Since I moved out to the forest to begin my new life as a woods hobo, I've been doing all of my cooking in a rather spartan travel-trailer kitchen. I've made a number of improvements to it at this point (for example, I ripped out the dinette and made it into more kitchen: • Travel Trailer Kitchen... ), but lately I've become dissatisfied with my knife storage situation.
I have three favorite knives that I use for almost everything, and it just so happens that whoever designed the upper cabinets for this trailer decided that rather than having full-width doors so you can actually reach everything, it would be better to have little panels of carpet. Yeah, I have no idea either.
Well, it just so happens that there are three such little patches of wasted space directly above my home-made kitchen counters, and they're each perfectly sized for a single knife.
So this video is nothing more than me making three little blocks of wood with magnets in them so that I can take advantage of that space.
I do a little experimenting before deciding that two 3mm thick by 32mm diameter magnets will be strong enough if they're 1/8" from the surface of the block. Then it's a simple matter to bore six holes in a scrap of cedar and pretty it up with some round-overs, sand paper, and mineral oil.
All-in-all this was a very quick and easy project, but it definitely improved the utility of my crappy little kitchen, so it's a big win.
