Today we make a 2 month update on how the orchids potted in semi hydro are doing, draw some conclusions and share some thoughts.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
The Phalaenopsis are the first orchids that I switched to this method and are doing very well. They are not the only ones doing great, Oncidiums, Cattleyas and Dendrobiums seem to adapt and actually thrive.
I also managed to resolve some issues I have in my climate, such as layering, by using short pots and play around with the size of the leca.
I prefer white pots because they go well with my brown shelves. I also want to avoid algae as much as possible, so clear pots are not really to my liking.
Part 2 tomorrow!

I love how you stick to the content of your videos. You don't deviate from your tests and experiments and the presentation is approachable to those who are new to the content, especially to those starting the hobby.

Hi. Nice update. I am currently busy with changing over to semi hydrogen after following your channel. I can already see a big difference in the two plants that is in it for two weeks now. Thanks for all your info. Ps got a Shoenorchis fragranis a couple of days ago. Its a beautiful mini orchid.

I think one of the coolest things about semi-hydro in see-through pots is being able to see the root system. Especially with orchids. But I understand what you’re saying about the algae.

I am changing my setting to semihidro too. I am doing it mostly because I live in a humid environment and I can never tell if the middle of the pot is wet or not and also because I want to water less often since I travel a lot. Your tips are great and have been helping me a lot.

Those orchids have interesting roots! Very good tips about putting the smaller beads at the top to maintain better hydration. I have lemon seedlings in similar pots. I just spray painted my containers black this past weekend.

In order to the moisture up to the surface I have been using this thick cord that I got from the Dollar Tree. I cut it very long where I swirl it at the bottom of the vase going straight up to the top then I pour in the clay balls. I got extra Leca on Amazon but this time the much larger size balls. They allow for aeration.

I put some layers of absorbent paper on the top of the pot to keep it moist, actually works great

Plants looking pretty good :) I have a few of my plants in semi-hydro as well, including one hoya which loves it. However I wonder whether for Phalaenopsis orchids it's ok to have the roots sit in the water? Dani, in France we have different sizes of leca, small and large. Maybe you can find small sized ones near you.

hi, would you explain how you water orchid in semi hydro and how you fertilize in this setting ? why you keep the reservoir empty in cherry baby oncidium ?

My oncydiums are out doors with my catlyas and cymbidiums. I am trying to use existing pots so have incorporated trays as my water wells. I think I am going to have to water more often. They look dry.

If you have a garden sieve it might help to separate smaller and larger LECA.

Hi, thanks for another great video. I was just curious about the resevoir with your orchids. I noticed that in several places the roots were going in the resevoir. Do you have any thoughts about root rot with this?

I will be trying leca for one of my phals, I really like the idea of a non-rotting medium. I will probably not go full semi hydro with it, yet at least. As of now, I have standard clear plastic pots with extra holes, and a decorative pot with a bottom layer of leca with a little water. Anything I should think of with this kind of setup? As far as I understand, leca dries out more than bark in this kind of setup, is this correct?
@Micho55
@Micho55 4 года назад
using bigger beads at the bottom would produce more free space due to spherical packing so I think it would have slightly more water in the reservoir than with smaller ones

Hi Dani, Forgive me if you've already explained this in a past video, but do you have any trouble with the roots that grow down into the water reservoir rotting? I've never tried semi-hydro, but am contemplating it. But this aspect really concerns me. Thanks!

Hi Danni. you mentioned about the top layer drying out. Could you use Sphagnum moss for say 2 - 3 cm, Wouldn't that solve the problem. Great video's. Danny.

Hi Danny. The space is aerated between the clay beads when the plant is not established. After the development of root system the whole space fills the roots no matter the size of the beads. They dry out less quickly
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 6 лет назад
+Aylen O Hi Aylen, actually it's not quite like that, roots will mainly fill the gaps at the edge of the pot, the middle is clear and aerated. Also roots absorb water, the more roots the faster the pot dries. Leca doesn't biodegrade so it will never retain more water with age like bark :) and also the size of the leca absolutely matters, the bigger the leca the bigger the air pockets, thin roots will fill spaces a lot slower, if ever by the time the orchid overgrows its pot.
@ayleno3698
@ayleno3698 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply Danny. I had the same obserrations as you Danny for the development of the roots. :) What I wanted to say is that when the roots grow and touch the water it convey it to the top of the pots. The same way as leca beads. The same as natural water evaporation. That's why I observe that leca beads on the surface of my pots are not so dry. Even if I use big-caliber beads (I do not have any other :)) )

Lovely orchids I have a question I have been looking into this method but I am unsure weather it would work outside when the summer comes back around because I take my orchids outside during the summer and bring them in the winter I have a funny feeling that this method outside will bring all kinds of Critters into your media and destroy your orchid roots thank you and happy growing

Danny I need your help! I tried to set my hydroponic for my orchid that look like it was really dying I put it in the tea and let it absorb water then I put it in some of the clay balls whatever they are. And it just is not doing very well? Should I be more patient? Also can I send you pictures of my, what’s left of my plant?

Actually I think it is related to contact surface. Smaller diameter will have more contact surface for capillary attraction of moisture and "lift" water.

@ZanesWildflora
@ZanesWildflora 6 лет назад
Girl you got me confused :D you say its not the ratio what you minimizing but the total volume of air with the smaller leca. If the ratio stays the same, the total volume of airpockets will be the same as well, since no matter how small or big the spheres are the ratio will be the same. Though like you said the individual pockets will be smaller indeed.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 6 лет назад
+Zane's Wildflora haha yeah, 30% is the ratio (between air and the other round objects), the smaller the leca, the smaller the air pockets (volume).. ratio still remains 30% :)
@ZanesWildflora
@ZanesWildflora 6 лет назад
MissOrchidGirl so youre not minimizing the total volume of air by smaller leca. Okay, i just wanted to clear it up after hearing that sentence in your vid :D Ps i love how the aging washed out the color on your Saint Andre
@tinaengelsen1435
@tinaengelsen1435 6 лет назад
Zane's Wildflora what is your thoughts on not round leca ? The leca I bought from schwerter is not completely round but in different shapes, it keeps very moist almost too moist, but I'm concerned about the air yet I figure if they sell it, it must be good quality? 🤔
@EllePlowPlow
@EllePlowPlow 6 лет назад
Tina Engelsen I would be careful with that as it doesn’t sound like it provides room for air and many orchid roots need air to remain in a healthy state.
