's why I like to watch your videos so much until today. Hi Justin. If your boys had seen the IR gun and knew how it worked, it might have migrated to their room. My first vote would be Tank because of how he likes the keys and starting a vehicle. Now you more than you did the day before. Have good days!

note, it is usually the second tire that gets the nail or screw. First tire sets it up right for the second tire to get nailed.

Justin, consider buying a CO2 extinguisher also. Good for bearing fires, cools while extinguishing fires.

those bearings were not packed with grease the correct way but better than no grease

I repacked a lot of wheel bearings over the years at several shops. i always put grease between the bearings for extra protection and cooling. i taught the young guys this. they were impressed. those guys at that shop know there stuff.

Now that recycling paper place brought back a memory for myself. Used to work a causal job, many moons ago, working a machine that bailed up paper and carboard. It would then be put into containers and shipped to China. Big money for it back in the day. Good to see, that all things considered, everything ended up working out fine for you. 🙏to you and fam

I would almost recommend converting it to a wet hub, the wet hubs always run cooler and with the clear lens at a glance on your pre-trip you can always see the fluid level.

I just mentioned packing grease in bearing before oil bath in another video yeah a good friend and buddy Steve Aktins helped with a truck I had taught me a lot I miss my buddy his health caught up with him. In heaven now

Something to consider is getting a larger fire extinguisher for a larger fire. I’ve seen a lot of drivers have an extinguisher in the sleeper hatch with a notice saying fire extinguisher inside. By having a larger one you can have it refilled and it ends up being cheaper than buying the small one each time. By having more volume you have a better chance to put it out instead of it overwhelming the smaller one. Any where there’s a larger city there’s a good possibility there’s an extinguisher service business to recharge fire department extinguishers. You should be able to find one through your phone. Hopefully it’ll give you greater peace of mind as you drive.

I live in a rural area in Indiana and very close to me is a trailer shop that I went to for years very good work and very reasonable, you are so right it makes all the difference when you have a good relationship with a local business.

I had a yellow iron as well in school it was my first addiction to fast and loud cars

What a blessing to have that trailer shop so close by in your moment of need! I parked my rig right beside that place one night to take my 10-hr because I was delivering at InterKraft the following morning. Walked my dogs in that grassy area right behind the clinic.

Did I hear that right ? FIVE tires, with rims and a bearing service for 1490$ that would be a steal, others talk about tires being 500-1000$

Cardboard is something that can be recycled many times. Shredded and wet tomake a sluue that is rolled onto mats on screens, dried, rolled up and sliced to size needed. Some is crimped to make the inner core, then glued up to make finished product.

Life is always about the network of people you know.

You can get to much grease in a bearing. It will prevent the pin bearings from spinning. If it keeps getting hot I would just pack the bearing. It will take time to run in also. Grease will get dried out after a while from heat hope all goes well.

If you ever haul for XPO logistics, be careful unsafe loads and getting paid sometimes is a waiting game.

If you’re going to Harbor freight get yourself a heat meter that way you could point it that whatever you’re checking to see what the temperature is from your radiator to your brakes they’re not expensive

I mentioned Gentry and Sons Trucking channel in another comment….their spindle replacement was done differently; a “plug weld”. As far as I can tell yours was a “butt weld”. I think I heard the second mechanic in this video remark about that. You might want to check that out buddy. Best wishes to you and yours Justin!

glad to see you got a heat gun seen a two posts on the video on trailer tire hub bearing repair. have on i used for years for checking on engine missing engine coolant over heat ing and crank gears cam gears.

A good mechanic is hard to find but when you find one stick with them and take care of them, I tip my mechanic a little extra all the time and he will go out of his way to take care of me !

STM in simpsonville is awesome Justin. They are who I bought my roof bows, rivets and roll of aluminum roof when I just changed my box truck roof from translucent to aluminum. Ever need a hand I’m around the corner

Justin, those infra red temp guns are great. Get another for the house, grease temp for frying is the way to go. Cylinder dropping, header is cooler than rest.

If you can hold your hand on the hub, you can bet that it is under 150 Deg. If you have to yank your hand off, it will be well over 150!

Ha ha I bet u was like what it's near my house sheesh. That's good they fixed it and u got new tires. The mechanics are supposed to put new tires and check out the brake pads and rotors and if there not good put new ones on. Kids are happy sleeping in since no school. But they get up and do chores and laundry and cook supper. Jessie is happy the track is having a daily driver race old school shoot out. Which means no pro charger and turbos or nitrous. I am taking my 70: Chevelle and Jessie's taking her 69 Pontiac GTO. We have raced against each other but I am quicker than her (sorry babe) that's this weekend if the weather is good.

Ain't that somethin about the headlights but I got a theory on the newer cars and drivers. The newer cars all seem to have illuminated gauges unlike the old cars. So when you get and fire up the car the dash lights come on and stay on. Anyway a driver used to older cars could look down and see that either the parking lights or the head lights were on by looking at the gauge cluster but with the newer cars that is not the case. I grew up in Bristol, VA off of exit 7 where you picked up that load of chips and the entire state is covered with signs that declare the state law about burning headlights whenever you turn on wipers. Not sure about TN law but you frequently see no headlights on on TN tagged cars on the interstate.

curious why you don't put all aluminum on trailer. knock some weight of unit less maintenance with wheels not rusting and look alot better. a win all around.

You shouldve just converted the hubs to oil, you just need to clean really good all the old grease out and that way its easier to maintain and spot leaks or seals going out. Plus they run cooler on oil

In my experience anything to do with cardboard doesn't pay well

So what's your plan with having the other 3 checked out? Are you gonna swing back to STM to have the other bearings checked out/repacked? Super convenient they are so close to the house.

New and improved is not always better. Sure the self inflation systems save time on keeping tires at the proper inflation but you pay big when a greased type bearing fails and destroys your axle. I prefer the the oil filled hubs and seeing they have enough oil in them. Checking tire inflation is easier than than replacing bearings and axles. Great that the trailer shop is so close to home.

I have a Pontiac GXP it has a 5.3 with a Brian Tooley stage 2 cam and a tune 40 series Flowmasters it's fun I've got up graded axles in it and a manual valve body transmission but the transmission still don't hold up I'm on number three but I don't have a lot of money into it so I kind of beat the hell out of it LOL
