In 1966 William Hartnell departed Doctor Who. Not wanting to end the show, the producers came up with the ingenious idea of the Doctor being able to change appearance.
Patrick Troughton, so said Hartnell himself, was the only man in England who could take over. His refreshing energy revitalised the feel of the show and ensured that the role could, if needed, go on forever. His legacy cannot be understated, so as I head into the Third Doctor's era on the marathon, here are my thoughts on the cosmic hobo, the adorable scruffbag - Patrick Troughton...
