"It's the most angry song I've ever written in my life", Thom Yorke told Craig McLean in an interview in The Guardian in June 2006. The content of the song perfectly expresses the anger and despair millions of people in the US and Europe felt when the invasion in Iraq started in March 2003, justified with clear lies by the American and British governments about the 'evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq'. David Kelly was a British government expert and former UN weapons inspector in Iraq who disputed the 'evidence' and told a BBC-reporter. This resulted in a critical BBC-report in May 2003 about the UK government and severe government questioning of David Kelly in July 2003 as the supposed source. He was found dead on Harrowdown Hill two days later.
+Tim H-Smith Indeed, there are spooky elements about this story. The fact that David Kelly died (no matter how) is very sad. The way the UK government tried to divert attention from their own lies in justifying the invasion in Iraq, towards a row about who leaked information about it to the press (accusing David Kelly), is quite vicious in my opinion.
Indeed, thanks for pointing that out. 'Death of a Scientist (A Vision of Man Over Machine 2004)' by Mull Historical Society (Colin MacIntyre) also reflects intelligently on the death of David Kelly: "I used to know a man, who burned his silly skin against the state".
It apparently was, until he created this one. Both songs contain the similar kind of desperate anger about injustices done by the people in power. 'I Will' is a response to the warcrimes during the Gulf War, this one is a response to the covering up of government war crimes in Iraq. Thank God some musicians still have the ability to express this kind of anger.
This is how I think songs about specific events should be written: with enough ambiguity that it might not be obvious, so that you can have more than one interpretation of the song. Thom Yorke is a wonderful poet.
"we think the same thing at the same time, there are too many of us so you can´t count" this song is great really inspirational to do something about the situation in the world!!
Don't walk the plank like I did You will be dispensed with When you've become Inconvenient Up on harrowdown hill Near where you used to go to school This where I, this where I am lying down Did I fall or was I pushed Then wheres the blood? But I'm coming home, I'm coming home To make it all right So dry your eyes We think the same things at the same time We just can't do anything about it. We think the same things at the same time We just can't do anything about it. So don't ask me ask the ministry So don't ask me ask the ministry We think the same things at the same time There are so many of us Oh you can't count We think the same things at the same time There are so many of us Oh you can't count Can you see me when I'm running Can you see me when I'm running Away from there Away from there I can't take the pressure No one cares if you live or die They just want me gone They want me gone But I'm coming home, I'm coming home To make it all right So dry your eyes We think the same things at the same time We just can't do anything about it We think the same things at the same time There are too many of us so you can't There are too many of us so you can't count! It was walking to the back down Harrowdown Hill It was walking to the back down Harrowdown Hill It was a slippery slippery slippery slope It was a slippery slippery slippery slope I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness I feel me slipping in and out of consciousness I feel me
When I listened to this clip for the first time, I cried because I felt like I was hearing my brother's word....at that point I did not know anything about the subject of the song....all I can say is right on.... My beautiful brother Nick commited suicide 02/19/2007 and this is how he described his situation....think about it.... I also know that guys don't get told often enough...YOU ARE NOT ALONE & YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
When I listen to this song I get one of the darkest feelings I've ever had. The song itself isn't dark, but the topic...definitely is... Look up the death of David Kelly. "We think the same things at the same time, we just can't do anything about it" So...powerful...
Here I found what I was searching for the long time, you will DEFINITELLY like it, look ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BxFw_iukKT0.html
3 years ago, my boyfriend and I, became best friends with this song and we promised to take care of each other no matter what happens..then we fall in love :) I know nobody cares but that's why this song means so much to me..because you know you'll never be alone when you have your best friend by your side, even when he's not on this planet anymore, thanks Thom for creating this beautiful master piece for your best friend.
This vid was blowing up around the time Bush was in office and the Iraq war was in full swing backed up by the British. I don't think there's ever been a time when so many had such distrust and fear of their govt. This was 14 years ago.
Thom Yorke is for sure the best lyricist/singer of this century. and for so many time. We think the same things at the same time We just can’t do anything about it...
Did I fall or I was pushed... and where's the blood! Can u see me when I'm running... away from them I can't take their pressure, Nobody cares if u live or die... They just want me gone! Undoubtly, one of the songs with a strong wave in me!!!
Hes a fucking genius...i just started listening to Radiohead 1 month ago...I'm 43 years old...i listened to some negative press regarding them and never really checked them out...I am so pissed I missed out all these years..cant wait til the new album...every album of theirs and his solo work are masterpieces..
+mikeisagodd2012 thats cause they had 20 years of the media loving them that it became very fashionable to start to hate them.....but as one journalist quoted a while back, they are the only band that matters, I still think that holds some truth to this day but so many bands have been influenced by them, they can help carry the flag now.
+mikeisagodd2012 Welcome to the insider's club Mike. I'm 40 and been doing Radiohead since 1993. Sorry you missed out, but better really late than never. Wow..you got some goodies to study. Sweet.
The 500 characters alloted by youtube are not enough to express my gratitude towards radiohead and Thom Yorke for the ear ecstasy they have created over the years.
I never realised it was based on such a horrific event. Great song, I love how Thom's lyrics mean something, not like many other bands who just make a few simple rhyming versus that go in one ear and out the other.
he makes one want to look it up. without being condescending, self important or cheesy. great. people often say that what is evident in great art is only the tip of the iceberg, well, this is a hell of a tip.
Plenty of reasons. Great music, great vocals, awesome beat, emotionally evocative. It's the little things, too...the scratchy backing vocals and when the beat and bass come back in at the end. Powerful stuff. I loved this song immediately. This song is about a specific person. If you read the story behind it you may get more out the lyrics.
I think it is questioning whether or not it was suicide, but is coming more from the angle that he was murdered by the government “you will be dispensed with when you’ve become inconvenient” "Did I fall or was I pushed Then wheres the blood?" and “So don't ask me ask the ministry.”
Bro I listened to this album and is the shit, literally an eraser, its so immersive I completely forgot my angst by closing my eyes and listening to it
it looks like hes referring to flat earth and elitist dominance over over and so called minoriy( dubbed by the one eye matrix) controlling those who dare to oppose them who are controlled with brute force be it active but very fucking passive in this songs case!..i have always truly believed that thom yorke with all of his passion and sublime creativity as a composer and musician never sold out to them with himself and radiohead to the status quo alter ego that musicians have to sell to a mind controlled public through the media...Thom Yorke has always been revolutionary with his music and if you know the truth you can here it and see it though his work. Amen Thome:)!
