Actually it's for a simple reason, the college gave her cards with only yhe phonetic spelling, and not the actual name for some reason, phonetics I learned phonetics in school for music class but it's certainly not a commonly taught thing, absolutely bad on the school's part, whoever had the idea to do that... brain dead, but the woman is fine

I’m not sure that’s what happened but I could see someone who’s unfamiliar with those symbols stumbling around and producing some of those results.
@@crazyralph6386 Apparently the names were spelt phonetically which means she was stringing sounds together rather than reading names. Reading phonetically can be really difficult since it doesn't resemble any words we are familiar with.

They’re using the phonetic portion of the name card as an excuse. Whoever read the cards also has the normal printed spelling of the names on each card.

Yeah couldn't even say Camp. Probably after the ceremony someone asked her what her summer plans are and she said "Going camping" and nailed that though.
It was a prank by the uni. Staff..obviously!! She was able to read all the first difficult Arab names all right, basically she initially read the first few names of each group correctly, then BOOM.. she INTENTIONALLY messes up the other names so bad. Even the professor beside her didn't try to correct her bc he KNEW It's a joke!!
Imagine spending 4+ years of your life dedicated working towards a degree, and on the day meant to celebrate and reward your hard work the college provides someone incapable of even reading a simple name on a piece of paper.
The speaker did this intentionally. Notice how the POC names are all pronounce correctly, while the non-POC names were all butchered. The names are written BOTH phonetically and in English on each card. This is to prevent this issue in case the phonetics are wrong. Pretty much did this to send a message to all non POC’s and their families.
Why didnt someone else step in and stop this nonsense. An entire graduating class, theur families and professors stood there and let this continue? Wow.
Its spelt phonetically do you not get it imagine seeing "toe-mass-mike-ale-can-e-vary" written on a piece of paper and being asked to piece it together in front of hundreds of people in a few seconds

That’s a small price international students pay having their names mispronounced. I’m sure they are crying themselves to sleep for having their names occasionally pronounced because it was formed in conjunction with a different language. People come here knowing that English is the primary language spoken here, and in the business world. Where it shouldn’t happen is from a university located in the United States. Asian people do it right when they name themselves names like “Joey” and “Betty” as their American names. They don’t b1tch about it.

I call bovine excrement. No way you get those mispronunciations from phonetic spellings. The announcer was either foreign with very little command of the English language or illiterate. Also lazy as she obviously didn't even practice these names in advance or ask for pronunciations. This was extremely disrespectful to these students. As a teacher I did my best to pronounce my students names correctly and had them correct me every day until I said they properly.
As someone who has helped with many many graduations over the past 19 years, I’m telling you whoever wrote out the name cards, set her up. You usually don’t have time to rehearse them. They did not write outs the pronunciations correctly.
The reader was using the phonetic spellings that appear right next to the actual spelling. Even so, phonetic spellings have been used at graduations for ages now. This lady not only had never done this, but had never read a phonetic spelling, or had the common sense to switch to the written spelling. She surely could not have believed some white kid was named “Tahmoomay.” The university sent out perhaps the least competent person they could find.

That excuse is a lie. Thomas. Phonetically, "Tom-Ess". That does not in any way come out "Tom-Moo-May". It's even in the school's name: "Thomas Jefferson University".
It's International Phonetic Alphabet spelling. The guy's name would have looked like "ˈtɑməs ˈmaɪkəl kɑnɛˈvɑri". You try sounding that out when a crowd is laughing at you.
They clearly needed to get someone who knows how to read IPA. It’s like when the cops kept hiring someone to do the ASL for their news conferences and they totally were doing gibberish with their hands

Phonetic alphabet is very easy to read if you know how letters sound. I easily read your example. There's no excuse for a presenter at a college to read that poorly. This is why college is now a joke and accepting weak excuses for it isn't going to make it better.

What’s sad is this person most likely teaches and the students probably can’t understand what she says. My daughter graduated from Mississippi Sate with a dual degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics. she had a chemistry professor who when asked repeatedly a question he finally said goo goo it. She filmed this interaction if the students can’t understand you the can not learn.
If you’re a university professor and can’t pronounce the name Thomas English is not your first language. My youngest graduated from the University of Mississippi this past Friday and they pronounced every name correctly.
@@bluescitygarage the lady literally said sorry and that she would be able to read it as normal. You can look it up, the phonetics were presented in a way that made it hard. She couldn’t see the normal spellings.

Unless things have changed, usually it’s the graduate themselves who write the phonetic way of saying it. How could so many graduates write the phonetic pronunciation of their own name so unrecognizable? And Thomas is literally in the name of the school.
Y’all are mistaking PHONETICS with PHONICS. Phonics is what we learned to use how to read in second grade. PHONETICS is the spelling showing how to pronounce each syllable in a word.
A 6 year old could read the names better..... What was the point of having this speaker. She even seemed uncomfortatble. I get the reason which is ridiculous- how embarrassing for the University and so insulting to the students. Do better.
She was literally to inept to problem solve the basic principle of referring to the phonetic help section when coming across a name that was less obvious than molly... honestly, how does someone gain employment at a university when they have a complete inability to think even slightly laterally???
