Use minimum force, stay with the enemy, know your ideal range.
Fist-fight, sword duel, or a whole front of a modern war, some ideas can be applied across the board.

If a principle is sound, then it is probably applicable in more than one situation. Here I discuss three principles that I consider to be widely applicable in conflict: use the minimum force necessary to do the job; stay in contact with the enemy; know your ideal range and stick to it.

The best rule of street fighting is, don't. Remember your tongue is your first line of defence. If that works you've saved energy. If it doesn't then run. If you've managed to baffle your possible opponent you'll get a headstart.

The thing is, you aren’t wrong, because every single situation he speaks of in this video can be extrapolated to a greater conflict. He is speaking about physical fighting but each fight and action he’s speaking about can also be thought of as arguments or tactics in an argument or military maneuver. Lindy continues to impress me.

Do you think these could be applied to verbal conflicts too? Minimal force: if you can effortlessly deal with what people say to you, without bellowing at them, you are the more mature person. Stay in contact: slightly less applicable but if you are debating with someone and respond to their arguments rather than dancing round the topics then you will be more effective. Know your ideal range: don't get too personal, don't drop needlessly into ad hominems. Good laws for debates too it seems.

id probably put the getting too personal thing into the first cetegory where you should not go all out ..but have the least amount of neccessary backgroudn inf oabout your opponent as necesarry to use against him and range id say would be the vocabulary you use you are not going to discuss somethign with a foreigner who barely speaks the language .. or a child with words that are .. out of his/ her range.. you should use the right kidn of words that fit this situation the most kinda.. eh?^^ srry .. not natice english speaker.. >__

Some people, myself included, raise their voices when passionate. It by no means allows you to infer the maturity of the other person. Instead, it simply allows you the ability to manipulate the other person's fervor for malicious purposes.

@Josh_Fredman

I would propose three different general principles of combat: 1) Conserve energy. (Physical combat is exhausting. Your "use minimum force" can overlap with this.) 2) Stay calm. (Contrary to the myth of "desperate people fight better," deliberate actions usually trump blind rage or terror.) 3) Anticipate. (This is the greatest asset of experience. And I'm not really talking about intuition; essentially, anticipation is an ad hoc exercise in calculating probabilities.)

Just a note, but some treatises do specifically tell you which edge (both front and back) to use in defensive actions. The only treatises that expressly describe using the flat of the blade to defend are for the langes messer and they specifically have a 'nagel' at the side of the guard to make that more practical.

Not really, killing someone is rather deeply rooted as the ultimate crime in most cultures, plus, its effect is immediately apparent- there's a corpse. The effects of rape, such as mental trauma or pregnancy usually occur after the army has moved on, so as far as the soldiers are concerned, they're fictional.

In my experience, the first thing you must learn in a fight is to remain calm, but that can only be achieved if you were used to the adrenaline rush of brawling. All the techniques in the world won't help you if you're too freaked out to remember them. Our bodies panic as they are much better suited to simply running away. You basically have to "hack" your flight reflex.
@Yorikoification
@Yorikoification 7 лет назад
Muscle memory, you don't need to "think" about the movements because you've practised them so many times your body remembers them.
@oldchinahand1305
@oldchinahand1305 7 лет назад
In fairness his videos show that he's quite an enthusiastic re-enactor so some experience. The flight or fight and (Corporal Jones-esque) "Don't Panic! Don't Panic" doesn't really make a great topic. Yoriko is right with muscle memory -you can see this in his fighting moves in the video - obviously practiced. The military trains and trains to de-sensitize troops and imprint them with "muscle memory" in terms of training - how to react to incoming fire, how to move under fire, section and platoon attack drills - drill being the operative word.
@9thAvalon

GIven the number of fights that occur among people everyday, I call bullshit. Also, I'm not by any means a trained fighter, but I've been in a few fights - never run from any of them. I generally got the shit beat out of me, but running doesn't occur to me when I'm already mad enough to be in a fight to begin with. The adrenaline just feeds that fire. Also also, the human body in NO way 'better suited to running away.' We can't run for shit compared to MOST animals even, and a single punch can quite literally knock out a human being. We run mostly when we're STARTLED, not when some guy says' Yo Um gunna fyte u.'
@Yorikoification

There are tribes that still exist today that hunts by running after their prey until it's too tired to stand, then they finish it. Our ability to cross large distances on limited food and water is originally the reason how we've come to be so spread out across the earth originating from Africa. Endurance is mankinds primary physical trait that has lead to our success.
@9thAvalon
@9thAvalon 7 лет назад
Yokiro because superior tool crafting had NOTHING to do with it, eh? We aren't even CLOSE to having 'great' endurance. There are also people in this world who lift cars and eat metal. Lifting cars and eating metal didn't pull us out of the stone age - our evolved brains did.

You got really good oratory skills. Keeping me engaged even throughout the sponsorship is a feat few youtubers actually manage. A good application of the second rule. I can only think of one exception from the rules, and that's again the second one - I do believe there can be an advantage to releasing contact, especially in ranged battles or war. But then, ideally, you'd want to have some reconnaissance in place (contact?) It's also possible that your enemy watches Lindybeige and decides to pursue you, not letting you do _your_ disengagement maneuver and hole up deeper in your territory.

I'd be interested in seeing a test done, trying to punch or hit something with a weapon, with several different levels of telegraphing, and measuring the time that took to deliver the strike, the energy transfered, the energy cost (or how long it takes for you to get exhausted ), etc. Maybe even draw a graph. (who doesnt like graphs, right? ) Did anyone ever do something like this?

No really I know the answer to this but it’s hard to explain. So basically it’s all situational and extremely hard to do. Can happen from a level 0 fighter because they have fast reactions. On the other hand some people are really good at reading your opponent. And then there’s in between.
@andrewcollins133
@andrewcollins133 Год назад
I would not rely on their telegraphs in a real duel as much as mine though. As long as you are wonkier and smarter than them you will be 2 steps ahead. I could never recommend actually waiting for the right moment to smack their weapon out of the way, instead create a trick that makes them do so, wait to smack but really you’re just two steps ahead wanting that to happen ya kno
@andrewcollins133
@andrewcollins133 Год назад
Another thing I wouldn’t ever recommend is any inexperienced fighter trying to out ‘fight’ let alone believe they could block vs an extremely experienced one.

Lindy, the "chi" in chi sau is not energy, it's for adherence. The character for energy ("hei" in cantonese) is officially romanized as Qi. It's subtle, but there's a difference in the pronunciation and a huge difference in meaning. So chi sau really is the concept of adhering hands (or arms). Love your videos, cheers!

I wish someone would ‘flick’ me like that in the middle of a fight lol I would probably pause to appreciate their effort. Stay calm, don’t get lost in your emotions, and ‘focus’ on breathing. The main reason you don’t want to blow your load right out of the gate is because you don’t want to get winded 15 seconds into a fight (like most people do) But you’re definitely going to need to put some force and effort into a fight if you want to win a fight, esp if the other guy wants to win. And don’t ever quit.. the moment you let up, you lose control. Even if you think you’re losing, don’t give in, show that motherfucker you aren’t playing around, because chances are he’s on the verge of letting up too.

My one problem... at least with applying the least amount of force necessarily... is that you rarely know EXACTLY what the enemy is going to do or how they are going to do it, especially initially. Also, it is a defensive tactic. Hear me out: When attacking something, no matter what it is (i.e. fist fight/army/sword-fight) using more force can be a better guarantee of success. Of course, as with your rule, it is entirely situational. The atomic bombs were used in WW2 with excessive force to guarantee a surrender. Now, taken into account with your second rule, the first rule does make sense... except the fact that you are giving away the initiative to your enemy. I'm going to run out of room here, but would love to talk about it more. Anyways some parting advice from someone wiser then I. "Know your enemy and know yourself, and you always win. Know yourself, but not the enemy, and you will win roughly half the time. Know neither yourself or your enemy, and you will always lose." - Sun Tzu

Good point. My issue with most martial arts taught is that the techniques require you to know how you are being attacked and what you are being attacked with. in most cases (assuming your opponent can fight) by the time you see the punch, its hit you.

@Andrew Collins hello necro. It's been 5 years. 5. Years. I barely remember this video or what it talked about. The gist of what I said, though, is that you must assume that your enemy is capable and use the amount of force needed to quell them at their best. If they aren't at their best, it will be seen as overkill. But you can't assume your enemy will make a mistake.

Having done a bit Wing Chun myself, I find that all these moves work finely in theory, but also all the trainers had done about 5-10 years of kickboxing before and learned how to fight there and then refined their techniques with Kung Fu. Also an obvious disadvantage to feeling your opponent is that it also takes them a lot less time to hit you, at least somewhat mitigating your advantage of being able to react faster. Generally it can be said that a good boxer is still a terrifying opponent and you will find that all those nice techniques will quickly collapse under quick well placed hits

@maxtemmel3918
@maxtemmel3918 7 лет назад
Elador1000 kind of. I find that I often use it when I want to escape the pocket (close striking range) and the way I use it is pretty simple; I cover my opponents hands with mine, and copy his movements while retreating. In doing this I keep my hands between my face and his, which leaves my face unpunched.
@CzornyLisek

Any martial arts are about speed(energy transferred also depend mainly on speed). Anyone who is fast is terrifying opponent and bitch to hit. If You can use Wing Chun moves(not exercises) rly fck fast well You would be rly hard to hit and counter Your hits. If You're boxer that move very very fast You are also hard to hit and counter. The faster You're the better You're

Coming from a Karate background, when i was taught about staying in contact with an attacker, it was always about holding brief control so you could land a hit that would end the fight, such as pulling the arm so your punch (or elbow, fuck actually punching someone in the face. that shit hurts) would have more strength and weight doing more damage. This always assumes that the attacker is less skilled and going for monster hits all the time. A skilled boxer would fuck most people up (unless you kick them in the knee, no one figts well on one leg), With their ability to keep the distance and throw fast punches with the most power you can when needed.
@Yorikoification
@Yorikoification 7 лет назад
Boxing is not a life or death situation though, you do not train to take your opponents life or prevent yours from being taken. Boxers hit each other for a period of time much longer than most "real" fights. Also you're not allowed to trip nor grab each other, kind of a big difference. Minimum force and keeping in contact works when someone is really going for you. These are key to finding your opponents center whilst keeping yours hidden. If you're tense you can be controlled easier than when you loosen up, if your opponent is going somewhere there is no reason for you to follow.

Actually, it probably kind of was, considering that, as far as I can tell, other options would be to just sit and blockade Japan (thus, starving Japan's population and allowing Japan forces in China to continue murdering prisoners and locals), or invade (which would most likely cause even worse casualties for both sides). Also, neither of those options would stop the regular bombing, which is no better in terms of how many people die than using nuclear bombs. I do think that dropping the nuclear bombs away from settlements could also work, probably.
