Note to purists: Because I am mixing and matching some of the monsters, there are a few color clips which I converted to black and white for continuity's sake, though full color is used at the end of the video.
Watching this reminded me again that Ray Harryhausen is still the undisputed king of stop motion. His monsters are always recognizable for their quality
Cool homage to our beloved behemoths. When I was little and watched "Them!" on TV during a weekend, that sound that the giant ants made creeped me out so much. It still has a certain magic to it, that eerie noise. 🐜
I actually liked Cloverfield. I was afraid that it was going to be "Blairwitch Godzilla". But I saw it in the theater and the sound editing was incredible. It was a totally different feel than the DVD.
SCi-Fi movies that have the trait of making long segments with real abrasive noises, imagine Godzilla giving a speech, just aint getting any show time here.
They always came on tv late Friday or Saturday night and you knew to get the popcorn made. No cable or satellite bill, just good 'ol rabbit ears on top of the tv
“Tarantula” is by far the better film. It’s not aimed at the teenage drive-in crowd, nor does it suffer from the cheesy effects that were the hallmark of Bert I. Gordon movies.
Some great clips from classic movies. I can't recall how many times I have watched each of these movies, and still enjoy them. And, I am in my mid 60s, but still a kid at heart.
A wonderful compilation showing similar events (monsters looking in windows, destroying landmarks, etc.) from different movies. Great memories. Thank you.
OMG this is sooo cool. It like a love letter to the 50s and 60s monster movies, and it show everything that is cool about these films. Good job dude, good job.
WOW...this was a lot of fun to watch! I saw 'Destroy All Monsters' on a triple bill along with 'Ghidrah, The Three Headed Monster' and 'The Green Slime' at a drive-in in 1970. I was 5 years old and it had a profound impact on me. I've been a life long Godzilla fan ever since. Thanks much for posting!
FredFlix I heard that the headstone in his grave said something to the effect of ...Russ Meyer- King of the nudies! I was glad to do it.... LMAO Between the satire he was known for and his continual use of unusually big breasted actresses, the man was a legend! 😁 At first he was strongly opposed by feminists, later in time they revered him for empowering women! Quite ironic... 🤣
Pause the video at 1:11, you can see Lionel Lines on the tender, AND the tender is backward in the train's consist--the coal should be directly behind the engine.
Wish some one would put these on RU-vid. I was born in 1957, THEM came out in 1954, the black scorpion 1957, Beginning of the END: 1957, The Deadly Mantis 1957, and so many others.
@@Setmose If they are, then 1. they are under a different name which I find often in order to get to horror/zombie, and such, or two you have to pay to watch them, which I can't. But thanks any way.
When I was young I had a little trouble with Them!. It wasn't the creepy giant ants, or their screeching. It was seeing Santa Claus messing with giant ants. I had seen and was happy with Edmund Gwenn as Santa Claus in Miracle on 34th Street. Then, along comes Them! and it has Santa fighting giant ants. I was young, and I think it was the first time I had to confront the concept that an actor might do more than one part in their lifetime.
That was just about every monster from every monster movie except the 40ft woman I remember from Friday night Sammy Terry horror movie show. He would come out of his coffin and scare us kids in the 60's with a double feature. A little black and white TV with rabbit ears on top just like Carl Evans remembers. The commercial would come on and we would have to go to the bathroom and notice that Dad was no longer in the living room with us, which meant he was hiding in my room or my sister's room and the bathroom was after them down the hall. We had to go pee but knew he was going to grab one of us as we ran down the hall. Good memories of when I was a little kid. Peace and be good to each other.
Miss those days of these movies.. nothing today.. reality crap.. favourite was good ol Godzilla... his roar was very memorable .. the other movies I saw also, use to run home after getting candy on Halloween night to see these and then later years, here movie Saturday theater matinees with these and other movies...... now.. no more...... :(
Another fine FredFlix production. I miss these old 50's black & white masterpieces of horror. The small monsters never scared me it was the giant or nuclear created ones that frightened me as a kid.
@@FredFlix Excellent job. This video brings back memories of my childhood. Spending the night at my cousin's house watching Friday night monster movies while eating home made popcorn cooked on top of the stove. By the way, ask your viewers which 50's movie would they like to see remade today.
I was 8 years old when I went with my older brothers to watch "Them". It scared me so much, that I spent most of the movie in the lobby, pretending to study the candy machine, and go in and out of the boys room, because I didn't want to admit that I was scared 💩less!,......😂🤣😂. Good memories. Thanks again, Fred.
I don't know why, but I've never been scared watching monster movies...only thrilled. I guess even at 7 years old, I knew there was no real danger. But, years later, I gotta say, The Excorcist scared the crap outta me and I couldn't sleep well for a week.
I have quite a few of these on DVD or USB drive sticks, except some of the later Godzilla flicks with all those other crazy kaiju, 'The Amazing Colossal Man' and its silly sequel, 'War of the Colossal Beast,' the silliier 'Beginning of the End,' with its giant ( rear-projected ) grasshoppers and locusts... and one of the lousiest 'monsters' ever to fly across movie screens...That's right! You guessed it! 'The Giant Claw!'
There is nothing wrong with CGI if used properly. What I fear is remakes of the classic sci-fi movies like “Them!”, “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms,” “Forbidden Planet,” or “Tarantula.” Hollywood is so dumbed down these days that the films will be done with tongue firmly planted in cheek, as if the filmmakers were too good for their material.
"Them", the 1950's movie about mutant ants; in that opening scene a little girl who is a mute survivor, is laying in an ambulance while the attendant and cop talk. Out of sight comes the chirping noise of a mutant, and while both men look away for the source the little girl sits bolt upright, a closeup of her face, silently telegraphing to the audience the horrors to come, and then she slowly reposes when the sound fades; the two men having entirely missed that telling moment. Now that scene right there is movie-making as it used to be folks.
I agree, Fred does great work. I'm a little confused though. If ever a monster deserved to be on a list, Reptilicus deserved to be on this one. Seems like either a major oversight on Fred's part, or maybe he just doesn't like Danish movies. lol
"The End?" I sure hope not! Great job, Fred. I always admire your attention to detail, such as maintaining continuity by showing color footage in black & white. My favorite sequence was the combining of the Triffids with the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Man, I love _all_ of these films! Just yesterday I was telling a 23 year old friend about the (not so) special effects in "The Beginning of the End." :) During the train derailment montage I was hoping for a glimpse of the Giant Claw. Maybe next time...
Thanks, Thomas. All of these movies, good and bad, retain their charm. But The Giant Claw? No, I just couldn't go there. However, it's in an upcoming video.
Giant monster movie stars-in-the-making: Clint Eastwood was the jet pilot in Tarantula, Lee Van Cleef was the guy who shot the Rhedosaurus in Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and Leonard Nimoy was the army radio operator in THEM!
i never left the tube my entire childhood, i saw all these movies including the mexican ones, they were so fun and so fake but that didn't matter, the girls could really scream then, the feminist with there oink hats screaming at the sky today, could take a lesson from them, the men had a lot of responsibility then, had to save all the women from the monsters, today theres nothing for a man to do. The women now days will kick you ass for real if you try to save them .
I remember him in Francis in the Navy, but if he was in Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick, I can find no evidence of it. Are you sure about that one, diamonddog? That would have been 3 years before his first 5 documented appearances in 1955.
My favorite line in the entire picture!!! Wondered if anyone else noticed that!!! And this guy was the first one to get killed in the old The Blob movie as well!!
Some times when mother wanted me to get up and go to school I would pull the blanket over my head and repeat that line. She never found out where it came from. But it did get some laughs.
This is a great video Fred! IDK if you take requests from fans (I somehow think you do) but can you do a list of moments from silent horror movies from the 1920s please? If you like making your own content then I understand.
👏 They Just don't make 'em Like they Used To .!. U Got ALL the Stops 👉 Model trains & cars tossed around - Tearing through the Power Lines - People Eaten - Cops & Soldiers with their little Pop-guns - Then Here Comes The Air Force with THE BIG BOMB 💥 Ahh ~ those classic cheap monster flix
@@zoppie One thing common to all great art films of this sub genre are galactically stupid people getting eaten alive by the monster. All she had to do was open the door, that takes a lot less time and effort than tearing off the dress. Even stupider than that was the cop who emptied his K-38 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special (substantially less powerful than a 9mm) -- all six rounds -- into a 70 million ton reptile with skin tougher than the hull of a U.S. battleship. Then he stands there for 14 geologic epochs while the monster bends over to pick him up with his teeth and swallow him alive. I always burst out with a cheer when I see stupid people getting killed.
Being a long-time model builder, it always pains me whenever I see one of the giant movie monsters stomp on a city. I know how many hundreds of hours it takes to build the model structures, vehicles, and other miniatures. Although the rubber suits or stop-motion puppets of some of the monsters survive, hardly any of the other miniatures still exist. They were either discarded at the end of filming or recycled into other productions.
Have you ever seen Emperor Wang's palace, constructed for "Flesh Gordon"(NOT the serial with Buster Crabbe!)? Made, mostly, with plastic ups! Cheey low-budget spoof, but absolutely hysterical!
@@hebneh True, but it only fully appears in the first and last scenes. Most of the film only hints at its existence. Whereas a film like "Them" the giant ants appear in all the action segments.
Gorgo at London Bridge was obvious. How many people know that the OTHER shot of the bridge being attacked was from the original, SILENT, version of "The Lost World", which starred Wallace Beery?
Oh excellent work. Can you tell us how you are able to take footage from so many movies and edit it to make shows like this? Do they come of DVDs or VHS copies or or what? The quality looks excellent!
I thought there must be some sort of dispute over rights on Kronos, as I don't think I've seen that shown on TV in over 40 years, and I'm currently getting about 150 channels. But I was wrong, it's all over YT, so it's available. It's not that great a movie, but neither is Cloverfield, and they show that piece of shit all the time.
Was hoping someone else would notice his appearance! Apparently, he & Miss Corday were long term friends! (she even hade a bit part in one of his Harry Callahan flics!)
Please Stand By For Fawning Praise: Great compilation! Truly you are as much a fan of the sub-genre as I. But what I really love is the thematic pairings of the different films! & Janet Scott was so cute! Maybe you could add her to one of your 'Old-school Starlets' list! (If you haven't already!)
Janette Scott was incredible! It was such a waste in Crack in the World when husband Dana Andrews couldn't or wouldn't have sex with her. But, yeah, old monsters R me.
They should enlist ''Them'' to fight against ''The Black Scorpion'' and ''Tarantula". & how about the Quintopus (''It Came From Beneath The Sea'') vs ''The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms'' ?
@@emintey It was the fall from Hoover Dam in the 1st film that messed him up. But really, they couldn't get the same actor -- so made a back story to hide the face.
Actually, they have the entire movie here on youtube. The shot him with a bazooka AND he fell off Hoover Dam. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jLpCXyS0rdk.html
The ones I recognize: Them; The Deadly Mantis; King Kong; The Beginning of the End; It Came From Beneath the Sea; Godzilla; Godzilla vs Mothra; Ninety Million Miles to Earth?? Haven't seen all of them. Hope this helps. Oh forgot The Collasal Man.
@@aileenwagner2576 20 Million Miles to Earth. They brought that monster back from Venus. Rodan was the flying reptile. The giant spider was Tarantula. The Black Scorpion was another. I probably still don't have all of them.
