A Cape Wrath Trail warm up exercise: Join me on a solo section hike in the Cairngorms National Park following part of the Scottish National Trail from Blair Atholl to Kingussie. The route takes me through the stunning Glen Tilt into open remote country by an old ruined Victorian shooting lodge where I pitch for the night. The second day I set off to a less frequented area and visit a stunning waterfall before pitching up in Glen Feshie. The last section I take a shortcut to Kingussie.

Looks cracking Robin, that waterfall shot, stunning. Got me reminiscing, been two years since I’ve visited the area, did my first long day taking in a Munro and a wild camp with the dog near the river. Such a beautiful area. That lodge looks perfect… thanks again for sharing… ATB👍

What a fantastic trip. I loved the scenery. So different than here in Newfoundland, Canada. The tree scene at 15:02 looked beautiful. What a big tree. So many other beautiful scenes also. A very enjoyable video......Take care, Bluefin.

loved that you posted this..planning to do the SNT next may, so nice to see some of the route. Did glen feshie 2019 on the TGO, and yer that river crossing threw us as well. instead of glen feshie, I'll keep heading north up to white bridge, then glen Dee, Lairig Ghuru,rejoin the route from Aviemore, yer..jog on purists..lol..cracking vid as ever..ATB WJ

Glad I found this vid! More great work. I actually camped at the same place 5 years ago when doing the same walk, well from old Blair to Braemar. Moved the tent twice before settling down....scared of a wall falling and then a massive limb stuck up that tree.only down side was someone left a big jobby. Why they didnt do it away from the lodge is beyond me. Had to go up the river crossing as was too deep until I found a deer fence to cross. My best walk ever!

Did this walk in July 2014 & the Geldie Burn crossing was a nightmare in spate. Thigh deep & strong current. Fantastic remote feel in Glen Geldie to the head of Glen Feshie.

I could imagine that being tricky in spate. It's really wide even in normal conditions. Agree about Glen Geldie / head of Feshie. Never seen a sole on that section.

Fantastic Robin. What a tremendously expansive and remote looking landscape. Right up my street that. I really want to go there and experience it after watching that. Was that Ruthven Barracks near the end? I once visited that on my dad's 'birdwatching stag do' (rock 'n' roll 🙄😉) in 1992. We were staying in Aviemore.

Nice one Robin, that wee wooden building at 13 mins 55 secs hasn't changed much. I camped beside it in July 2005 and it looks exactly the same as my photos. When I realised that you were going to be going that way I did wonder if it would still be standing. I seem to remember that it did give a wee bit shelter for cooking and little else. Lovely part of the world that so thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers.

Excellent work Robin, loved it! I'm glad you caught yourself with the wraps, wee Kev would have been beelin'! Few comments to make & a question, so I'll try and separate it; One of the main things that catches my attention across the three days is the level of destruction/change - all those broken/fallen trees, the landslides & the obvious water scars, just shows you the power of nature in those parts! At 18.50; I'm almost certain Springwatch were there a few years back, just after the storm, filming habitat & showing the change to the landscape. That bridge scene; thought Mr. McNeish was making a comeback, haha! In all seriousness though, an amazing shot That pump... what are you thinking! Sounds like a midge on steroids xD At the end of day 2 - thought you were going to hit out with a wee field cookery tutorial ~ How was your hip on day 2/3? Did it worry you for the CWT?

Cheers Scotty, yeah Storm Frank in the winter of 2015 has left its mark in many places in the Cairngorms. The river crossing on the 3rd day shows the sheer destruction of nature. LOL @ McNeish and that pump. 😆 The hip didn't bother me for the rest of the trip, but gave me minor jip on the CWT but wore off. I think it doesn't like tracks. 😬

@@WalkWithWallace yes, if you want true wilderness Sarek is the place to go. Haven't had the time for such a big trip lately though. Takes a long time to drive up there. I used to live in Aberdeen and often went through Linn of Dee way into the gorms. Much shorter trip by comparison to the 13 hours to Sarek

Start small (following simple routes from walkhighlands) and do first camping routes with someone experienced as you’ll learn a ton from them! I only started 3 years ago but now I feel confident with doing lots of adventures like this on my own.

Thanks mate, I think it's probably a good introduction for novices. The 1st and last days are pretty straightforward. The middle section may unnerve some in poor visibility as its quite bleak and remote. The river crossings on the second day would be tricky in spate. @@WalkWithWallace yep so many good routes. Leg is about 90% recovered, I took up kayaking just to keep fit. I will be back in the mountains for October and winter and fingers crossed will not have to be rescued this time. I see you are using a Spot what are they like as I am considering one especially after the accident.

I've got the Garmin InReach Mini and it's excellent for 2 way communication with the missus when there's no phone signal, not to mention the 🆘 button should you need rescued. Subscriptions are a little expensive. I've gone for the cheaper safety plan that gives me unlimited messages from my 3 preset message list to a chosen contact and 10 free messages to anyone I like. £15pm.

Great stuff Robin. Ive done this walk countless times. Judith used to drop me and the dog off at Forest lodge then drive up to her parents farm at Kingussie. I would camp at Bynack and meet her in Feshie before Sunday dinner made by her mum. Used to be a wee car park at forest lodge and I believe you can still drive up to there with permission and a good reason. I used to walk this walk without thinking but I’m not sure I could do it now. Makes me sad but too many things against me at the moment. Thank you for sharing the sights and sounds. It fair took me back. Very enjoyable.

It's a cracking walk mate, and wanted to camp at Bynack after seeing its isolated position from the Munros, then our Andy Hill camped there too. We managed to get permission a few years ago to get into the Tarf Hotel.

Cracking outing that Robin 👏 I had to miss the recent Q&A but watched it back last night. One thing I wanted to ask is how did you get on with the katadyn over multi day use. Basically how much did the flow rate suffer & were you cleaning it when on the trail? TIA

The Katadyn flow rate is still going strong, haven't noticed a drop in performance yet. I always inspect the water before drinking, if I see bits floating around, I'll pour it out and try again. I always forget to wash it to be honest, but usually would rince it under the tap.

Finished this trail yesterday. Should have watched this video before as I was having the same confusions as you with some of the sketchy bits 😂 I was walking from Pitlochry to Aviemore so camped in other spots. I’m just curious was the Feshie bothy open? I almost walked right pass it as I was certain it’s someone’s private home that’s how immaculate it looked! But a lovely guy greeted me and turns out he was taking care of this bothy in his free time but I forgot to ask when It reopened to the public.

Nice trip. Tried to complete this walk a few years ago but heavy rain stopped progress at Bynack Lodge. Did you see where the path had been completely erroded near Allt Garbhlach, Glen Feshie?

I assume it would have been those river crossings that thwarted your progess? Yeah the damage by mother nature in there is mental. I know someone who got stranded in the bothy there when the storm hit, couldn't cross the river with trees and massive boulders being swept down steam. They had to ascend the Munro, up onto the plateau and back down. 😲

A very nice adventure on the Scottish National Trail Robin, great scenery. I see you managed to find the ruined School hut not a big one though. I have tried the Makeral wraps they are great for a wee snack. Are you building up to the West Highland Way.
