Thoughts on the Second Doctor | Doctor Who Marathon From The Beginning | The Scruffbag

In 1966 William Hartnell departed Doctor Who. Not wanting to end the show, the producers came up with the ingenious idea of the Doctor being able to change appearance.
Patrick Troughton, so said Hartnell himself, was the only man in England who could take over. His refreshing energy revitalised the feel of the show and ensured that the role could, if needed, go on forever. His legacy cannot be understated, so as I head into the Third Doctor's era on the marathon, here are my thoughts on the cosmic hobo, the adorable scruffbag - Patrick Troughton...

I love troughton, i just think it is unfortunate so many of his episodes are missing, because he does a very visual performance that unfortnally can't be recaptured with the animations

Troughton was my Dr as a kid.And all these years later still is.Pat Troughton was perfect casting and being such a great TV/Film actor carried it off.Hartnell created the role magnificently and Troughton added to it in spades. However i have always felt sad that the 1966-69 era ended on a down note for the second Dr cast into exile with a forced change of face. And as he spun away feeling giddy you could hear him feeling defeated.I have to admit i have never really gotten over that. However looking forward to your 70s marathon.

I've been to comic cons as three Doctors Troughton Smith And Tennant but I went niche and made it the outfit his human clone from Journey's end wore.

Excellent Patrick Troughton look, despite the lack of Patrick Trousers ❤

One of my favourites, in terms of both character and actor. Troughton is so meticulous, always doing new things with the part, from broad comedy to subtleties, dangerous and unknowable to sweet and kind, charming, rude, exciting, alienating, playful, outraged, etc etc etc. Wonderful

Hartnell portrayed the doctor as authoritative, wise. His character development from selfish to brave cemented the importance of the role of the companions in the show. Troughton turned Hartnell's authoritativeness upside down - appearing as bumbling, inept (to his foes) - but underneath lightyears ahead in cunning and mercurial tactics. He also brought whimsy and something 'edgy' - simply sublime and he will forever be 'my doctor' (sadly that's how old I am). Looking forward to your Pertwee run - he brought back Hartnell's gravitas, but with a certain suave charm.

i love Hartnell, but Troughton was the first doctor that i felt i could connect with, and that i enjoyed every single story of his

Doctor Who Magazine did an article to mark 50 years of Troughton's Doctor (2016?) and they made a really interesting comparison between Hartnell's and Troughton's Doctors which I hadn't considered before. When Hartnell was in danger or confronting a monster etc. there was always a 'twinkle', a chuckle, an aside etc. and he did that deliberately to reassure the children at home that Doctor Who would be ok. But Troughton never did this, he always played the threats seriously and offered no reassurance. Yet Hartnell is seen as the grumpy old man and Troughton as the clown.

You’ve only to listen to Colin Baker talk about Pat to understand how loved he was amongst his fellow actors and fans. THE template for a “new” Doctor and one of my absolute favourites.

Whatever about one's own thinking on Troughton's Doctor, and I think he was great in the role, he had arguably the hardest task faced by any actor in the part and, without him, the series would probably have died and become a faintly remembered 60s curio.

My non-fan boyfriend actually initiated a marathon viewing a few years ago. He said that Troughton was his least favourite. In contrast, Trougton was my previous bf’s favourite Doctor.

A great influence on Matt Smith's portrayal in 'New Who' of course. Patrick was a fine performer, and seems to have been universally loved by his colleagues. It's good that we haven't seen the last of him too, he'll be back for three more stories after the end of his era and, I would suggest, he stole the show each time. I've only discovered this channel thus week and, by the end of the day, I will have caught up with you, from Unearthly Child to Spearhead From Space. Some great analysis yo be found here. Finally, am I allowed to plug another channel? If so, The Shallow Proclomation is worth checking out, a very different approach, but still a 'from the beginning' format, very entertaining, and they have reached more or less the same point.
