I used to rebuild 2 of these a day back in the 70's. Haven't been a mechanic since 1980 but could still do one of these with my eyes closed. He did a very good job explaining the teardown. That was the easy part. Putting it back together is the trick. TH350 was a very good tranny. I had asked my boss (in the 70's) why he charged so much for a rebuild ($300) since there was only about $50 in parts. He said if it came back under warranty that he could rebuild it again and it didn't cost him anything. We never had a TH350 come back.

The valve-body is designed to replace a shitload of tubes and valves that would otherwise form a cluster of hydraulic lines moving hydraulic fluid here and there in many different ways under different conditions. The "wormwood" patterns on the bottom of the case run in one pattern, and those on the valve-body itself run in a pattern that's generally crosswise to it, and the two are separated by a sheet of metal that separates the two halves, allowing selective connections through strategically located round holes. If you look closely at the valves themselves and the cylinders they pass through, you'll see that as they move, they open some passages while closing others. The valve-body is an amazing design, one so elegant that I suspect that the concept stemmed from a leap of an individual imagination. -- I believe it was in 1940 that Oldsmobile came out with the first cars with automatic transmissions.

In the 70s, the flat rate time for a complete rebuild was 10 hours, including removal and re-install. And waiting at the parts counter.

Always a pleasure to watch an expert at work. In 1977 I bought a new Impala wagon for my growing family, and never had a problem with the tranny, which was surprising. When it came time to change the transmission fluid, I dropped the pan to replace the filter and found that several valve body bolts were loose, and two had backed out until they rested on the pan. Some real winners were assembling new transmissions in those days, I guess. I torqued the bolts and never had a problem.

I did a performance rebuild on a smoked TH350 for a friend of mine, took the clutch pistons to work and shaved them down on the lathe to fit more clutches, except the intermediate, had to clamp that down on the Bridgeport. Add a B&M rebuild/shift kit and bolted to a lowly 305 in a Camaro and it was chirping second gear WOT in drive. That car gets wrecked, I wind up with the trans in my shed, I sell it to another friend and it goes in another Camaro behind a 383 and 2nd gear was leaving 100 feet of rubber. After 3 months the new owner "complains" about ripples in the roof due to the car twisting during hard WOT shifts. I told him to get subframe connectors or a roll cage. :P

This video is full of knowledge, nobody is going to be able to disassemble a transmission so confidently zip zap using air tools and talking as he does it, no searching for sockets etc, he clearly has been doing this for years, I am an HVAC tech and I can see the magazine mechanics coming a mile away, this knowledge is priceless! Everybody should have a Dad or Uncle or Brother, Neighbor like this, you will spend a lifetime trying to learn what he can teach you in short order if the kid was smart! Great knowledge being passed on, that is a great service to everyone!

Hello Hiram. I have a 1976 corvette. All I have done is change the pan and filter. Put a new flex lock dipstick. No surprise the trans has never been torn down. It stays in the garage most of its days. These 350 TH's are built pretty darn good.

I bet if he was not talking through the video that he would be able to take this apart in 20 minutes or less. I am glad he talked because I was needing to learn . Also glad he has some energy in his voice which also helps for the viewer that wants to learn . I wonder if this guy teaches on the side. If not he probably would make an excellent teacher . He is definitely "Not Boring" and not fumbling around while doing his break down. Wish he was my neighbor, I would have fun helping out in his work shop .

Hiram thank you for your extremely informative videos!!! I picked up a 1979 TH350 for $50. It looked pretty rough but my buddy had it sitting in his shed for a couple years, he thought it was rebuilt. I followed your videos and pulled the pan and valve body. I thought it would be pretty bad because the dipstick was gone and water got in. At first glance I was sure this thing was trash ... watery sludge and the valve body gasket basically fell apart. I removed the pump and it still had the blue assembly lube present and all new clutch plates and gaskets. I removed the governor and it was also perfect. I think I'm going to order an overhaul gasket kit with new filter and see what happens. Thanks for all the information, you sir are THE MAN !!!!!
