Listen in as Hatch Duo co-founder and Principal Designer Jon Thai shares three things he wishes he would've known before becoming an industrial designer!
We all have our "could've/should've" moments throughout life. But now that Jon has more experience with owning multiple businesses, here are his main tips for aspiring industrial designers!
1️⃣ Be ready and willing to put in the work: whether it's brushing up on you sketching skills, research, or CAD, know that there's a ton of work you'll need to put in to stand out from other designers.
2️⃣ Owning a design firm has helped Jon and Mike leverage their skillsets but knowing about business and how design can play a significant impact will help you embark on your design journey!
3️⃣ You know how you're asked as a kid, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Jon believes that learning about more creative professions or being exposed to design at an early age can play a role in the future of industrial design!

I wish I was in school for engineering, bc then I’d graduate making a whole lot more than I will in ID. But I enjoy ID much more than I would enjoy engineering

Bruh I'm 14 and homeschooled. The other night I was doing extra math with my dad and I asked him what I should major in when I went to college. And I thought industrial Design sounds nice. And he said you should major in Industrial design. So that's what I I'm doin

Exciting that you're thinking about your career path this early! There are some math based skills in industrial design that intertwine with creative skills and approaches. If you like math, also check out mechanical engineering as well!

@@HatchDuo I have a brother whos going into mechanical engineering. I don't really love math I've just come to terms with myself that it's really useful. I'm more of a creative person.

Hello! I graduated with a Zoology degree and am considering doing Product Design as a second degree. Please can I ask how you knew this was the right profession for you? Also how did you build a portfolio for university?
@HatchDuo
@HatchDuo 8 месяцев назад
Hi Kimbo, thanks for your comment! A sentiment shared among many of our designers is that if you enjoy problem-solving, creating tangible solutions, and bringing an idea to life then this type of profession is one you should definitely consider. Our co-founder Jon who is featured in this video actually majored in Art. Despite that, there are still some skills that transfer well into Industrial Design, such as form, aesthetics, sketching, etc. If you're interested in learning more, we talk a bit more about our journey to creating Hatch Duo in our video "Introducing Hatch Duo". One other thing is that there are definitely some skills from your Zoology degree that are transferable to Product Design, the main one being UX/UI. Including that alongside any personal projects, sketches, concept iterations, and final designs would help build your portfolio. Hope this helps!

@@HatchDuo Wow! He had to do another 4 years?! Fully Or just generally speaking? Surely it was more like 2.5-3ish, yea? Caught my attention when he said that. I started with engineering and went graphic design/ art but didn’t ever think or really know about industrial design. Thinking about it these days; what I’d study if I went back to school.
@HatchDuo
@HatchDuo 2 года назад
@@lonerclub2469 Yep, generally speaking. Industrial design involves some new sets of principles, so although it was a tough pill to swallow, it's good experience to have studied both.
