Thomas Cromwell was one of the most influential figures in Tudor England. Rising from humble origins, Cromwell navigated the treacherous waters of the Tudor court to become King Henry VIII's chief minister. Instrumental in the English Reformation, he drastically transformed the nation's religious landscape. However, his powerful position also made him many enemies. Join us as we explore the intriguing life of this complex and controversial figure.

@HistoryRoadshow I think Thomas Cromwell is one of history's underrated people. yes he was Ruthless cunning . but let's not forget for nearly a decade he was the second most powerful man in England . Accept the king and yet he was from a low birth.

I’m so thrilled by this incredible find! When I was growing up Cromwell had such a bad reputation which was, in part, due to the popularity of the play and movie versions of “A Man For All Seasons” and “The Six Wives of Henry VIII” where he is portrayed as an evil genius who ruins and/or thoroughly destroys the lives of nearly everyone in his orbit. Dame Hilary Mantel’ magnificent Wolf Hall trilogy and the theater and BBC miniseries portray a much more nuanced and realistic Cromwell. The discovery of this prayer book adds to that nuanced view of Cromwell. Even though he was in favor of the reformation of the Roman Catholic Church, especially in England, it appears that he hadn’t completely thrown his Catholic upbringing away. While I don’t always agree with the way that he took care of business for Henry VIII I do think that Henry’s reign would’ve been very different if Cromwell hadn’t been running the show. How I wish that Dame Hilary were still with us. I would’ve enjoyed seeing her reaction to the news about this prayer book. Thanks too for the link. I’m going to watch it later. Thanks so much for these excellent and informative videos!

Great presentation! Thank you so much! He must have known Henry VIII was not loyal to anybody. I wonder if he felt bad about what he had done to Anne Boleyn when he was taken to the scaffold. That was a dangerous time. It seems Holbein wanted to show Cromwell’s true character in his painting.

Cromwell is one of my most favourite characters from Tudor times. The work done to establish the veracity of this particular book of hours as belonging to him truly adds to the interest I have in him - and my grateful thanks to all those involved in that work. Without such dedication our knowledge of history would be stunted. Add to this the paintings and drawings produced by Holbein, and we have such a wonderful record of what the people really did look like. This just adds more “colour” to the subject. Also, my thanks to you for producing this really informative video.

@@HistoryRoadshow Yes, it was an excellent series and the book, part of a trilogy, was excellent as well. Hilary Mantel's view of Cromwell was more sympathetic than history has portrayed him.

Holbein did him no favors, gorgeous book but not a gorgeous prince, "put not your faith in princes." Moore looks lovely in his Holbein portrait, does not matter, both murdered by Henry. Loved Hillary Mantel's Tudor trilogy, Wolf Hall, Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror and Light. Good work historians solving the mystery.

Henry secretly went to visit Anne of Cleves where she was staying on her way to London. He was in disguise so Anne paid him little attention and Henry was furious. Henry's description of their wedding night is so foul that I won't try to describe it. Furthermore, it seems that Anne was ignorant of sex, so in the following nights when Henry came to kiss her good-night she thought that was the extent of marital relationships. All that was required for Cromwell to be convicted and executed was Henry's disappointment in his bride. The same had been true for Cardinal Wolsey because of his failure to obtain a divorce from Queen Catherine. However, he died on the way to London before he was scheduled to be put on trial. Although Anne Bolyn's demise was engineered by Cromwell, Mantel describes him in disbelief when he finds out that Henry wants to get rid of Anne just as he got rid of Queen Catherine little more than two years prior. One can imagine Cromwell thinking it's "deja vu all over again."

@@HistoryRoadshow this is an absolute incredible find. And this is what makes history so exciting! when you find a direct on this undeniable correlation to that individual and people know that book passed through the hands of Cromwell! Also, the accuracy of Holbein as a portraitist to capture that book in such incredibly accurate detail. So this find I would say lends credence Holbeins accuracy and acumen for capturing the tudors correctly in his portraits

Cromwell fell into the snare that men/women of old were warned against by James 2:1 ‘my brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the lord of glory.’ I’m afraid he did reap the consequences of so doing. It might have gone differently for him, and others had he not.

given what a prayer book actually is, and given the life that Cromwell and all the others lived at that time I regard his possession and presumably use of such a thing as pure hypocrisy. after all the only thing his religion prompted him to do was crimes, just like all the others but then i am one of that unfortunate few who regard Christianity to be literally true and the bible to be literally the word of God, and the two - the bible, an the lives of all these Tudors, simply do not add up so rather than the word of God be invalidated we must see the Tudors as hypocrites
@HistoryRoadshow
@HistoryRoadshow Год назад
Do you think that Cromwell would had the book of devotion in a painting if he didn't have some semblance of religious belief? Great point, thanks 😊

@@HistoryRoadshow some belief , yes, IMO, for atheism was extremely rare back in those days but loving his enemies did not come into it for myself as an evangelical Protestant with charismatic leaning having a prayer book is in fact anathema, something i have never have and never will do
