If you want an example of Carlson Gracie himself using a variation of this technique check out from 0:33 to about 0:52 of his classic fight against Waldemar Santana in Brazil: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GesmWClbdeQ.html
Has any fighter actually used this inside the UFC octagon where opponents jump on you with fists swinging in less than 1 second? Or is this simply another move which is only good for BJJ tournaments? I simply can't see this working in the street in a self - defense situation.
I believe there's footage of Carlson Gracie himself using this movement in a barenknuckle fight in Brazil. If I find it I'll put it on my blog. Ultimately it's all contextual. Yes, you can get hit in the face if you're trying this kind of guard retention moment, but if the guy passes your guard and gets mount then you'll get hit 10x worse. You're in a fight - there is no safety.
Stephan, Hi. Thanks. Appreciate your replying. IF you can find footage of Carlson using this in a fight, that would be a real convincer for me. But please don't go crazy looking for it, if you find & can post it, great, icing on the cake - - if not - yes, agreed, the moment someone passes your guard & mounts you, it's usually lights out. I watch many BJJ tutorials but most never mention if the techniques they're demonstrating are applicable strictly to Sport Jiu-Jitsu, or whether the techniques will also work in street/self defense situations, since the issue of Punches are almost never addressed. In most of the tutorials I've seen on other sites, there's no disclaimer saying "Don't try this in the street" - - & also because there's so often a very co-operate "attacker" or "opponent" in these demos, I always watch & end up scratching my head & asking myself "Did they make this strictly for BJJ students for Competition?" or "Can this be transferred to a self defense situation?" where most videos & cell phone footage show that fists start to fly almost immediately towards heads & one wonders whether the defender will even have time to execute a series of moves before that first punch connects to the face, & the back of the cranium hits the concrete. But regardless, thank you for your reply - DJ
Just posted a link to the Carlson fight in the main comments Dave! In general I wouldn't get too hung up about 'sport' vs 'mma' vs 'self defense' jiu-jitsu. I would just train. It's totally conceivable to build a game that translates well to all 3 areas
Thanks for the video. But please drop the intro. The idea of intros comes from TV, where they needed a cheap way to make a show just a little bit longer to fill the time to the next ad. They have no place on youtube. Everybody who sees this room knows what is coming - we don't need an introduction. ;)
