Anime: Vinland Saga Season 4 Episode 22 Thorfinn VS Drott, embrace punches for peace. Thorfinn meets Canute after four years and ask for negotiation. Snake and Einar can't stop Thorfinn. #Thorfinn #Canute #VinlandSaga
One thing I really like is that Drott and his men gave Thorfinn the respect he deserved after taking 100 punches. Vikings may be bastards but they acknowledge and respect strength.
Idk if it was intentional, but the vikings in this scene represented what the audience watching this anime. They only cheered for violence and mock the main character, but as soon as they really listened and witness thorginn's resolve, they started to be quiet and paid attention.
The Vikings going from a ruckus crowd to absolute silence. You could hear the admiration welling from all their hearts as they watched on. We don’t have much background of Drott but you can tell taking 100 of his blows isn’t something most of them would even sign up for but Thorfinn did. Drott even WHILE KNEELING apologized and paid homage to Thorfinn. It’s what makes this show so great. The sense of honor pride and straight up testosterone you can feel from these scenes are crazy
If only we were all still like that having that sense of honor and loyalty and respect for your fellow man shit would be way different these days i guarentee it...
@@brokeknucklemcmechanics313 I feel what you’re saying. But in their time respect was earned in battle or wealth. But that honor code shit of warriors I def feel you on. I am super thankful to not have lived through some of the war like ancient times. I’m slightly taller than Thorfinn. I’d get mauled by a group of Viking warlords so quick 😂
@@stuartmccleary Maybe we need to have battles like that and i dont mean for kings and queens or no shit like that i mean against the people that use us like peasents and throw us to the wolves after all these politicians and people that run the world need to be reminded pf who it is they work for...
@@prophecybydefault4708 i can already tell you are perfectly fine with being a modern day slave and or your kids or grand kids beings slaves have a good night
Also very ironic since season 3, the baltic sea arc , has more than twice the amount of action of season 1. Not sure if you read the manga, but the season is Thorfinns new pacifism ideology being put to the test in the real world (outside this rural farm).... against the backdrop of a Jomsvikings civil war and characters from Thorfinns past trying to drag him back to hell (violence)
@@christopherpenny7796 yeah, I've read a decent amount of the series so far and it's only just picking up. I hope we don't have a huge wait for the next season
Thorfinn accepted Slave life to respecc and keep his bonus agility. He suffered a bit of aging and whipping penalty in his natural peak agility but still has a good average. Now he's min maxing with str, consti and end along with high natural agility. Man's playing Dnd.
Am I the only one who actually gained respect for Drott after he said to Thorfinn “sorry if I doubted you , you are a true warrior ..” it’s like he truly respected Thorfinn and not even that but also tried his best with Wulf to let Thorfinn pass and clear the way for him to meet Canute.
@@TheTruth-13 this is why some people don’t get my points or the shows points , No what I mean was instead of being humiliated in front of his men in any other animes the what we call someone against the main hero would mostly stay quiet if he got humiliated in front of his men, but no, Drott didn’t go quiet he instead respected Thorfinn and called him by his full name and even tried with Wulf to support Thorfinn to meet Canute.
@@Itz_M0e humiliated? There’s a guy standing in Silence with bruises all over his face and endured all of the pain without a single laugh and you think he would feel humiliated by him? In what world would someone feel humiliated by someone else’s pain? Why would he go quiet when Thorfinn did something none of those soldier would or can do? What soldier would find someone else’s endurance of pain embarrassing?
@@milleniumadam8643 Totally agree with you! The snake and Einar in the story embody this, but it's also real in our world. There are few, like journalists and politicians, who advocate for peace with conviction and courage, not using violence. I respect them deeply and I wish to be as brave as them.
@@milleniumadam8643 wow so if someone just hurt my close ones i should stay sillent geez no wonder budhism is about slave morality and denying own humanity
Thorfinn and Canute aside, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Olmar's character development. From a brash, rude warrior wannabe brat, to a real man who finally found the true meaning of strength and his way of life. Just like he said; "I wanna be like you, Thorfinn. A real man. Strong. And kind."
@@mangakage670 I'm pretty sure most people can survive having their arm broken/dislocated/mangled, lots of people do in fact but surviving 100 punches from a guy that size is something I doubt almost anyone, if anyone (irl at least) can do. I don't think why you think one being able to survive the former implies being able to survive the former other.
*Norse Saint*. Comparing getting punched 100 times to crucification doesn’t work too well. By all extents crucification remains the most painful and vicious way to die.
@@NagatoOPRESSORTHUGLIFE @28Decimo the OP is just pointing out the literary parallel between Jesus and Thorfinn. Thorfinn is in a way taking his beating for the sake of the farm in the same way Jesus was crucified for us. And in doing so, Thorfinn is doing no wrong just as Jesus did. The imagery is also very clear with Thorfinn's hair looking like traditional depictions of Jesus's. And of course, Thorfinn was inspired by Jesus's sermon on the mount that he heard snake reading because it was the same as Thors' philosophy.
@@noahjacob5552 while yes with the imagery it’s embracing the lessons of Jesus. The story and author has admitted it is a very Christian story with the themes running throughout partly due to the fall of paganism. Saying basically viking Jesus is comparing one’s self to the literal son of God, which one, isn’t fair to Thorfinn, but two Jesus didn’t need to work on a farm to not kill people. It evokes similar imagery due to the desire to emulate the messages of the Bible that Thorfinn has been listening to.
I like how Snake doesn't just shrug Thorfinn off or admire how he's standing for the Farm, he tries to help Thorfinn by stopping him, shows that Snake is the bigger man
True. I have mixed feelings about Snake. He definitely wasn't the bigger man when it came to how he handled Gardar; Gardar was gravely injured and wasn't going to hurt anyone else, trying to kill him wasn't going to bring back the men he lost, and it was only going to hurt Arnheid; THAT was small of Snake, in my opinion. But he's also relatively humble, perked up Thorfinn when they first met by making a point about how he still wanted to live (by attacking him, but giving an encouraging laugh and smile afterwards), looked out for his boys on the battlefield against Canute's Jomsvikings, and he does stuff like this. If nothing else he's an interesting character. I just wish he handled certain things differently.
@@LauderdizzleI think one of the other reasons snake didn't wanna let garzar go was cause gardar said he'd kill ketil, and by letting him go snake would be actively putting the farm in danger in case gardar decided to come back for vengeance on ketil once healed
The same kid that couldn't even take two words in the past is now willingly taking 100 punches like a true warrior, talking about character development.
People can hate the less action of this series but the character development in this season has been huge. The fact they can make us all sit there and let us know how strong thorfinn has become without using his fists they even threw in a fight where he drew with someone who was extremely skilled and had a weapon whilst thorfinn had bare hands. The handicaps they placed on thorfinn have gone way to unnoticed, if people are complaining about the lack of fighting and not realising they are still showing you just how strong thorfinn really is without him fighting, then there’s no hope for those people and they’re the ones missing out on this series
Man this shit weak either way took 2 long on trash side characters dude turn into a bitch the whole season like bro they shouldve called the second season slice of vikings
@@yariperolini7273 thing about that is this series gets a lot wrong about the Bible, Canute does. He talks about trying to save ppl but leaves out all the stuff in the Bible about true salvation.
I love the foil between Thorfinn and Canute. Thorfinn started out as a man defined by hate and violence, but grew into someone defined by love and non-violence. Meanwhile, Canute was weak and indecisive, but grew into a man who felt that unconditional love meant doing anything to create a world defined by love and peace. Canute is an example of how good people can become monsters through the false promise of utopias and the philosophy of the “greater good”. Meanwhile, Thorfinn is an example of how no one is beyond redemption, and most importantly, the best way to live is by treating every person as if they are the only person alive: everyone is an end in of themselves, rather than a means to an end. That’s why Thorfinn hearing the Sermon on the Mount from the Bible is so awesome: if you don’t love even your enemies (or like Thorfinn says, have no enemies in the first place), how can you say to be loving at all? Like everyone’s favourite drunken priest said to Canute: “That is not love, but discrimination”. Only bullies rely on violence and consider themselves “strong” or “manly”. No, true strength, true courage, true love, comes from the strength to reject hatred and embrace kindness
@@andreasfoerster772 Ahh I thought so. I have a question for you, if you don’t me asking of course. Do you think it’s possible for a man to hold on to God whilst living in such a time and seeing death everywhere? I know Thorfinn is supposed to represent a more grounded Christ-like approach to the warfare but even he himself is not a believer
i love this manga, the author knew that people waiting for thorfin to show his combat as assasin before, but instead they show thorfin through endurance and kindness, thats really define what kind of warrior thorfin is
@@Shigaraki-cv5lhHow? If he fought back they would have got a war and it showed mental and physical toughness to endure that. He even showed how now he started to embrace thors teachings. It was even cooler bc he chose to fight for the people who fought him previously still.
@@galaxyvulture6649 start a war- have you ever heard of good sportsmanship? Also it’s hard to keep to those ideals when you’re being assaulted and you do nothing to stop it.
@@Shigaraki-cv5lh Thing is if they didn't keep their deal thorfinn obviously would have fought. I mean a couple episodes ago he just fought snake. Then in the manga he fights this other person I won't name. He clearly was confident in his ability to handle them so he resorted to that method.
nooo man you skipped his line, it's not just "I don't have any enemies" 5:23 - " _why didn't you strike back?_ " - " _what kind of question is that? I can't hit someone when I'm trying to negotiate for peace_ " or - " _what good would come from a peace-negotiator talking through his fists?_ " *~ manga ver*
Vinland Saga is Just Different. What i like about this anime compared to others is that story telling is not the purpose. It's trying to teach us viewers the based way of living instead. Despite the epicness of vikingship and manhood, those are only tools for the author to send that deep meaningful message.
I honestly love olmars development. He is basically a fast paced thorfinn. He went from desiring to battle and after he got what he wanted hated it and after seeing thorfinn he is completely inspired and clearly believes in him and what he stands for
Fun fact for everyone: In case people don’t get how strong thorfinn is, the technique throfinn uses to absorb/dodge the punches is a technique also used by a boxing champion called Date from the anime Hajime no ippo. A technique usually only learnt from the most experienced fighters around which takes years to master and thorfinn acheived that during his war days as a child and still without practise used that technique out of the blue in this video. Throfinn is insane
It's not that deep, dude. Rolling with punches in order to not absorb the full brunt of them is a technique virtually every professional boxer/MMA fighter performs regularly, is part of fighting just like bobing and weaving or blocking punches. Date was just an example of someone extremely proficient at it.
One of the best duels I've ever seen in anime, and there weren't even any blows exchanged. I loved when everyone turned serious when Thorffin yelled at the soldier to continue. The best thing was Thorfin's phrase "why would I hit someone if I came to talk about peace?" a shame it wasn't in the video.
Well in theory he does half dodges them but it seems as if he is taking them on head on because he twists his neck and hips at the same time time of the impact.
I like how you added the part from season 1 I don’t remember Canute going so far out of his way to save Thorfinn but I love the respect they have for each other.
Olmar now realizing that thorfinn was twice the man his brother is and realizing the suffering he caused and his will to make amends turns him to become just like him.
Gotta love the respect. Even when everyone made fun of him, he took the punches, and the rest of the guys respected him for it. No one was mad they were wrong. Just accepted it.
I just felt like saying this... I'm from India during my younger days, I hated Mahatma Gandhi for his ideologies and his approach to life and war. I didn't understand how he viewed this world and how he handled things. During the colonial era of India when our people became slaves, I thought violence would be the only way to fight back. However, now I understand that violence will only result in more violence and nonviolence is the only way to achieve peace and I came to understand Gandhi through Thorfinn. "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mahatma Gandhi It just fits perfectly for this scene.
Atleast someone understood. Hope our young generation understand. Our media is not a proper guidance for current youth. They don't understand what they are saying.
I gotchu guys. The one that plays when he takes the punches is in the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zzo_1EBV4K8.html I don’t think the ost is out for it yet, but this is the closest it’ll get.
I just noticed that the studio loves to end the episode on the start of a fight and in the next episode they start with a slow motion hit with like a splatter of blood or snow they did it in the first season in thorfinn vs thorkell second fight and in the last episode i belive when they started with fox backstory and now this
Many people who stopped watching the show, would love to punch 100 times to save someone, but never to get punched 100 times so nobody gets hurt, that’s how strong thorfinn is!
The writing of this scene is good. It shows the rowdy Vikings cheering and mocking thorfinn in the beginning. Leading to disbelief halfway through that this guy could actually take 100 punches and finally utter silence and respect from them as they realise thorfinn wasn’t joking and bested drott by not even throwing back a single punch.
Not even halfway. Just 32 punches in, they were shook/in disbelief. I think it makes the scene even better because of how realistic it is. Not even halfway through yet he was un phased. 32 punches alone was already overkill.
Funny thing is, Drott kind of knew he lost the moment he heard Thorfinn’s speech. I bet he got completely deflated psychologically that the 68 punches probably lacked the weight of the first 32 punches.
@@lenardbordo9838 he's still somewhat on guard if he's walking into an armed camp, though I don't remember if he sees the attack at the last second braces or something along those lines. Regardless, he was definitely completely relaxed when walking into his home, at least in terms of combat - he was probably still nervous about his family's reaction.
I've watched this scene like 5 times today. I thought I wouldve gotten used to the scene where Thorfinn shit talks Drott and says "People are waiting for me!" That makes me tear the fk up. Then you get Thorfinn saying that "no one is my enemy"... Bruh I thought I couldn't love this anime more but I keep getting proved wrong time and time again. 😭😭😭 And also, I thought no one could top Yuki Kaji as one of my top VAs, but Yuto Uemura is really making it difficult to choose
You can see right after Thorfinn called him out, they all got real quite and stopped with the jeers. They stood and witnessed the rest in silent respect to his resolve.
Vikings felt in an instant the spirit of the true warrior, they acknowledged it, not because they're ignorant the experienced of the Vikings in war and the people they've killed, spoke Emmidiately; but thorffin put aside the fear/war, and give room to talk for peace without violence, remarkable scene.🙌👏
Canute made him a slave damn I thought he’d just throw thorfinn in prison for a couple months but naw I understand why they were making Canute so evil now even his brother knew Canute poisoned him he just loved him so much to tell anybody
What Canute did was basically the most merciful thing possible that wouldn't waste Askeladd's sacrifice. Thorfinn attacked him at the worst possible time, and in any other circumstance he would've ended up executed. Besides, it's not like Thorfinn could've done anything as a free man given that with Askeladd gone, he basically had nothing to live for.
@@epsilonxvi5675 you understand nothing Canute think about true love , it’s a philosophical Christian theology. It’s agape . The love of human is discrimination but it’s not why he kill his brother , he kill his brother because of his own goal : making a Paradis in earth and for this he need to unifying all Vikings and after this all mankind.
This is not 21st century damnit we're talking about Viking society from 1000 years ago. Thorfinn drew blade against the newly appointed King in front of all the lords, judging by _those_ times Thorfinn was eligible for straight execution. You could see how everyone barged in to get his head. Canute had to apply some sort of punishment else he would lose a lot of face in front of his new people. Vikings were people who appreciated aggressiveness in their leaders and in general, what would they think of a King who cannot even punish the guy who cut his face in public? Besides I'm pretty sure Canute knew Thorfinn's rebellious nature+highly combative skills pretty well by now, he could escape any slave owners if he really wanted to. As far as Canute was concerned Thorfinn would be punished for treason with slavery and then escape and roam free go on with his life, in opposition to straight execution. Hell, even Thorfinn acknowledges all this and is not even 1% mad at Canute only grateful, only the fans like to apply modern laws and morale. 😅
